From USPA Web Site: http://www.uspa.org/news/index.htm All Vigil AADs to Be Replaced (04/07/04) A service bulletin issued March 31 by Advanced Aerospace Designs in Brussels calls for the mandatory replacement of all Vigil automatic activation devices marketed by the company. Kim Griffin, Sales Manager for Vigil USA in DeLand, Florida, announced that her company expects the first replacement units April 19 and should receive more at a rate of 25 per week. Current Vigil units are not grounded, but owners in dry packing environments are advised to take precautions to prevent the AAD from firing on the ground as a result of static electricity. View the service bulletin [here http://www.uspa.org/news/notices/VigilServiceBulletin.pdf]. Jo Smolders, Advanced Aerospace Designs marketing manager, explains the history of the development and testing of the Vigil and the events leading to the service bulletin. http://www.dropzone.com/safety/articles/Exits.shtml For the whole team: The key to all good exits is Timing, Presentation and Placement! As you stand in the door, lined up and ready to exit, realize this: you are a funnel waiting to happen. In the line up, your team is like a ball of bodies. You may have the correct grips of a formation, but a formation you are not. From the door, you must physically PUT THE FORMATION ON THE AIR. You cannot just jump out and see where it goes. You must decide exactly where you want the formation to be on “the hill” and physically put it in that place. Decide exactly where you want the formation to be on “the hill”; Stand balanced and comfortable in the door during the line up; Have a consistent and easily communicated count to establish ideal timing; Know what you personally have to do to ensure that you are presented to the wind as you leave the door. Don’t jump out and then present. You must be presented when you first hit the air; Establish your cross-reference while in the line up. Front and rear should be watching each other as they come off the plane. This is the only way to know if you have immediately put the formation in the proper place on “the hill” and the only way to fix it if you have not. ... Though some teams have the count coming from inside, the center float is the most central person. ... ... For everyone, as you present to the relative wind placing yourself on “the hill”, use your grips to help present the entire formation. If you have a grip, you must be aware of exactly what the person whose grip you have needs from you. Otherwise, you will restrict them from doing their job on the launch. Expand from the center point and take personal responsibility for putting the entire formation on the air. ... Just for the IC: The inside diver (most commonly the rear center) must stay very close to the plane during the exit. The most common error is for them to launch out too hard and too far. In doing so, they run over the center float and collapse onto them. It is very important for them to see the motion of the exit and leave exactly with the center while only occupying the space right outside the door. More on Timing, Presentation and Placement here: http://www.dropzone.com/safety/articles/BasicExitTechniques.shtml Another good article about Understanding your Slot here: http://www.dropzone.com/safety/articles/UnderstandingYourSlot.shtml Blue Skies! ----------------------------- Mario Santos Portugal

Hi, I'm not a BASE jumper and I don't intend to be one, but I read the posts at "The BASE Zone" on a regular basis. In my opinion I would like "The BASE Zone" to remain at Dropzone.com forums... the name tells it all: "The BASE Zone"... so I don't see any problem of confusion with "Skydiving"... After all, you guys (BASE jumpers) use a parachute, don't you? The big difference is that skydivers use aircrafts (planes, helicopters, balloons, etc.) to jump from and those are not fixed (static) objects... they are moving (even balloons are not completely static)... on the other hand, BASE jumpers jump from fixed objects (B.A.S.E.)... but they jump and they use a parachute... at least for now . Keeping this Zone is also a way to educate and to avoid misunderstandings regarding BASE jumping, of course respecting always the common sense rules that you guys have regarding things as simple as not to mention places, showing photographs that would allow to identify a place, or so. You guys are a community... you have a number to identify your achievement: BASE XXX... anyone with common sense knows that and there's nothing to be done against... actually, that's not the issue here. By removing this Zone here, the problem you refer to won't get solved by itself... actually I think it could even get worse, as that "gray" zone between skydiving and BASE would persist and the misunderstandings would probably get bigger... after all, regardless this BASE Zone at the dropzone.com forum continues or not, you can always have your restricted groups where you allow only those you wish. So far, I have found this BASE Zone educational, have learnt a lot more about BASE and BASE jumpers, and I see no reason to remove it from dropzone.com at least until you BASE jump with a parachute. Even if all the BASE jumpers would agree to remove this BASE Zone here, would