  1. When I did my AFF, I was pretty scared for the first 7 or 8 jumps. I was "potato chipping"(wobbling) & that was from not arching correctly. On that 8th or 9th jump, I went into a real nice super smooth stable fall & all of a sudden it "clicked." Ah... this is what it's all about. My instructor must have seen it in my eyes because when I looked over at him, he had a big grin & was giving me two thumbs up. He knew what I had just experienced. That was the moment for me of understanding why people jump.
  2. I guess it might depend on how many vertebrae are fused. I had a lower back fusion L3,4,5 long ago & it hasn't created any problems for me. As others have said, the correct canopy will go a long way...
  3. How come none of the Republicans think that if he really wasn't born in the US, Bill Clinton wouldn't have been all over it during the primaries with Hillary???
  4. Shit...ya'll lost me. I have no idea what the last few posters said. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I read your original post & some people who you refer to with the above obviously have not. It's useless info they are providing for you. I learned on a Mac, went to PC & have returned to Mac. I have the iMac with the 20" screen. It's great! period. You sound like you want an easy to use system that is hassle free. That's an iMac. I have been part of a PC club in the past & even individuals who do their own programming recognize the simplicity of owning a Mac. You'll be happy with the Mac.
  5. He caused Pan Am flight 103 to fall out of the sky. Take him up & throw him out the door so he knows what it feels like.
  6. So far, the stuff I see coming out of Fox are very well researched. __________________________________________________________ Hannity checks his facts with Glenn Beck, so you know it's all good.
  7. You're in good hands in the IAF program at the Ranch. I think doing 2-3 jumps a day is a good idea to build on what you are learning on each jump. Try to stay consistent. I think it will help you with the flow of the program. As a student, check the weather link on the Ranch's homepage. The Ranch seems to have it's own little weather pattern which can be better or worse than it may be wherever you may happen to be, whether you're 20 miles away or 50 miles away... or 5 miles away for that matter. Have Fun! Enjoy!
  8. Post: Is it a major shock that people will exhaust their financial resources no matter how much they make? Of course the 250k group may not be "rich", but they have more options to sacrifice than households making 40k. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ I agree... 40k didn't get you far in 1990 & even less so nowadays. Housing, food, transportation, insurance, utilities, & other basics have risen dramatically, while salaries have remained stagnant. The mindset of some people that I know who make anywhere from 200k to tens of millions of dollars per year is that "everyone lives like they do". I don't know how or why they can think this way, but they do. This is also a group that considers & treats "inconveniences" as emergencies.
  9. In general, I would vote for recommended, except in the case of instruction. I think students should be required to wear helmets, whether you're skiing, doing AFF, learning to ride a motorcycle or whatever. Once you've been exposed & informed of the basic hazards, you can make your own choice. I once saw a sky surfer go out of an otter by doing a little side hop out of the door in basically an upright crouching position. He chose to bend his head over & look down facing into the aircraft. His hair pretty much brushed the bottom of the door. A few of us looked at each other with that "wow, that was close look". If he hit his head, I don't see how it would have not knocked him unconscious.
  10. Jumpdude, Stratostar I emailed Bristol Motor Speedway the link. They probably already know, but just in case they don't, or are unaware of how bad the sites reputation is as a ripoff.
  11. Yes her credit card company will help her out, but that's not the point. The point is she was scammed. She paid to skydive in CT and was then sent to Albany & would not be refunded her money. The dropzones that they send people to have no records of said customer because they do not do business with Thrillplanet, Skyride or any other name. In case you are unaware, they also sell hot air balloon rides, rock climbs, white water rafting, etc..
  12. DougH I talked to Susan on the phone. She got the website address, www.connecticutskydiving.com off of a van in the Hartford area. She would like people to report the van to the attorney general's office if it's spotted. She said that I could post her email address because she would appreciate any help that anyone could offer. I'm not sure if that's the best thing to do. Does anyone have any feedback on that note. She also said there is additional information on complaint.com regarding their(Thrillplanet,SkyRide, etc.) problems.
