HAVE YOU EVER GONE LOW INTENTIONALLY?

Aren't BASE rigs designed to open with SUB terminal speeds? Didn't you get oner hell of a hard opening then with a base rig at terminal velocity? ------- SIGNATURE BELOW ------- Complete newbie at skydiving, so be critical about what I say!! Well, if you move HP canopies away that means moving slower closer. And with the slower ones are also the students. And student don't do well with buildings in theire way. Sounds logical? Hope so, cause it does to me ------- SIGNATURE BELOW ------- Complete newbie at skydiving, so be critical about what I say!! Lost one contact lens while in a stand...
poohbeer replied to kitof1976's topic in Safety and Training
I have ALWAYS a complete package in my car and I used (crashed it) to ALWAYS have a package in my motorcycle aswell. And since you don't ever see me without either one of those that pretty much covers anything. (both eyes need the same contacts so 1 package -6 contacts- should be enough for all events) ------- SIGNATURE BELOW ------- Complete newbie at skydiving, so be critical about what I say!! Using Neptunes with Night jumps.. please read if you have one.

Never been involved in testing electronics before, have ya'? You can test & test all day long in an environment, but you won't know what you're really looking for until a product makes it out to the field. Which is way you never release it to public first. Mmm, disagree, numorous errors have been surfacing after only a couple of not so very out of the ordinary jumps. No argument here, although if you put a device like this on the market which has several flaws in it, you better be quick about fixing them if it's already in use by experts and novices. Be honest, would you recommend this device right now to your friends? I wouldn't. In a few months or so you or I probably wouldn't doubt about it anymore. ------- SIGNATURE BELOW ------- Complete newbie at skydiving, so be critical about what I say!! I can't concentrate on anything else...

You might actually be better off that way. At least you can't stare longingly out the window and wish that you were falling through that beautiful blue sky... I just tell myself that my co-workers think I'm thinking about work. Hey stop complaining. I'm also a 9-5 IT'er and my view is directed to an airport with planes going up and down all day. And it aint even jumpplanes.. that would be cool.. spending lunches at the dropzone.. ghehe ------- SIGNATURE BELOW ------- Complete newbie at skydiving, so be critical about what I say!! from 1.5 to 1.16, in a couple of days. Mmm, how long was this product being tested BEFORE release to the public? 1.14 is outdated I have 1.16 :) ------- SIGNATURE BELOW ------- Complete newbie at skydiving, so be critical about what I say!! You may not need to, but someday you might have to...and a whole lot lower than that. I don't have a problem with it, but certainly don't think light of it. A whole lot lower I would certainly use silver. At 3500 non terminal I would just make sure not to loose alti awareness when trying to fix some minor annoyances like twists. ------- SIGNATURE BELOW ------- Complete newbie at skydiving, so be critical about what I say!! Well, I'm not totaly convinced but that's no problem... I don't need to do any 3500 hop'n'pops. Btw, if in an emergency at 2000 feet. What would you suggest the just off AFF student use, his main or reserve? ------- SIGNATURE BELOW ------- Complete newbie at skydiving, so be critical about what I say!! And how high would you suggest an AFF student has their harddeck before which they must decide to stick with main or go reserve? I've been told (http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=628899#628899) that for students and A licenseholders that harddeck must not be lower than 2500 feet. So if pulling at 3000 feet that 2500 feet is no more than a long snivel away isn't it? You with 1000 jumps have a comfortlevel to go below 2500 feet, but should AFF students do that also? Now I realise there is time to spend from 3500 but it's not that heck of alot for a novice skydiver in my (novice) opinion. ------- SIGNATURE BELOW ------- Complete newbie at skydiving, so be critical about what I say!! I would suggest sticking with your normal harddeck. If not under a canopy you can fly by then -> immidiate emergency procedures Do you really need to do a hop'npop from 3500 feet for completing your AFF?! Is this common practice in other countries than NZ? That's below my normal pull altitude by 500 feet which means I would go directly to pulling no matter if I'm stable or not. If you jump out at 3500f, then wait 5 secs to get stable and pull (like you say) and then you have a slow opening canopy that would break my harddeck (2500feet; since http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=628899#628899 untill I have had a reserveride) so emergency procedures would be in order. NO WAY am I gonna break that harddeck the first couple 1000 jumps. Lowering it I might do, but not right now with only 20 jumps. Thinking about buying a suit for myself but since I weigh at about 200lbs i won't need a fast one Those insidegrippers, are they used for RW or simply to create extra drag to slow one down? Whell that's the dive I was thought if diving towards the back of the plane in order to not to do a frontflip with the relative wind. On my earlier (up to level 4) however I had to dive 90° out of the plane. Not the best exit cause you can do a barrelroll quite easy but this way you can simply concentrate on leg position (arms you see so no real concentration needed) and arch from the momemt you exit. Untill level 4 means I had an instructor holding on (touching) to me with the exit so the barrel roll was not a problem. I had "swimming legs" (nice description!) the first few jumps. My sollution was to sit in the door concentrating solely on your position. Jump and BAM, immediatly concentrate on position again. Arms are easy, you see them, arch is also doable (as hard as you can) but legs you need to find out how far out. Why did this work for me (I think)? Because I didn't give my brain a chance to go into complete sensory overload. Concentrating on that arch kinde faded out the exit itself but made it much better. This being said, I'm no expert and just off AFF status myself. ------- SIGNATURE BELOW ------- Complete newbie at skydiving, so be critical about what I say!! Help: Comfortable goggles for contact wearers