you be able to forbidden someone else to talk about BASE? Probably not. I by keeping it here, you áre able to remain in control of the talk and discussion. It's better to be an insider and remain in charge... For example, if you ask me if it would be adequate to have a BUNGEE jumping forum here, I would say "NO"... they jump, and from fixed objects, but they don't use a parachute... and I'm not calling them BASE jumpers... or skydivers either. I think the final outcome of having this BASE Zone here is far better than the final outcome without it... this is not BLiNC and everybody reading here (at least those more regular on that) knows it. For example, CReW is here at dropzone.com forums and the problem never came up... they skydive out from the airplane, but when they come through the door most of them come already with their PC in their hands to through out... it's a different type of skydiving... their skydives have very little freefall (most of the times)... the same as for Accuracy... there are many events regarding Parachuting that don't have too much skydive... on the other hand their purpose is more headed towards the canopy control work rather than the body control while freefalling... For example paraglider pilots are not skydivers... or parachutists... or BASE jumpers... because they don't jump... they leave from their exit points with their paragliders already inflated and ready to start flying as soon as they "take-off"... the canopies they use are not parachutes in the strictus sensus of the word... a parachute is a canopy to stop your freefall, even when that freefall is one second... even with static line you have a parachute deployment and you achieve a certain rate (speed) of freefall (a small one, but still one...)... while paragliders are not made to stop a fall but rather they are done specifically to glide and remain flying, sometimes for hours, something that is not achievable with parachutes. I would say that this dropzone.com are "wider" related wuth "Parachuting" rather than just "Skydiving" itself. By removing this BASE Zone, I think that both the BASE community and dropzone.com will get poor, because it would be lost an opportunity to "educate"... after all, most of us come to these forums to learn... not to through stones to each other... and when this last happens, there is a moderator, who is in charge to keep things of track according to the goals that have led to its creation. It's just my opinion and sorry for posting here as I'm not a BASE jumper. Take care out there and... Blue Skies! ----------------------------- Mario Santos Portugal

Hi, Here's another update, this one on the Formation Skydiving IPC Rules 2004, effective from May 01, 2004: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=911480;search_string=mjasantos;#911480 Blue Skies! ----------------------------- Mario Santos Portugal -
Hi all, Following last 55th IPC Plenary Meeting recently held at Lisbon (Portugal), the complete set of Formation Skydiving Rules IPC 2004 as well as the Summary of Changes, are already available from FAI Web Site: Complete set of Formation Skydiving Rules IPC 2004 (http://www.fai.org/parachuting/documents/fs4-8_2004.pdf) Summary of Changes (http://www.fai.org/parachuting/documents/FS_changes_2004.pdf) Overview of the most significant recent updates, regarding Formation Skydiving: Rule Section 4.4 Competitors are not allowed to use a wind tunnel (freefall simulator) after the draw has been made. Rule Section 4.8.3 If an infringement in the scoring formation of a block sequence is carried into the inter (ref.2.8), this will be considered as one infringement only, and only one point will be deducted, provided that the intent of the inter requirements for the next formation is demonstrated and no other infringement occurs in the inter. Rule Section 5.4 The Judges will watch the video evidence of each jump to a maximum of three times at normal speed. If, after the viewings are completed, and within fifteen seconds of the knowledge of the result, the Chief Judge, Event Judge or any Judge on the panel considers that an absoloutly incorrect assessment has occurred, the Chief Judge or Event Judge will direct that only that part(s) of the jump in question be reviewed. If the review results in a unanimous decision by the Judges on the part(s) of the performance in question, the score for the jump will be adjusted accordingly. Rule Section 5.7 If Judges cannot determine the start of the working time, the following procedure will be followed. Working time will start as the videographer separates from the aircraft and a penalty equal to 20% (rounded down) of the score for that jump will be deducted from the score for that jump. Rule Section 6.3.6.4 Videographers must be entered for each team as part of the delegation. The evaluation process for the video evidence will be the same for any Videographer. Videographers may be one of the following: A) One of the team in which case they may only jump as a Videographer and they will be eligible to receive awards and medals, or B) Other Videographers, regardless of gender, from any delegation. These Videographers are not eligible for awards and medals. In this case there may be no more than five (5) competitors