I have been sending them plenty of awesome shots. I don't know how they choose their cover but I agree with your thoughts about this month. It almost seems like they only publish the "big pics" from well-known names rather than give the rest of us a chance to make a name for ourselves. I have not had a chance to contact Canon yet but will try to do so on Monday. On another note, I have taped a quarter to the outside of my helmet so that if I notice this has occured again when I get down, I can take the battery out to reset it before my tandem lands "I don't know where it is that I'm going, but wherever it is there I'll be!" --quoted by me

Hmmm, let's see. I'm known to many as either Feisty or MamaBird. As for students at my dz: Tits McGee, Pinecone, Lucky. One of our jumpers landed in powerlines and now she's called Sparkles. That's my list. "I don't know where it is that I'm going, but wherever it is there I'll be!" --quoted by me

Yup, sounds like what I get. What did you do to get it to lock up on you? "I don't know where it is that I'm going, but wherever it is there I'll be!" --quoted by me

Nope, no codes have shown up as of yet, unless I have to go in to the menu somehow and check. Maybe I will call Canon and see what they suggest. "I don't know where it is that I'm going, but wherever it is there I'll be!" --quoted by me

The small screen stays lit and the only way to get it to turn off is to take the battery out. Keep in mind that the big LCD menu on the XT does not stay on like the XTi does while taking pics. That's not the issue. I can't do anything with it while it's frozen. Pressing the button half way does nothing. If I plug in the USB cable while it's frozen, an error screen pops up on the puter saying that "device is currently busy and this application cannot be run". As for the power saving mode, that wouldn't explain why it freezes up in freefall when it is active. And I ALWAYS take test shots in the plane...part of my routine to make sure things are all good "I don't know where it is that I'm going, but wherever it is there I'll be!" --quoted by me

I am using a canon EF-S 10-22mm and I had this problem with both this and the stock lens. I am shooting in aperture priority ranging from 6.3-8.0 pending on conditions. I can't find any common thread between the occurances. It usually freezes up in freefall, but this last time yesterday it happened before exit. I also use a tongue switch and never hold it down for rapid shot...I am pretty good about knowing when I take my pics and how closely together so that shouldn't be an issue. On another note, I have used the camera a lot and have taken God only knows how many pics. I have two Canon batteries that I switch between so I'm thinking maybe it's a bad cell in one of the batteries?? Has anybody else had this problem with their rebel xt? It has happened to me a couple times in the last few months, and happened twice today... It completely froze up on me. First time today it was on the forth jump of the day, second time was on the sixth jump. Every time it happens I have to take the battery out to get it to unlock. It doesn't matter what you do (turn it off, take the card out, etc), the display is frozen and you can't do crap. It does't react to any buttons being pushed or anything. I can't find any kind of commonality with the occurances. Sometimes it happens in the middle of freefall, sometimes it happens on exit, sometimes on the ground. Battery level is full. Memory card has plenty of room. Any ideas? "I don't know where it is that I'm going, but wherever it is there I'll be!" --quoted by me

Fear not little grasshopper...there were several people already gone who have no idea. It will be a lost memory by next year for most anyway I do have a couple of good pics of your lady Pam if you would like to have them...let me know. -Feisty "I don't know where it is that I'm going, but wherever it is there I'll be!" --quoted by me

Congratulations Grannyinthesky, 100 Jump Wonder!

Hooray for Granny! Hooray at last! Hooray for Granny she's a horse's ass! HER! HER! FUCK HER! Glad to hear you finally got it. Congrats! "I don't know where it is that I'm going, but wherever it is there I'll be!" --quoted by me -
I just had my first one yesterday. Just over 10 years in the sport, jump #1842. Not bad odds since I've been jumping a small Xbrace (81) for the last 300+ jumps while flying full camera. It will happen, just a matter of when. "I don't know where it is that I'm going, but wherever it is there I'll be!" --quoted by me

Yeah, it was a relief when we realized we would be able to try to make it. Sorry we missed you at Mooses though...would have been nice for one last hug. I got lots of pics from the bar, tower and whatnot if you would like a copy. "I don't know where it is that I'm going, but wherever it is there I'll be!" --quoted by me

Yes, a good time was had by all...even by those who showed up a little later than usual And I must admit it was rather nice not taking my rig and having a "real" vacation at the Prairie for a change. Shell-don't forget that you owe me a toque as well... "I don't know where it is that I'm going, but wherever it is there I'll be!" --quoted by me

