USPA is as good and as imperfect as any other member organization. I've found them annoying at times, but I'm certain we'd have been outlawed and grounded years ago without them. As individualistic as we are, we can't hope to stay in the air without them. Voting and donating money does make a difference too. There have been a number of controversial Directors with very strong opinions who have been voted in or out of office (or in AND out of office). There have even been Directors who have publicly criticized the Board and/or other individual Directors. Which is all good in a democracy, it's certainly kept up the debate on the hot issues (just look at the current wing loading controversy, now there's one healthy debate). Basically he was a very good politician. Beyond that I truely believe that he was a die-hard racist and should have been out of public office by the 1970s. Lester Maddox also died yesterday, another racist who chased black people out of his restaurant with an axe, then finally closed the place rather than serve them. What stupidity, closing your business rather than trying to understand your potential customers who could make you more money. And that's just the economic stupidity of racism, never mind the moral or spiritual side. It's too easy for us white folks, and we as skydivers are mostly white folks, to overlook what racism has done to our country. It's not like we haven't made some real progress, but look what we've done to ourselves and we never had to do it in the first place. I'm glad that people like Strom Thurmond, Lester Maddox, and George Wallace saw the light in their lifetime, or at least a part of it. But we all need to keep looking for the light.
