Landing looked a bit scary - looked like he rolled over his head after a face plant. Heavy gear, I suppose, that made balance and a controlled PLF all but impossible. ******************************************************************* Fear causes hesitation, and hesitation will cause your worst fears to come true

This is hardly an impressive list - 61 is well within the crack-pot ratio of in the German PhD population (and actually only 46 of those hold a PhD). Except for those 17 with Prof's and couple more no indication that any of the PhD's are actually still in science. At best 20% of those on the list are actually in fields relating to climate science. Many engineers and physicists who probably know about the subject as much as any Discovery Channel viewer or Nature reader. Moreover at least a third of the signers are part of the EIKE thing. Articles on the EIKE web page include: - warning of an impending climate-cooling catastrophe - call T Boone Pickens is "as stupid as it gets" for investing in wind energy. - articles about how perfectly safe and harmless coal and nuclear industries operate - a disparaging and panic inducing article for just about every effort of finding renewable energies (solar, earth, wind, etc). If the chancellor spends 5 minutes on reading this it'll be a waste of her and the German people's time. you can only disprove the existence of things that are in any way defined. I still have no clue what this "god"-thing is supposed to be. Disproving the existence of "god" makes as much sense as disproving the existence of "ij#f$hv7w*e8ino". Too much pressure? (Palin to resign as Gov. of Alaska)

http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20227081.300-quantum-poker-are-the-chips-down-or-not.html Steve has a knack for making math sound exciting -- even if it is really missing the hard points. If high performing quantumr computers become a reality online poker is the least of anybody's problems. Super computers would make public-key type encryptions obsolete, allowing people to hack into just about anything. The path breaking insights are due to people like Peter Shor (and certainly not Bleiler). So although super computers are about at a stage where conventional compters were at the end of the 19th century, there is big money invested by government agencies (NSA, NSF, ...) but also private companies (Micro$oft, etc) into quantum computer research just to be on the safe side. Hey, All of you who make up your minds based on polls
crwtom replied to rushmc's topic in Speakers Corner
Rasmussen numbers for Total Approval went from around 60% in February to about 55% now. Given the list of of big issues going around now this drop is hardly news or a significant movement. These numbers also tend to uniformly higher in other polls. ******************************************************************* Fear causes hesitation, and hesitation will cause your worst fears to come true -

This is actually funny. She calls the bailout money a "bribe" and then goes to accept 70% of it. Next time someone offers me a $1,000 bribe I guess I will be able to accept $700 of it and still consider myself moral. Some identifiers of terrorism: - intent to "terrorize" larger (mostly civilian) public. - by that create fear and mistrust in population - thus destabilize social order - provoke retaliation/reprisals of authority both against its own population but also other 3-rd parties. - thus further destabilize government & society through initiations of such cycles of violence etc. Certainly common crime does not fit this profile even if a lot of people get killed. More non-Muslim examples IRA, Brigate Rosso (Italy), ETA (Spain), RAF (frmr; Germany), PKK (Turkey), various South American "People's" armies. (In many lists of terror organizations Arab ones make up about half) Also somewhat fitting the description the WWII bombings by allies in Dresden and Hiroshima. Military rationale was quite bluntly along those lines - I guess the historical discussion now is more about justified vs unjustified terror. ******************************************************************* Fear causes hesitation, and hesitation will cause your worst fears to come true

filling loopholes, public pressure and shame, perhaps taxation, nationalization, and even hanging or crucification may be justified. What is absolutely not justified is that this has become a more than week long full-time occupation of every media pundit, elected official, and joe blow wannabe in the country. Cheers, T That's a bit like saying we shouldn't expend any effort to catch a murderer, because there are 299,999,999 people left. obviously not -- read more closely what the point was. And if you insist that murder is a good analogy for accepting bonuses ... indeed watching the extend of the bonus debate is a bit like watching all 139 episodes of Nancy Grace on the Anthony murder case back to back. Of course it's a matter for local law enforcement but not for endless public obsession -- unless you're really into that kind of thing. filling loopholes, public pressure and shame, perhaps taxation, nationalization, and even hanging or crucification may be justified. What is absolutely not justified is that this has become a more than week long full-time occupation of every media pundit, elected official, and joe blow wannabe in the country. With all the large numbers flying around I like to count things in household dollars. There are roughly 100 million households in the US, so count one hh$ as 100,000,000 real $'s. So a $800 Bio stimulus plan translates into $8,000 for each hh A $170 Bio AIG bailout becomes $1,700 for each hh and the $180 Mio bonus money translate per hh to ........ one dollar and 80 cents. Sure, if you buy some piece of equipment for $1700 or $8000 and the vendor puts some nonsense fee of $1.80 on your bill you may reasonably tell him this is bullsh**t and he should never do that again. But throwing a hysterical hissy-fit for an entire week over the $1.80 instead of getting on with your life and worrying what to do with your $8000 equipment is bordering on the mentally ill. Here a more sophisticated point of view than I can offer. maybe not exactly the same issue -- but very closely related is Urban America vs Rural America Population density in most large European countries is six times that of the United States -- that is far more progressed urbanization than in the US. Ideology has become very significantly split along the urban/rural divide in the US. Red/blue state or county divisions are sharply along the boundaries of metropolitan areas. (For example, in the main reason Virginia has essentially turned from a red into a blue state is because of expansion of a couple of metro areas). Not too surprisingly the rural mind set stronger towards "everybody for themselves" and the urban consciousness is much more towards "net-working & interdependence". Urbanization of the US will continue in a few ways * The sheer projected increase in population. * Virtual urbanization through information technology * Urban development push b/c of numerous energy, health issues So the long term challenge the republican philosophy is facing may be even greater than the hole they're in right now. These discussions work better without numbers pulled out of thin air. so you seriously want to argue that this percentage (what ever the correct number) will be negligible and acceptable ?? ******************************************************************* Fear causes hesitation, and hesitation will cause your worst fears to come true -

crwtom replied to Andy_Copland's topic in Speakers Corner
if you give guns to 8-11 year olds you'd probably find out that a very large percentage will do something terrible with the gun. Conclusion 10-20% (or so) of all children are very dangerous and should therefore be put into jail until they are save again Cheers, T ******************************************************************* Fear causes hesitation, and hesitation will cause your worst fears to come true
