  1. The US economy is an interesting thing - especially when you see how people describe it. Down right now? Absolutely. A few general remarks about the US economy against a nice political backdrop. Bush was elected in 2000. His first budget passed in Nov 2001 and went into effect in 2002. That means for 2001 it was a Clinton budget running the country. Also during 2001, we had our entire airline industry shot to hell by 9/11. Other ancillary industries also suffered - the insurance industry, anything associated with the travel industry (hotel, tourist, etc) etc. A few months later, our lovely unionized longshoremen went on strike (guess who they vote for as a general rule) and if you don't know what power they have over the US economy, I suggest you find out. Check out their salaries while your at it, since CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS didn't seem to state them very often. To summarize, Bush inherited an economy on the downturn (Dem's can lie about this as much as they want; lying over and over again doesn't change the facts). 9/11 slammed the economy HARD. Bush got his first budget and tax cut passed. The longshoremen's union slugged the economy a good one while it was already on shaky knees. Now we're in 2003 and many (myself included) think we're recovering. A few random thoughts on the economy. Anyone pontificating about the economy who doesn't include the status of the economy Bush inherited, 9/11, the Longshoremen's strike, and the general time-frame of when Bush's economic team really took over (after his budget/tax cut passed) hasn't got a lot of argumentative substance backing them up. (For those lefties out there, check and see if ANY of the democratic presidential hopefuls included any of the above in any of their discussions about the current economy....hehehehehehehe) General thoughts from a quasi-Libertarian on the current US economy.

  8. Haven't heard a lot of good things about Detroit dude....actually, I haven't heard ANYTHING good about Detroit from anyone I know - they all hate it. I'd stay in TX. It doesn't snow there like it does up North. You'd miss Lone Star beer and you know it.

  11. I think we're all that tough in our own minds. I wonder how many of us would actually do such a thing. That is one tough hombre and I admire him for it. Kudos to that dude. If he wasn't a skydiver he damn well should have been.
  12. Dammit! Why can't you live in NorCal? Teasing bastard! Now it's Monday morning and I'm already thirsting for the nectar of the gods we all know as beer. I blame you for this! Wishing I was doing a keg stand, Vinny the Anvil
  13. I'd agree with you most of the time dude. Engineers are exceptions however. Most of us techie types can't write worth a damn. I know a PhD that writes about as well as a high school freshman but can do quaternion/Rodriguez parameters/PDE's in his head and has produced some awesome control theory.
  14. Calling O'Reilly a racist based on his views of Hip Hop is one of the most baseless accusations of racism I've ever heard. I can formulate a much more plausible argument that Kweise Mfune is a racist than that. Ms. Yolanda Parks' statement is indicative of the 'victimology culture' nurtured by many on the left. She didn't touch on Mr. O'Reilly's argument - her focus was on the color of Mr. O'Reilly and those with whom he disagrees. There is no other substance to her statement, which can be boiled down to: Mr. O'Reilly disagrees with me. He's a racist. I watch O'Reilly quite often and have heard him slam folks on the left, the right, in the middle and everywhere else on the political spectrum. I've heard him slam Bush, Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, Jeb Bush, Cheney, and saw him make a fool of Robert Reich the other day. I even heard him slam Ozzy Ozzborne a couple of days ago as well. Say what you like about him, he doesn't pander to the left or the right with any predictability. I don't always agree with what he has to say, but I do believe that his opinions do spark thought by all on both sides, which is what a good talk show should do. If you have proof that he is a racist, by all means bring it forth. Hopefully your proof will be more substantive than that presented by the quote from Ms. Parks. Calling someone a racist is about the lowest insult in the book - or one of them - in my opinion. If you do so without proof, you are even lower. I've found that most people in recent history who have been called racists and hazards to civil rights have been victims of smear campaigns and have nothing but contempt for those who were involved (I consider most of them cowards). 15. Don't forget Hollister dude....close to Monterey if the weather is bad....I live in Monterey and it wasn't looking good the last time I was outside.
  16. Lurch, your posting is undoubtedly the most prejudiced I've read on this board. I am a Christian White Southerner and am so sick of the stereotypes you embrace it's not even funny. Furthermore, I 'm a Catholic Republican(quasi-libertarian) White Southerner which means I don't judge anyone by their race for any reason nor do I support any program which does. This article, by the way, really ticks me off, but not nearly so much as your bigotted posting. If you'd actually spent some time in the Southeastern US you would realize that the Flaggots (a term we use to refer to those who want the Stars and Bars on the GA State flag) and racists such as the ones in the article of contention are actually in the minority. Your remarks are indicative of a subtle prejudice against Southerners that runs throughout the nation and is utterly sickening. A prominent political activist recently stated "If you're a white male from the South you are probably a racist" and not one single politician from the northeast or elsewhere -that I know of - publicly condemned the SOB (it was none other than the president of the NAACP who said this, by the way). What a racially prejudiced bigot. Instead of blasting the South with your lies based on second hand reports and your own stereotypes, try going down there and spending some time. Go into Appalachia - where I'm from - and do some volunteer work. It might open your eyes to the fact that poverty, kindness, hatred, racism, and love know neither racial nor ethnic boundaries. As far as the Northeast having no tolerance for that mindset, I suggest you read the news on occasion. Jesse Jackson has spit in people's food because of their color and frequently receives rounds of applause up there. $harpton, Farrakhan, and other racists also count on the Northeast as a bastion of political support. The most prominent Senator from the Northeast - Ted 'The Bottle' Kennedy - would be lying if he stated that he doesn't judge anyone by their race for any reason nor supports any program that does, as would Senator Kerry. Compare that with the attitude of most Southerners on racism and you'll find your elected leaders from the Northeast are on the moral low ground. Talk about a low tolerance for scum - how is Karen Kopechne these days? The content of your own posting is a testament to the prejudice and stereotyping you claim to be against. I've lived all over this country and travelled extensively overseas as well. It's my observation that most Americans don't give a damn what race or religion anyone is, regardless of what portion of the country they are from. Travel around and grow up.