How long were you in this sport before a friend died?
BirdWoman replied to iluvtofly's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Just under 5 years for me. Then I lost my DZO/best friend. After that it was down hill and I lost 8 more over the next 18months. Tack on another two within the last year and a couple months. So yes, it will happen, especially with the more dropzones and boogies you go to. "I don't know where it is that I'm going, but wherever it is there I'll be!" --quoted by me -
QuoteIt's off to Calgary thursday AM to have lunch with Dez before he leaves for LP and then on to Eden North. Did I read that right Grim?? Did you say that DEZ is going to be there again? Fuck'n A! I guess if Dez is finally going to be there, I should at least make an attempt! "I don't know where it is that I'm going, but wherever it is there I'll be!" --quoted by me

I log each and every one of my jumps, and I primarily shoot video and am just under #1800. I do it for a couple of reasons. 1-my parents like to keep their side of the family updated with how many jumps I am up to and how many hours of freefall (they are all whuffos and are fascinated by the fact that I do it for a living) 2-so I can keep track of how many videos I have done for each aspect (tandem, aff, etc). It's nice to be able to know how many jumps in the last XXX were for fun (or vice versa) 3-I have two rigs that I try to use equally. It is nice to keep track of how many jumps are on each of the main linesets so I can replace them accordingly. 4-when students ask me how many jumps I have I like to be able to give them an accurate number, rather than make something up that sounds good to make myself look better. Something similar happened to a friend of mine this weekend, but the sandwich had been in the fridge for...well, we really don't know how long. Plus he was kinda drunk. I do remember that there was a PB recall sometime in the last year or so. How old is your peanut butter? Or, did you switch brands or anything like that? I'll give in. This was me swooping our pond at Skydive Houston yesterday evening. I didn't realize until after I had landed that I was touching water as the otter was landing. Enjoy! Stacey P.S. I'll give in. The first two are of a memorial tandem I shot on Saturday for a lost jumper...the jumper's wife was the student. The second shot is a cool pic of a headdown. Sorry I haven't had time to do anything other than resize for posting and tag them "I don't know where it is that I'm going, but wherever it is there I'll be!" --quoted by me

So after much research and advice (thanks DSE!), I finally got my 10-22 last week and got to jump it this weekend. I mainly shoot tandems 'cuz I don't get much of a chance to fun jump; I was amazed at how clear the pics came out and how creative I can get with different angles without "loosing the shot". I did get a chance to do some freeflying today which allowed me to put it all the way out to 10mm for a close headdown. Amazing! Hardly any distortion on the edges and where there is some, it actually adds to the shot. I got to shoot some pics of landings as well and it was able to get the whole canopy as the pilot swooped right at/over me. All in all, if you are thinking of a new lens because the stock lens just isn't cutting it, I highly suggest the 10-22. You can set it at 18-22 for tandems/aff if you want, or zoom it all the way out for close in stuff. Spend the money...it's worth every penny! purchasing still lens...beware when buying
BirdWoman replied to BirdWoman's topic in Photography and Video
CanonUSA retail is now $899. I got mine from B&H for $710 plus $83 for the 3year service agreement and $20 for 2nd day air shipping. It's well worth every penny. "I don't know where it is that I'm going, but wherever it is there I'll be!" --quoted by me -
I can tell you how many I have not stood up in the last 400 jumps or so, and that I could count on one hand. Those were ones that I chose to slide in due to an injured knee. I don't know if I would agree with the statement of "So you haven't learned anything?" The matter of fact is that if you know how to fly your parachute well, there is no reason why you can't maximize your power (especially on a high performance landing) to not have to run it out. It's simply a matter of knowing how long to stay in your swoop and when/how to transition to your toggles to finnish your flare. "So your haven't learned anything by not falling on your face?" Yes I have. I have learned how to fly my wing in all wind conditions so I don't have to fall on my face or run like Road Runner. Hang in there...you'll get it figured out. Hmmm, weight classes. Now we're getting somewhere. I didn't mean to suggest that we split into our own division because I for one like showing up the guys. Yes, the physics of body size does come into play; we all know that there becomes a point where small wings start to become inefficient and, even though it would have a higher wing loading, you kill your swoop due to lack of lift. Perhaps having different weight classes would help eliminate some of this problem and indeed excite more women into swooping. This could be a good thing! "I don't know where it is that I'm going, but wherever it is there I'll be!" --quoted by me
-
I agree to a certain extent. Given that most of us are smaller, it is very difficult to achieve the same wingloading as the guys. For example, I am jumping an 81 x-brace and am loading at 1.74 with my full camera gear. I can strap on 16lbs and still only have a loading of 1.87. For me to fly a canopy with a loading of 2.0, it would have to be either a 69 or 22lbs of lead. Yikes! "I don't know where it is that I'm going, but wherever it is there I'll be!" --quoted by me
