  1. I was wondering if any of the other Mac editors have had any problems when they did the upgrade to 10.3. with there operating system especially with their editing software and graphics programs?. i had heard a few rumors that people were having problems although I'm not sure what they were and i've been hesitant to do the upgrade until i was sure that all would work well when i did it. 2. Maybe you have better equiptment or your just smarter than these people (most likely answer) or have a better ideal what your doing. i certainly don't know but i thought it was strange.
  3. Sense i do not know the project size (total finished project) in uncompressed MB's i can only give my recommendations as to how to encode the video, and things like the number of effects and transitions added only decrease the quality when you encode unless your willing to give it more key frames and higher data rates to make it look better. Try using the MPEG-4 codec for both the video and audio. yea QDesign music 2 gives the audio an echo type of sound unless you use really high data settings but MPEG-4 audio sounds more natural to me. Quick Time pro does not offer a De-interlace option/filter when you compress, so if you click on the timeline tab in FCP3 and then select sequence in the FCP3 tool bar and nest item(s) you have now created just 1 big clip and then select video effects/video/De-interlace and then render and you've just saved your self allot of time by not having to add the De-interlace filter to every single clip in the timeline and you can still work on the project in the second timeline created when you nested, (nesting is a way to add filters to the whole video or sequence) but don't nest until your done with the whole project and your ready to encode. (and yes i'm contradicting myself from an earlier post about De-interlacing). but De-interlacing is still just an option but helps with skydiving video. This is an explanation of the Key frame every setting (in QT Pro video settings) from another post and this setting has allot to do with quality when encoding. And if you can afford it Cleaner 6 (mac) http://www.discreet.com/products/cleaner/cleaner6/ is a great stand alone encoder that imports and exports Quick Time, Real Media and Windows Media files from one program and has more options than you know what to do with. 4. You guys are cracking me up (because i do have a sense of humor contrary to popular beliefs). I know three people at my DZ who were using premier to edit there yearend video pieces this year lose there projects and they all had to start over?. --------------------
  5. My favorite raft exit position is in the raft, in the rear or front facing the rear.(LOL i said in the rear) ---------
  6. I have a voodoo and i really like mine. it has a more stream lined shape than the bone head making it easier to fly head down if you do that kind of stuff. ---------------------
  7. I so agree with your statement. i thought that MPEG-4 was supposed to help with this problem but people keep putting out new codec's all of the time and just adding to the problem. I'm using Cleaner 6 for my encoding now and it's allot better than Quick Time Pro i can pick file types (Windows,Real or Quick Time) and overall file sizes and it does the rest but most people don't need Cleaner but it has made my life easier. 8. Well sense your wanting to put it on CD or DVD i would go with the CD because like you said most people have Quick Time on there computers and allot less have a DVD reader. i prefer the MPEG-4 codec for video and audio but people will need to have at least Quick Time 5 or newer to view an MPEG-4 video so Quick Time (.mov) is better for a larger viewing audience and Sorenson Video 3 like murrys said is the best codec for that. sense i don't know how much work was done on the video it's hard for me to give an exact answer. but if i was making a stand alone video for a CD I'd want to keep the Video Size at custom-600x480, Video Settings-MPEG-4 or the Sorenson Video 3 codec for video, Audio Settings-MPEG-4 (AAC) audio for an MPEG-4 video and QDesign2 audio for a .mov video and audio does not use that much space so 32,000 or 44,000 Khz should work fine, Video Quality-set at best, Keyframe every 5 frames, Frame Rate 30 (Quick Time compresses better with numbers that can be divided into 30 (10,15,30 ) even tho your video is 29.97 FPS), and I'd start with a max Data Rate of 300 KBytes/sec and see if i got a file size smaller than 670 MB's about the max a CD can hold. if the file size was larger than 670 MB's I'd lower the data rate to get the target size i wanted. you could also add Quick Time installers to the CD if you were concerned that people ether did not have Quick Time or you chose the MPEG-4 codec and you can get stand alone Quick Time Windows&Macintosh installers at Apple's Quick Time site for free. i hope this helps but i've probably just confused you even more. 9. The one thing that i really liked when i got FCP3 and now 4 was the ability to keyframe effects in the timeline some thing i could not do with Express also if you get FCP4 you get Live Type, Compressor, Soundtrack and Cinema Tools as part of the package. there are allot of things that FCP can do that Express can't do. but when it comes right down to it Express is more than the casual editor needs and FCP is overkill for most people. 10. I'm using Cleaner 6 for my web site but your question has allot of different answers. i compress for broadband only i would rather have a good looking video for a few than have a crappy looking video for all and i have 500 MB's of web space so i can make my videos larger. my (Quick Time) target data rate is 120-150 KBytes per second or 10 MB's per minute with a keyframe every 15 frames but to make the video look better i might have to go to a higher data rate. if you use allot of effects (like color correcting which i use allot due to the cheaper Mini-DV cams i use) and transitions you'll have to go to higher data rates to maintain quality but in the end who you wish to cater to will dictate how you compress and i've found Cleaners presets are pretty good. 11. Get a .Mac account and you get over 500 royalty free songs with your 100 MBs of web site space for $100 dollars per year. the songs are worth far more than the $100 bucks you pay for the site. -------------------
  12. I keep it all and maintain very detailed records of whats on each tape. 157-mini DV tapes 36-Hi-8 tapes 42-8mm tapes The record keeping part is a pain but sure helps when it's time to edit.
