i used to work with Coleman...try the "extreme cooler". it has thicker insulation, and will hold ice for 5 days in 95 degrees...if not opened. ________________________________ Where is Darwin when you need him?

hey elsinore peeps, a really cool plane landed on our lake this evening. http://www.oldwings.nl/content/mars/mars_l.htm ________________________________ Where is Darwin when you need him?

super tanker just flew over my house...back towards SCL airport...hmmm, thought it was off to san diego. ________________________________ Where is Darwin when you need him?

the super tanker jet has just been dispatched to San Diego...it is too smokey to fly Lake Arrowhead missions. Gods Speed! ________________________________ Where is Darwin when you need him?

I live up in Hesperia...and have been watching the Lake Arrowhead fires move along the mountains. Last night the fire was miles long...but the winds are down now. and, been watching this make runs over the valley here all day. Its base camp is at the Southern Cal Logistics in Victorville...very cool. http://www.airliners.net/search/photo.search?regsearch=N450AX&distinct_entry=true ________________________________ Where is Darwin when you need him?

Skydiving brotherhood/pilots also?
squirrel replied to NelKel's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
kind of depends. i fly a weight shift E-LSA (trike with hang glider wing). some pilots of 3 axis planes think it is way cool, some think it is "not a real plane" (acording to the FAA and the taxes I pay, it is). PPG flyers snub there noses at me, hang gliders think i make too much noise. i have flown around hot air balloons, and they loved the show. non pilots walk up to it and just smile. so it really just depends on the individual. all i can say is that when i am skimming across the desert at 5' chasing jack rabbits and my shawdow....i dont really care what people think...kind of like when you exit the plane...you just leave it allllll behind. ________________________________ Where is Darwin when you need him? -
now i think i remember who you are...was on a load awhile back with you...i was there with my wife. your the prison mental doc... my buddy is a guard at chino... yo! ________________________________ Where is Darwin when you need him?

woah...where you getting your reserve repacked? we usually do elsinore, 60 dollars now...that 50 dollar reserve ride was a few years ago. more that 60 though if it is a rush job. but then looking at my paper work....there is a separate charge for "pilot emergency repack" is this the pilot chute on the reserve, and, is it not requred to be repacked on a date mandated reserve repack? ________________________________ Where is Darwin when you need him?

totally true...as my wife screams past 2000' with a total mal, she thinks "son of a bitch, this repack is gonna cost me $50...and no more jumps today...dammit!!!" ...out comes the reserve. ________________________________ Where is Darwin when you need him?

Staying Current Vs. Years In Sport
squirrel replied to tonka's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
i have been in the sport for about 5 years, and have around 300 jumps. so i guess i fall into the "staying current" crowd. however, in those five years, i have jumped at roughly 30 DZs or so, many differnt planes, weather conditions, landing altitudes, and with many of the 5000+ jump DZOs, and other up jumpers. its what i have learn from all of this, combined, that makes me feel confident in my abilities. i feel that jumping at just one DZ is great, but you better be heads up if you go somewhere else...many things change at different locations. ________________________________ Where is Darwin when you need him? -

Widespread use of whole-airframe parachutes would not necessarily result in net lives saved. BRS advertises a 182-compatible parachute for a little less than $18,000 before installation. It weighs about 85 pounds. Given that most airplane accidents where a parachute might be useful are related to maintenance or fuel, you would be better off investing the money in an engine monitor and oil analysis program, and you would be better off carrying the 85 pounds as fuel. Additionally, the BRS parachute for a 182 is about 2' x 2' x 3', which reduces cabin room by about 1 skydiver. Mark not sure i agree with the "choice" to have a BRS or do maintenance...you can have both if you spend the money. I have full guages AND a BRS. money well spent. regarding the size...i thought the BRS for 182s was and external pod, on the top of the plane in the center of the wing. There are different containers though, mine looks like scuba tank. ________________________________ Where is Darwin when you need him?

agreed. i understand that using my BRS would result in the "totalling" of the aircraft frame, in my case only about 15k...but, lives would be saved... in many hours of flying my trike, there is only one time, that i thought, just thought, of the BRS. severe thermals, bouncing me, radically flexing my wing. it this case, i had made the decesion to only deploy if my wing failed. i was at sufficent altitude for a deployment. ________________________________ Where is Darwin when you need him?

good point. being a skydiver first, pilot second...perhaps I look at my BRS in a different way. Pilots need to be taught, "fly like it is not there." ________________________________ Where is Darwin when you need him?

I didnt know where to post this comment, so I started this thread. I have an E-LSA weight shift trike (powered hang glider). And it is equiped with a BRS, Ballistic Reserve System. Its an emergency parachute that brings the entire airplane down under a round parachute, deployed by a solid booster rocket. I installed this on my aircraft because I figured that if I jump with a reserve, why not fly with one too. These parachutes are available for aircraft up to 4 passengers, (great for 152 DZ planes) and being developed for larger planes. With the latest accident, I hope that BRS systems are developed for larger planes quickly, it is such a good idea. Low deployment of coarse is not ideal, but, in some cases, there have been saves at very low altitude. More info available here. http://www.brsparachutes.com/default.aspx I think if the military can drop a humvee out of a plane under parachutes, we should be able to have the option to have these systems on GA aircraft. Curious, any small aircraft owners/pilots out there that have this system, and why did you choose to install it. ________________________________ Where is Darwin when you need him?

From my experience it does seem they're required to have a crotchity old pilot, though. Thanks everyone for your responses! This is one of those things I just thought of as I was looking at google maps at some of the bigger airports and the size of everything involved. I was laughing to myself about landing in a Champ at something like that. You know, I need to get off my butt and get my license. check out the new Sport Pilot license. Created by the FAA as an easier and less expensive way to get into flying, but also, to regulate non conforming ultralights (like me) into getting some offical instruction. its cool now that i can land my trike in small airports, and i even flew in an airshow! ________________________________ Where is Darwin when you need him?

Transponders for part 91 use are governed by FAR 91.215 I don't think there is any 'grandfather' clause allowing older aircraft unequipped for transponders in. Class C tends to be pretty congested airspace and I would think it would be pretty dangerous to have a plane up there without a transponder. Oh, i agree. I just remember somewhere in my training that older planes are not required ot have certain things on board, if not originally equip as such. ________________________________ Where is Darwin when you need him?