  13. DougH I saw kallends post & I also live in CT. I was able to contact Susan through email. Dick Blumenthal saw the story on wfsb and is already contacting other attorney generals. If there is any info to support the case or anything that will help, I'm sure Susan will appreciate getting that info to Blumenthat's office. He's good at getting things done. Maybe he can help somehow.
  14. I don't know how far the ride is for you, but I did my aff at Skydive New England and they were great. You should at least check it out, and make a jump out of the otter. Have Fun
  15. I think you are being smart by insuring yourself for your family. In one scenario, you always hear of those who drank all their life & lived to be one hundred or those who die young without ever being the slightest off course of a healthy life. I've been questioning myself about buying and riding a motorcycle because of fuel costs. I used to ride many years ago and loved every minute of my riding. My concern is about the cell phone idiots that I avoid in my 4 wheel vehicles every single day. As far as skydiving, I've felt jumping was a combination of learning who to listen to and who to avoid will help keep you as safe as you can prepare for. I previously rock climbed for over 15 years and felt the same way. I literally know the person who was killed or severely injured going to the store to buy milk. You can't sit on the couch & be afraid & you can't go over your head. My limits are financial more than anything. Have Fun, Be Safe.
  16. I as well as others that I know have used Trekkers with absolutely no problems. Yes something like Fritschi's & AT boots are nicer, but also a lot more money. If you don't skin very often, you might not notice much difference in weight because either you are in good shape to skin up trails or you are not. Even if you are in decent shape, like any sport that you don't participate in on a regular basis, it can be challenging. Renting gear might be the way to go if you have that option.
  17. For an inexpensive way to get started as far as lessons go, take a look at http://www.nextlevelguitar.com They used to have free videos on their site, as well as on You Tube of song lessons but some douchebag copyright lawyer said it was a copyright infringement and they had to pull them down. However it's a great site. Dave Taub who teaches is excellent. The pay premium for a years membership is about $125. You can go a lot farther with your money that way than with traditional lessons. There are other sites out there as well. Go to You Tube & punch in "Guitar Lessons" and you'll be able to find something that interests you.
  18. I agree with SansSuit. I've only had two hard openings with my canopy. They were back to back jumps. After the second jump as I was getting ready to pack, I overheard a conversation about how a slider even a little down from the canopy can cause hard openings. I've been paying closer attention to keeping the slider in place and have not had a problem since.
  19. I would agree with Nightingale. I have had both pc & mac's. Mac is the way to go. The customer service at an Apple store is awesome. If she's close to an Apple store, consider the Pro Care for 1 year at $99. It lets you schedule one on one meetings at the store for technical issues or learning about the programs above & beyond the free lessons. Like Nightingale said, my pc laptop is collecting dust.
  20. Your post is a familiar story to me. I spent about 15 years doing a fair share of technical climbing. I always wanted to jump but climbing was more in line with my budget. As I passed the age of 40 I was able to afford the skydiving thing & wanted to do something that was a little less work than a rock climb. I skipped the tandem & went straight to aff. I think I had sensory overload for at least the first 6 to 8 jumps. When I finally was falling smoothly(not potato chipping) as I've heard it called, it changed my mental aspect of the jumps. You'll feel more comfortable as you go. I was a carpenter for many years & I always felt the same way about a house roof. I was always more comfortable on a climb or a jump. I guess it's that you have a real knowledge of what's going to happen when you go past that edge & know exactly what's next. Have fun with it. It only gets better.
  21. http://www.taxpayer.net/TCS/PressReleases/2007/07-25hcjs.html Leading the pack, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) weighed in with 8 earmarks totaling just shy of $8 million
  22. These were the numbers that were given in the show according to a guy named Steve Ellis who's part of a group called Taxpayers for Common Sense.
  23. Even though I was skeptical when I heard it, I have seen this work a few times. Add some soap & water to a gauze pad. Rub it in a circular motion over the tick. The tick will back itself out.
  24. Bill Moyers Journal did a good piece on earmarks last night(27th). We've gone from roughly 3,000 earmarks in 1996 to over 32,000 in 2007. Even though reps like Flake from AZ are fighting earmarks, he went 0 for 39 until he had one repealed for a mere $129,000.00. A group called Taxpayers for Common Sense are trying to bring this to the public eye but of course there are rules set up to make it extremely difficult at best.
