While I cant really comment on S/L programs....or AFF for that matter......I started with a IAD program and did my 1st top floor solo at jump#18 (could have been at jump#14 but winter came).... Here's the big thing for IAD's or S/L vs AFF or APF $$$$$$$$$$$$$ Myself at 33 jumps...total cost....$1455(Can)...12 of my jumps have been top floor...thats roughly $1050 (USD). Mind you....my skills in freefall are lacking compared to most AFF/APF students with the same jump numbers I'm sure.....however...I am quite cofident under canopy(stood up 32 of 33 landings) There are pros and cons to all methods. But I am quite happy with my choice to go the IAD way (AFF was avaible at another local DZ,just way more expensive).

take a course...it will save your life....no need to start with a 250cc......but I wouldnt start with a 750cc/1000cc super bike either...there are many nice med size street bikes to learn with...again..research courses avaible to you, and make a informed decission after learning the basics.

So...is skydiving more dangerous than driving? Hmmm...I think so....as I said to another forum member the other day..."if I did not think skydiving was dangerous...I'd prob just drive back and forth to the DZ every day to get my thrills" Are you more likely to have a accident driving compared to skydiving? Hmmm...I think so..... Would you stand a better chance of surviving a driving accident compared to a skydiving accident....HELL YES! Lets face it ppl.....We jump for the rush...and there is no other rush like it......I've been wheel to wheel in a 2800lb,550hp purpose built road race car... deep into the braking zone..great rush...but it dosent compare to the sensation of skydiving...even with my limited jumps. So is skydiving more dangerous than driving?....Who really cares?....all I know...is that I'd perfer to jump than drive...anyday

A emu?...this calls for a story to be told.

"never in my life have I heard of brake fluid needing to be changed. It is hydraulic fluid and does not wear out. Unless there is a leak in your system or a foreign material has been introduced, you should never have to add or replace brake fluid. "
-
I,m sure most ppl's rigs are in much better shape than there cars....most skydivers have a hugh intrest in the gear they jump....however the vast majority know squat about the 3500lb weapon they drive each day. Here's another Q......How many times have you had your main relined vs your brake fluid changed?
-
OK...the skydiving vs driving has been flogged near to death.....how about... Skydiving vs Running with Sissors! (pointed up of course!)

Small or aggressive canopy, no experience, grounded.
DeNReN replied to Jimbo's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
If I show up at a DZ with a brand new 135..(loaded @ 1.3)..only having jumped manta 288's...I hope like hell that I would be grounded!!!.....however...if I show up with a new 190...(loaded @ .85)....I would hope to be able to jump it. loading numbers will not be endorsed by Crusty Burger Inc. -
Stats can be manipulated to prove just about anything....If we relied on such things.....Microsoft could have us believing that Bill Gates is poor I believe there are too many varibles to acuratly debate the skydiving vs driving saftey issue. I am also sure...that more skydivers(you must include all ppl who have jumped..once or 10,000 times) have died in automobile accidents than have died participating in our wonderfull sport. Again...way to many varibles and way too many ways to interpet the stats.... I await being corrected

Compare your car to your rig.......which is in better shape? oopsy...just relized what form i posted in...owell...if its moved to talk back...so be it...just trying to make a point

Actually....I'm a great driver...just agressive....1 accident in 20 years as a lic driver....now close calls...thats a different story. When I skydive......I dont have to worry about some moron on a cell phone crossing the center line and having to take evasive action to the gravel shoulder to avoid a head on collision(ppl with lesser driving skills.OUCH)......mind you...I have low jump numbers and mals(shit) does happen..... Lets try this......what are the odds of having a head on collision under canopy compared to having one in a car?.........BTW...I'm playing devils advociate here.
-
OK....lets sort the stats out.....of the 30 or so skydiving deaths each year...how many are due to double mals.....low hook turns....etc.etc? personally....my agressive driving style prob makes me more prone to a injury from driving (I'm still new to jumping and am very cautious)....however...as my skill and cofidence increase and oneday start doing low hook turns on a high performance canopies....the odds will prob flip

Still using round reserves for student gear at my DZ I think the rigs are WW2 era also

May i suggest a new post to debate the skydiving vs driving thingy...instead of hijacking this thread? Hmmmm...I didnt post this message to this thread....must be the work of those magical greenies.