  13. Very nice video Andy and congrads on the marriage. Scott
  14. Hey There Fellow Camera Flyers Well the camera people from Skydive Greene County (Xenia,Ohio) put together another great year end video. at 48 minutes it's to big for me to put the whole video on my site (sorry) but 3 of the pieces are on my site and 2 of them are new, SGC-2003 and Dueling Vidiots. the videos are in the Quick Time format and a broadband connection is recommended. the SGC-2003 video will take several seconds to load before it will start streaming. 15. And the number of posts you've made on this forum doesn't mean you know how to skydive or that you should be giving advice to others. i have over 2000 video jumps and i feel that gives me more of a right to dish out what i think is good advise. you talk about skydiving on the ground and learn in the air. Ok lets just say that from now on you do 500 solo jumps before you start any skydiving discipline or you need 500 jumps to post here. like that would fly very far with anybody. every body has a learning curve some a lot faster than others and there are DZ's out there that have no videographers and need them so should they suffer with a "you need a 100, 300 or 500 jump number" it's just a number and means nothing in the real world of skydiving, hands on experience does. if you want to play with numbers become a mathematician if you want to become a good videographer skydive hard. Get well soon Scott
  16. The earlier you get started the better. i had 100 jumps. and trying to gauge a skydivers ability by jump numbers is a bad way to go about things, if you feel comfortable with the added responsibility get started as soon as you feel ready and don't let others tell you your not ready only you know that. and remember videography/photography is a discipline by it's self.
  17. It's kind of funny. As a Submarine Qualified (i got my dolphins 5/21/1982 on board the USS Silversides SSN-679 and my chest still hurts) Skydiver and having been to the North Pole on the Silversides i can say that we didn't see any Polar Bears. I'm a little surprised that a polar bear would be found that far north they like pack ice i would bet money the sub is not that far under the ice shelf probably very close to Alaska. it's still makes me laugh. Just the facts Mam just the facts. ----------------------------------
  18. SLAYER Rules And i like the rest. Two Slayer concerts in Ohio in october three if you include Cleveland man this state rocks. And SlipKnot is a fairly new band if you look at time together as bands go so maybe leave them out of this.
  19. I agree with diablopilot Plus there is the vector issue with side VS top mount and the alignment for a top mount is straight ahead. and i've seen alot more side mounts get nocked off than top mounts. and on my reserve ride at rantoul this year i was able to get my head all of the way back and see that i had a tension knot and line twists (see video below) which had me spinning on my back and if i had been wearing a side mount i don't think i could have gotten my head back to see what was happening as my risers were behind my head. But i do like side mounts for student work as you can get a better view when holding on to a student and raft dives when your in the raft. I also have a shimming system on my top mount that lets my adjust the angle of my cameras up or down. so my answer is 1. Top 2. Side 3. Belly 4. Shoe 5. Hand
  20. When you say the picture falls apart what exactly do you mean?. The only time that you should have to De-Interlace on purpose is when using still frames captured from video or compressing video for the web (optional) as the tv/viewer try's to show the still frame(s) as a moving image. but since it's Interlaced (odd/even fields) you get a blinking effect because the viewer is trying to show two fields at once. De-Interlacing also adds a slight blur to the video and gives it a softer look. some people use De-Interlace to help give DV video a film look. If the problem is when the video speeds up or slows down i would think it's a problem with the computer it self not being able to play the video back at full speed/resolution having alot of memory can help here. I hope this helps
  21. Out of 3500+ jumps i've made to date i've only had 2 the first 1 at 2200 doing a tandem and number 2 at rantoul (on my wffc video) this year. it seems that most of the people i know have had a much larger number of cutaways than me but i feel this is because they don't try and fix or figure out the problems before cutting it. i've had mals that others said they would have cutaway, but i worked with the problems i had and got out of them with plenty of altitude to spare. and it's the i would have cut that away answer that makes me feel that some will chop a lot faster than others thus giving figures that some have a low number of cutaways while others have a higher number. I'm sure that if asked a lot of the people who have thousands of jumps and a low number of cutaways will also say that they have had questionable situations that could have gone ether way. But when in doubt whip it out.
  22. This is a brief 20 minute Quick Time video (ok so 20 minutes is not to brief ) shot by me and my friends at the World Free Fall Convention 2003. Edit with Final Cut Pro 4, titles by Live Type. ENJOY Scott Snyder NEON SKYS productions ©2003 WFFC 2003 (Got Broadband?)
