Nervous Husband - Wife jumping, please read
skytash replied to Gretsch's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I suspect one of the things that makes skydiving very concerning to outsiders is the level of hazard. If I compare my week-ends with those of say rugby players, the chances of me showing up a work with an injury are far lower (ie it has lower risk) however if I was to have an injury, I probably wouldn't be at work at all unlike the rugby player with the bruised up face. It's true, you can get hurt and die doing either of these sports, however most people only focus on the fact that the hazard is high and forget the number of Monday mornings skydivers all over the world walk back into the office with no damage to themselves (apart from you professional skygods of course) tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. In the UK there is no life assurance available to the general public that includes death in the event of a skydiving accident. Working for one of the life assurance providers in the UK I asked one the actuaries about it. Unfortunately part of the reason premiums are either not priced (as in the UK) or really high is that there aren't enough of us around to give a high enough population amongst whom to spread the risk. Axa found this out to their detriment with their travel insurance. It ended up being the provider of choice amongst skydivers and the proportion of people taking it out and paying premiums vs the value of claims was such that it became too expensive to carry on and now it doesn't exist anymore. Wish we had some actuaries who weren't profit motivated tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Being alive is a special occasion. Avril Sloe

was wondering when the family pic would come. Have seen more precariously balanced families with babies and toddlers weaving their way around traffic in Bombay! just didn't ever take a pic tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Being alive is a special occasion. Avril Sloe

It means that it has the pocket in the reserve tray and any necessary routing around it for Cypres to be added, ie a rigger just needs to fit it rather than make any changes to add it to the rig. tash edited to remove second s Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. I would describe myelf as BASE-curious and have been put off by a number of the "how to get into BASE" articles I've found so far. The chances of any of you seeing me close to an exit point was radically reduced by the information I was able to find on the internet. My current impression is that most people who do post things in public are suitably cautious about sites, explaining dangers and referring to lost friends on the List to make it clear to readers what they are letting themselves in for. I suspect the risk of people using inappropriate gear is not really influenced by the public information. People who would have jumped a Sabre off an object would have done so if the information wasn't around as much as they do now that information is around and they choose not to read and absorb it properly. tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Perris September 2006 100-ways formation design

On the 88-way, is that one person doing a solo in the middle with a tube? edited to say - should have looked at Lew's pics first, then I wouldn't have had to ask a stupid question tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Being alive is a special occasion. Avril Sloe -
The 'one-size-doesn't-fit-all' theory also makes sense to me, as the points at which different people can and do bend along the body-airfoil will vary with height and torso/leg proportion. Something I've found helps in getting lift is to also cup the air with my chest by rolling my shoulders what would be forward if I'm upright (but ends up being down while tracking). It would be difficult to add that to your picture, however can also help in terms of the overall angle of attack from between head and toe. tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. That sarcasm or do you actually know who this person is? Hot tip: this is a very small sport. If it appears in Skydiving magazine, chances are a lot of people know who the author is. Another Hot Tip, it's SKYDIVE Mag (UK) NOT SKYDIVING (USA) Yes, but Gareth lives in Berkeley, CA. and like you and me, he's a Brit-abroad! tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. If you are picking it up, just declare it as you come through customs. If they are sending it, it may have to be sent to a Customs office which will hold it until you pay the duty. tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Being alive is a special occasion. Avril Sloe

There have been a number of threads on doing AFF outside the UK and then coming back to jump there and problems some people have encountered as well as advice on how to prevent it. Rather than repeat it all here, do a search in this forum for AFF and UK and you should find them. Langar is fun and a good place to go, read some of the DZ reviews to see what people in general have thought of various DZs in the UK. Do as much research until you feel 110% comfortable with the DZ and the instructors, and welcome to the sport! tash Don't ever save anything for a special occasion. Being alive is a special occasion.