Same here, no problems so far. And hopefully there won't be any problems either. I do NOT want to loose a contact lens at altitude. Has anybody of you that prefer analogue watches tested the neptune? How did you like it being digital instead of analogue? Did you need to think what altitude you were at or was it like an analogue where you only need to glance at it to know you're still way above pull altitude? Does that funmeter bar do it's job in providing this? Can that funmeter bar be set to deplete at another altitude? (I'm still pulling way above 3000f.) The used display seems like a graphical one so perhaps alti-2 could program it to display an analogue meter as an option? Or would the display be too small to use it in such a way? And why would you want to use an IR interface to communicate with a pc? Wouldn't serial or even more mini-USB (same protocol but not such a big connector as on your pc) or even 4-pin firewire be more suitable since almost all pc's have these connectors? There probably is a good reason for but just in case you folks at alti-2 haven't thought of this yet. I suppose flashing the display and/or backlight when a specific alarm goes off wouldn't be noticable enough to draw the jumpers attention? What will that software be costing? Any estimates? Free software or comparable to jumptrack? The manual says if the neptune detects freefall, it will go into freefall mode. According to Luna it does not do this when in menu mode?? Why not simply (when in backlight mode) have the light on also when in aircraft mode? I always like to know what hight I'm at since I start preparing at a set height. This way you also know the backlight isn't mallfunctioning before you exit the plane. Time to altitude should be useradjustable I think, I know with my very limited experience already of 1 dropzone that never takes you up to 13.000 feet. ------- SIGNATURE BELOW ------- Complete newbie at skydiving, so be critical about what I say!! I did understand your explanatyion aggie, but as Brent said, that's on a no-wind day. The smaller (higher loaded) goes faster, you say so yourself. This means it still goes forward relative to the ground with winds of (example) 20mph. While if you need to pop that bigass reserve, that would go 5mph backwards. Is this thé (or one of the) reason(s) why everybody uses almost the same size reserve as their main is? I suppose it is, since it's the only reason I see for not carrying a big reserve (other then how it looks and what the container can handle) ------- SIGNATURE BELOW ------- Complete newbie at skydiving, so be critical about what I say!! "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."
-
Mm, so even if I take a 280f² parachute I will travel (horizontaly) just as fast as someone with a 97f²? Why is it then that students may not go up with higher winds? Should make the landing easier up to the point both the student AND the experts start going backwards no? Or is that the point where you guys come in crosswind witch is unsafe for students? (sorry to be hyjacking the topic with my stupid questions, this is the last one though) ------- SIGNATURE BELOW ------- Complete newbie at skydiving, so be critical about what I say!! I'm slowly finding info and thinking about stuff for when I eventually will buy my own rig. I was planning on buying the biggest reserve possible as to get me down as safe as possible if I ever was to be knocked unconcious or anything like that but I also thought about not being able to jump in high wind conditions my main could do but my reserve not since it would rather qucikly fly backwards) Have you thought of this with your 149f² main + 218f² reserve? Or is the max. windspeed almost the same for 149f² and 218f² chutes? Or is this for you 'oldtimers' not a problem for some reason I do not yet comprehend? ------- SIGNATURE BELOW ------- Complete newbie at skydiving, so be critical about what I say!! I'm certainly no expert (AT ALL).. but in my opinion flaring is like thé most basic thing you must do on every chute. If you can't do that 100% perfect all the time don't you think that chute when used for a something other then a straight in - perfect conditions- landing is too much for you? What if you ever get a downwind landing with that 135f², or you need to turn away a bit on final approach because of that 5 year old running onto the dropzone.. wouldn't you be glad if you'd stayed with a 150 or even bigger? Bigger chutes like 150f² and such are also going to be easier and more forgiving to learn stuff on like high performance landings but certainly can do all those things. You sound like me when I bought my Suzuki GSX-R600 a few years back. Some knowledgable guys told me that I could handle it, some others told me it was dangerous. And hell, I could do some decent riding with it but when I met that car that forced me to use that bike to it's potential, I crashed. Was I able to ride that bike? Sure. Was it a good bike for me? Hell no! I think this situation is the same and you -just as I- will listen to the folks that say what you want to hear. Hopefully you don't 'crash' yours. ------- SIGNATURE BELOW ------- Complete newbie at skydiving, so be critical about what I say!! That must have been my topic: When to advise SL to an AFF student? Check the latest posts though.. AFF rocks! I indeed was pointing to sensory overload where I didn't seem to register the first portion of the dive. See it as extreme tunnelvision. Like the brain that locks up and thinks 'what the fuck' without registering external inputs. ------- SIGNATURE BELOW ------- Complete newbie at skydiving, so be critical about what I say!!
