does anyone NOT get nervous when they jump?
poohbeer replied to Newbie's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
ghehe, getting scared is nothing I look forward too.. You are however correct that the rewards are greater if you are scared.. hell that 4th jump (after the ride down) I screamed my lungs out in joy after my chute opened.. ghehe, I came, I saw and I conquered! ------- SIGNATURE BELOW ------- Complete newbie at skydiving, so be critical about what I say!! does anyone NOT get nervous when they jump?
poohbeer replied to Newbie's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I'm only 6 AFF jumps far while I rode attempt 4 down with the plane. Now due to budgetary problems I'm only starting with AFF again end august so I'm kinda fearfull that horrible 4th attemp will happen again.. scared shitless. Ok, I rode down so no danger but all 6 other jumps I was holding on for dear life while almost 'crawling' to the door just to hurl myself out after check-in+out trying not to think about it. Dirtdive all you want but that is NOT gonna help you (me) with the irrational fears on jumprun just before and while the door is open. The only way to conquer these fears (and only in due time) is do it and unfortunatly more then once. This is way I fear skybytchs post. I do NOT wanna have 30 jumps with that fear before I start enjoying exits Short: The only way to get over fears is to relive that fear time after time until you are used to it. If that's what it takes for me to become an ok skydiver, welll that's what i'll do then! ------- SIGNATURE BELOW ------- Complete newbie at skydiving, so be critical about what I say!! Is that at all possible? Doing tricks on exit? I though (assumed) that a TM needed to get stable belly to ground to release the drogue? GRMBL, otherwise I've been cheated out one more frontflip on mytandemjump ------- SIGNATURE BELOW ------- Complete newbie at skydiving, so be critical about what I say!! Think of sportsbikes as parachutes.. sure you can start with high powered (anything sport) ones. IF you can control yourself those bikes are sweet pussies.. but offcourse you want to have fun and drive a little so in about 2 weeks your accustomed to the bike so that your driving to fast al the time. And by god if you like a sportsbike for its looks and the atmosphere is creates you WILL ride it like that! But, If you're like me in love with plastic well, there iisn't any replacement for a gsxr-600 though gsxr, cbr, r1, r6, zx-6r, .. they are ALL to much for a beginner! A nice beginnersbikie would be a monster 600 or ER-5 or something like that. And even these bikes go way to fast and wil kill you faster then you can say "shit". I crashed my gsxr-600 within 2 months.. wasn't in fault and got insurance money but still.. another bike might have spared me this. Next bike I'm gonna by is a 400cc supersport . Probably an old FZR400 or so.. also fun to ride bit top at about 200kph instead of 260kph and are just that bit more forgiving. These are mainly for the Japanese market but there are some in europe (and most likely USA) ------- SIGNATURE BELOW ------- Complete newbie at skydiving, so be critical about what I say!! Euhhm.. why don't you simply cirkel around at a mile away until you are at 5000 feet then? ------- SIGNATURE BELOW ------- Complete newbie at skydiving, so be critical about what I say!! "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."

No fun at all.. sleeping without sleeping bag can be COLD! And yes, I've forgotten my sleepingbag on a trip once so it can happen!

newb with a twisted ankle and a question
poohbeer replied to ironeagle's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I'm a complete newbie but on the 5 days I was going for my AFF we were with about 40 people (30 SL, 10 AFF) and 'only' 1 person got injured. This because not following rules (landing downwind AND not flaring). The landings for me where WAY softer then with a tandemmaster strapped on my back. I even stood up most of them. ------- SIGNATURE BELOW ------- Complete newbie at skydiving, so be critical about what I say!! If it's that much harder to simply avoid someone with a faster canopy I see your point. But is that such a problem? From what (little) I've read here it's mostly people hitting the ground not other jumpers. ------- SIGNATURE BELOW ------- Complete newbie at skydiving, so be critical about what I say!! You say I don't have to take the lessons. Well, I want to make my own descision as to wether or not I fly something. I don't see the problem with people dieing as to their own stupidity. They choose for it, they had other options, they didn't take it and they sure as hell know wingloading will kill. Too bad. But that's life. Ass long as nobody else but themselves get hurt.. Money doesn't have to be a problem to not wanna spend it on something you know
-
No, cause if people don't do stupid and listen there's no need for that. Ok, I might get unlucky and break something, but it sure as hell is NOT gonna be because of wingloading! People that are not willing to take that risk can always go out and take lessons to test that. No need to obligate me to do the same. In the end, it's all your own responsibility!! ------- SIGNATURE BELOW ------- Complete newbie at skydiving, so be critical about what I say!! Euhm.. with no wind you get harder landings, no? Cause when you've got wind it slows your speed (relative to the ground) down, so less impact even. ------- SIGNATURE BELOW ------- Complete newbie at skydiving, so be critical about what I say!! In that article it sais "The Plaintiff, United States, admits that the parachute device used for BASE jumping is more subject to directional control than ordinary parachutes ". Is a BASE parachute more controlable than a normal parachute?! ------- SIGNATURE BELOW ------- Complete newbie at skydiving, so be critical about what I say!! Doesn't matter. FAR 105.7 doesn't leave a lot of leeway in this. If the skydiver is found to have been under the influence of alcohol, then it's a clear violation of FAR 105.7. Doesn't matter if the