Toe Jam, who is Aaron? blue skies
-
I guess I should explain: it will be an intentional cutaway on a 3 canopy system. I figure I need to practice as it has been over 240 jumps since my last reserve ride (I have 3 so far)
-
woohoo! I get to have a cutaway on load one this saturday at elsinore! oh yeah! blue skies, black death
-
in regards to the people flying up from elsinore, I wouldn't count on it. if the people you are referring to are being flown by Tim, such as RJ and Pete, they have been talking about changing their plans to go to some "boogie" in mexico.
-
does anyone here jump at skydive monterey? we have a load driving up on thursday and the weather looks problematic. the question is whether it will be jumpable this weekend?
-
yeah, clouds in the morning (marine layer) clearing by 11:00. I got 15 jumps at Elsinore wed. and thurs.. you should have had patience. blue skies, black death
-
negatives: a lot of velcro, more work to pack, cypres costs more positives: secure, fast reserve, comfortable I own 2 and may buy another.
-
so I went to the DZ on Wed.-Thurs., got 15 more jumps in. didn't get to jump the stilleto 135 but managed to borrow a stilleto 120. for those of you keeping track, that is 25 jumps in the past week. I actually have done more jumps than I have posts.
-
6100' exit, open high enough. pull low, it's higher than you think
-
hey shark, you don't have to be nice to your packer. you just have to pay me. and land in dirt if you have a new spectre. 3 different canopies with less than 10 jumps each this weekend. a lesson for all: buy used canopies if only to be nice to your packer. T1, those hop 'n' packs really are great aren't they? I did another one on sunday with a 30 second delay. the poor people looking out the plane thought I was going to die pulling so low. blue skies, black death
-
10 jumps is alot only if you do them all in one day. in a weekend it really isn't that many. I did 6 after showing up about 12:30 and then only 4 on sunday (I was busy packing) pull low, it's higher than you think
-
you know you are a skydiver when...rather than posting on this site on a weekend, you actually go skydiving. I got home and found over 300 new messages. shouldn't you guys be jumping instead? truth be told I only got 10 jumps in this weekend because I was too tired on saturday. but I did get over 50 pack jobs also. can anyone top that?
-
so what your saying is DZs ban people dying. or maybe read the question and answer the question.
-
it seems like more mals happen on borrowed/rented gear. I have 3 reserve rides on other peoples gear, none on my own with about 400 jumps total. one I packed, one someone else packed, and one was a test jump.

Someone answer my question dammit! at DZs that prohibit hook turns, how do THEY define it? I know we can argue all day for a definition, but how do the DZs define it? (I need to know because I have a stilleto 135 demo on the way :-o)
-
that is bullshit. we all say hook turns kill, but many who die are on fr. risers. so does that mean they are not hook turn deaths? you look at top canopy pilots (Luigi, JC, Jim Slaton, Sonic, Rickster etc.) and you have the balls to say none of them do hook turns? A 360 is definately a hook in my book, regardless of the controls to accomplish it. like I said, there is no standard definition of a hook turn. FAA have the only official definition I have seen yet, and it was something like any turn of over 60 while causing the canopy to pitch ?? off of the axis below ??? feet.
-
In my opinion, you can swoop from a hook turn but not hook from a swoop (that makes no sense). swooping is skimming inches off the ground. there is no standard definition of a hook turn. hence my original question. how can the DZ's ban something they can't define? they know it when they see it?
-
I believe the hybrid triathalon is all ZP. the hybrid refers to CRW setup. Am I wrong? and if you are looking at the tri, I'd check out the spectre instead. they have compairable performance and better openings. I have packed tri's for many people and have more complaints of hard openings on tri's than anything, including sabres.
-
I noticed some references to DZs that have banned hooked turns. If any of you jump at these DZs, do you know how they define hook turns? Does any high-speed landing fit their definition? Would a nice 90 to final be prohibited? What about a carving 180? pull low, it's higher than you think
-
in my opinion, the hardest level is whichever level you think will be the hardest. when I did my aff, I psyched myself out and what I thought would be the hardest level took my 5 times to pass. notice I did not tell you what level that was. I hope no one tells you what will be the hardest level, because then you might psych yourself out about it. relax and have fun
-
I personally wouldn't go to brown field only because they require a cypres. I have heard nice things about the place, but I feel mandatory cypres is infringing on my freedom (even though I have a cypres). elsinore and perris are about 60 miles from SD and both have nice facilities. pull low, it's higher than you think
-
the canopy school will help you with whatever you need/want help with. at elsinore, they can help you just try to get stand-up landings, or whatever you need. for me, I got 2 coached jumps and was focusing on swooping, because that is where my skill level is at. it is worth every penny they charge. pull low, it's higher than you think.
-
and then it is fun and games without depth perception

from what I have heard/read, the ECPA is geared towards canopy control and safety. I have not heard anything about a license to do hook turns. A license for hook turns makes no sense to me for 2 reasons. 1. most people who die doing hook turns are not the same people who routinely do hooks. they are the people trying to turn into the wind on after a bad spot, the ones who fixated on a target and will do low 360's trying to hit it, the one's who don't understand the dynamics of a hook turn and die doing their first or second hook. 2.the smart aproach to high-performance landings is gradual. you should start with straight-in fr. riser approaches, then a slight turn, and as you gain more experience, you add more turn. a license, if required, would be difficult to enforce. where would you define a hook turn? 180 on a sabre at 1:1? a 90 on a tri-cell loaded 2:1? either can kill in the wrong hands, but who would say a 90 is a hook turn? pull low, it's higher than you think

does anyone else miss fear? I mean the fear when the door opens, when you deploy, when you land. I don't have the fear anymore, just enjoyment of the sport. anyone else? pull low, it's higher than you think