in a 4-Way team and no more than nine (9) competitors in an 8-Way team. These Videographers may jump only as a Videographer and are subject to the same regulations as other competitors on the team. Option B is valid for 2004 and 2005 only. The Videographer may be replaced, (with the agreement of the Meet Director) in which case the replacement Videographer will not be eligible for medals. I don't know Brasília myself, but through some pictures and maps available at the web, I can guess there are a lot of open spaces in the town. The web site for the event is this one http://www.wpc2004.com.br/ but is still being developed. This is a good web site to know more about Brasília - http://www.geocities.com/TheTropics/3416/ I'm sure they will soon release more details about the new location. Hi all! The 55th IPC Meeting, was held at Lisbon (Portugal) from Jan 28 through Feb 01, 2004. Until we get the official conclusions of the 55th IPC Meeting published at the FAI Web Site, here is some of the information I was able to get from the Portuguese Delegate who attended the Meeting. Sorry for not being too much precise or detailed, but this was the best I could get... ====================================================================== Formation Skydiving Mostly remains unchanged. However clarifications on some rules have been made. At the moment I don't have the details on which clarifications were done. Accuracy Landing Minor changes. Canopy Relative Work A new competition set of rules has been created (improvement of previous ones). Also, a new competition format for CRW has been anticipated: 2-Way CRW (no more details available at the moment). Artistic Events and Canopy Piloting Regulations on these events will continue to be improved. Sportif Code FAI has changed some parts of Section 5; these changes will soon be released at the FAI Official Web Site. Competitions Calendar There are not too many changes or news... Sep 13-19, 2004 -- 2004 World Parachuting Championship in Artistic Events (Brasília - Brazil; initially it was scheduled to Campinas but location has been changed) Sep 18-24, 2004 28th World Parachuting Championship in Freefall Style and Accuracy Landing (Rijeka - Croatia) 3rd World Parachuting Championship in Formation Skydiving Female Category (Rijeka - Croatia) 16th World Parachuting Championship in Formation Skydiving (Rijeka - Croatia) 28th World Parachuting Championship in Freefall Style and Accuracy Landing (Rijeka - Croatia). 2004 World Cup in Canopy Piloting - still in open (date and location) until March 2004. 2005 All the FAI World Competition Events to be held at Eloy (USA). Oct 21-29, 2005 12th World Cup in Style and Accuracy Landing 2005 World Cup in Formation Skydiving 2005 World Cup in Canopy Piloting 2005 World Cup of Artistic Events 2005 World Games to be held in Germany (organized every 4 years by the International Olympic Committee for the non-olympic sports), and will include Accuracy Landing, Freestyle, 4-Way Formation Skydiving and Canopy Piloting. These Games are just for selected athletes and the 4-Way FS event will have specific rules (not many details availbale yet). These Games are not the World Air Games (WAG), as those are organized under the supervision of FAI, and according to the most recent FAI newsletter have just been canceled for the year of 2005... there were only 2 countries candidates to the organizing (Poland and Indonesia). 2006 FAI World Formation Skydiving and Artistic Events to be held at Gera - Germany. Aug 05-11, 2006 6th World Parachuting Championship in Freestyle Skydiving & Skysurfing 17th World Parachuting Championship in Formation Skydiving 4th World Parachuting Championship in Freeflying IPC/FAI Staff There were no changes in the composition of the IPC/FAI Staff. ====================================================================== That's all I can say for now. Hi! Yes, there was a Block 18: Interlock - Venezulan Connection. I've attached a pic of it. Are you talking about this one? Not that I'm that old... Blue Skies! ----------------------------- Mario Santos Portugal

Hi Steve, Without going too much into the technical details of this non-repeater block (or any other non-repeater block), the problem here is that we have a block where a slots switch will occur... there's no way that can be avoided! I'm not completely aware about the statistics for whose piece (front or rear) has usually the memory in Block 10... actually my first impression, now that you've talked about it, was that the front piece usually has the memory most (slots switch)... for example, in my previous team (Matrix FS) we had the front piece (myself OC and the Point) to perform the slots switch. Mostly, going for one or another, I think that is an option the team takes, based on their individual and team performance... or the way they think the team will get maximum output not only for a particular non-repeater block but for the complete the dive pool (a kind of "cost of opportunity" concept). Many teams, for some reasons (technical skills and "easiness" versus trouble of one or more team members on memorizing) put all the memory in the front piece, some others in the rear piece, and the remaining have a "shared" solution, which is, the