skydiver entered last on the Twin Otter and there was no way the pilot could have even seen the skydiver. Same sort of deal with any one of a number of FARs that hold the pilot responsible for things that he really has no way of checking such as your reserve being in date or everyone wearing seatbelts for taxi, takeoff and landing. Well, in those cases he is able to check it. It's not practicle or such but he is able to check it (get out his cockpit ask and look. With a bloodalcohol level that is just too high (.01) there is no way he can verify that. Well, he could get a doctors license and bloodtest everyone before they board his plane but thats rather ubnlickely So, will the pilot be held responsible for something he can not check in any logical way? Think not. Most likely those rules are there for stopping an obvious drunk from boarding, no? (no legal or skydiving expertise here so this is just a thought) ------- SIGNATURE BELOW ------- Complete newbie at skydiving, so be critical about what I say!! And adding again to the already pretty high costs to start and keep jumping. Once you have to follow classes so you cannot learn from your buddies the price goes up. And most often, WAY UP. I've just paid 1000+ euros for my AFF, unfortonalty I will have to have another go at this caus I'm not that good: another 1000 euros. Then offcourse gearrental and after that buying my own gear again thousands of euros I'll have to find somewhere. Now you want me to take some more classes also?! Adding again at least several hundred euro's or more? ------- SIGNATURE BELOW ------- Complete newbie at skydiving, so be critical about what I say!! I'm not at all experienced but aren't you risking you pull above someone else then? What if the lower guy is just about to wave off and pull? If you have ever rode the plane down...
poohbeer replied to gatorbait's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I freaked out when the door opened at 13500 feet on my level 3 (4th jump) AFF. Still not a clue why I freaked since I had 2 AFF jumps the day before and 1 before on that same day. But I rode down.. came to my sences and got up again. Thanks to all those freeflying video's I've seen: I so much wanna get good enough to do al those things myself and well, to get there, I realy need to jump ------- SIGNATURE BELOW ------- Complete newbie at skydiving, so be critical about what I say!! thread spinoff, riding the plane down for instructors?
poohbeer replied to andy2's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
In my case (I was the refusing student) .. I was up with both instructors (level 3; 4th 'jump') when panic striked just as the door opened. Still don't know what triggered it since I had 1 tandem (+- 1 month before) + 3 AFF (1 day before) jumps before that. Instructor 1 asked if I was sure cause "you are never gonna come up again", asked again, then had the (last) group after me jump and jumped with them while leaving the other JM with me for the ride down. I don't think there is time for realy persuading someone up there.. costs a lot to fly and when someone has said no I don't think he will be persuaded that same flight. He has made that choice for good reasons and is not gonna change his mind in that high stress environment. Offcourse, I did get up for 3 more jumps the next day before running out of tickets and money If only 1 instructor was with me I sure hope he would have stayed in the plane. This already is not a good moment for the student and hell yes he needs someone to talk good of/to him. Also, that pilot REALY dropped his plane down, ears hearted like hell so I'm not sure if my AAD wouldn't have popped if JM2 hadn't shut it off. And last but not least: who else would have shut the door at altitude?! You sure aren't gonna leave a student near an opened jump door are you?! ------- SIGNATURE BELOW ------- Complete newbie at skydiving, so be critical about what I say!! Intentional cutaway? Why cut away and have the risk of damaging your main when it lands in a tree or something? Can't you just go directly for silver if you wanna fly your spare once? Or will/can this entangle with your still in the bag main then or something? ------- SIGNATURE BELOW ------- Complete newbie at skydiving, so be critical about what I say!! Mmm, I'm certainly no expert at the matter (read grey sig below) but PLF'ing (feet 45°, roll in the direction you're traveling) is the best method for even a 300 pounder - if done correctly. It is designed NOT to strain any part of your body in specific but to divide the speed over your entire body. I also don't see what's wrong with nike sneakers. Ok, they don't have the best ankle support but that isn't needed. Hell, soft movable sneakers will be a big plus if you start free falling since it's easier to feel the wind on your toes - I've been told by my instructors. If you landed with your feet at 45° angle to your direction + a continued PLF! after flaring from 10 feet high (and keeping it flared) with a big slow 280 feet² manta, I think you are just one very unlucky guy to not have walked away without injury. But please, listen to those instructors when you go up next time (offcourse you will, no sport is as much fun as skydiving and you haven't even experienced to most fun part: freefall) , they have been in the business for a long time so Ithink we may safely presume they know it A LOT better than we do. ------- SIGNATURE BELOW ------- Complete newbie at skydiving, so be critical about what I say!! I just did my AFF. There were about 10 guys that all finished it in 3 days. I was AWFULL at it and could have finished it in 4 or 5 days of my money had lasted. I've learned and am taking a week off for AFF + 25 weeks for solojumps. All this only in august. I'm also going abroad to France (from Belgium) because my instructors will be there during summer months. If you go abroad be VERY sure they speak the same native tongue as you. Even if you know the other language "ok", I wouldn't do it. ------- SIGNATURE BELOW ------- Complete newbie at skydiving, so be critical about what I say!!