front piece will have the memory for some of the non-repeaters and the rear piece will have the memory for the remaining non-repeater blocks. Besides the technical details involved with each of the slots switch blocks, that could lead to any of the 3 mentioned options above (front, back and shared memory), I think that is mostly a consequence of the team's strategy, later materialized on each team's continuity plan... and as the team improves as a team, that continuity plan might change: a continuity plan should be dynamic (look at Majik in one of the interviews they granted to NSL where they mentioned that... that they were going to introduce some changes in their continuity plan, related with the pieces having the memory). I remember that Majik, a world-class top team, not long ago had one of the pieces with the memory for all the blocks... for example Arizona Airspeed and later Airspeed Vertical had a shared solution. It's all upon the team's continuity plan, the plan that materializes the team's choices to face all the possible dive's engineering coming out of a draw. Hi there! The 7,200 ft are correct! That is a Mass Jump, not a Big-Way Freefall Formation. Here's the complete explanation: ===================================== Largest Mass Freefall Jump Sanam Luang Royal Ceremonial Grounds, Bangkok 24 January 2004 The first world record targeted for the Royal Sky Celebration will be for the category of 'Largest Mass Freefall Jump.' World Team '04 will attempt to eclipse the current mass freefall record of 572 skydivers set in Bangkok, Thailand, on 2 December 1999, and the current record of 588 (which included one aircraft load of static line jumpers) set in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on 18 April 2000. On Friday, 23 January, a briefing will be held at 10:00 am the Windsor Suites Hotel for the World Team members who will participant in the Mass Freefall Jump the next day. Following the briefing, jumpers will have an opportunity to visit the Sanam Luang drop zone, and are encouraged to take the time to do so. On Saturday, 24 January, World Team members participating in the Mass Freefall Jump will board buses early in the morning (probably 07:00), which will take them to the RTAF Base in Bangkok. Support personnel and accompanying persons will be bused directly to the Sanam Luang drop zone. At approximately 11:00, the Royal Thai Air Force will fly a formation of six Hercules C-130's over downtown Bangkok at 2,200 meters / 7,200 feet. After these aircraft pass near the Grand Palace, World Team's international contingent of 430+ skydivers and 240+ elite Thai skydivers will exit from the tailgate ramps to set a Guinness Book Mass Freefall Jump World Record with a total of 672 skydivers.. After opening their parachutes, skydivers will unfurl long yellow and blue streamers, which will trail behind them as they fly toward the Sanam Luang Royal Ceremonial Grounds to land. The colored streamers are symbols of the Royal colors of Thailand: yellow is the color of the Royal Standard, and blue is the background color of Her Majesty the Queen's personal flag. This Royal Sky Celebration Mass Freefall Jump will signal the beginning of an eight-month-long Celebration honoring Her Majesty the Queen, whose birthday is August 12. The number "672" was selected for its symbolic significance to honor Her Majesty's 6th (12-year) life cycle 72nd birthday. http://www.theworldteam.com/PPsanam.htm ===================================== Blue Skies! ----------------------------- Mario Santos Portugal

Hi! I'm from Portugal and I have already been at 3 of those (Eloy, AZ)! It's the best way to learn the basics (and from there going to an advanced perspective) of Formation Skydiving! Those guys are simply great, efficient and smooth. They'll let you know what exactly you'll need to improve, focusing on one or 2 aspects at a time and never forgeting and practising what you do best. It's one of the best tools for those wishing to learn! Definitely worths the money and certainly you won't regret. There are no words to explain how you will feel at the end of one of those Skills Camps: if you attend one, you'll understand what I'm talking about! It's an experience that you won't ever forget in your life! But be careful: you may become addicted! Blue Skies! ----------------------------- Mario Santos Portugal

Are you talking about the FS4 Motion Coach 2002 program? This one, actually is not an Omniskore production... it is a Yola van der Wal (FS4MotionCoach@cs.com) production and it has as well the last IPC Dive Pool update. This is a cool program, working in Flash Player, including all the current Randoms and Blocks, where you'll be able to play, rewind, step forward or back, loop playing, the formations, selecting their respective mirror images, having red flags information for each, for each step move... definitely an excelent tool for 4-Way Formation Skydivers. I think you can get the program as well through NSL website (http://www.skyleague.com/, where they have a link to a FS4 Motion Coach free Trial Version. The link is http://www.skyleague.com/FS4MOT~2.EXE. For any doubts you may contact NSL@Skyleague.com. Blue Skies! ----------------------------- Mario Santos Portugal
