I agree, this has already been bounced around a couple times on this forum. The instructor looks like he puts a half nelson wrestling hold on Lutz' attempt to pull the cut away handle. The characterization that his instructors watch him go bye-bye is tabloid journalism. The main side was doing all sorts of gymnastics to catch up with someone who I thought was just a panicked student until the lawsuit hit. Then it was an instructor trying to save a free fall well trained dick head. Let me speak with authority on one side of this, since I am brand new. I always knew down deep inside, that I may have to pull my own handle(s) from my AFF-1 jump on. My instructors taught me that as well. I am lucky to have people like Shark from Elsinore, who always drilled that into my head. Nevertheless, I knew I had two people hanging on to me who would not let anything bad happen to me if they could help it. However, I knew I could screw things up bad enough that I would be on my own. Shark (my AFF main side JM) had to guide my hand to the PC handle, since I kept grabbing his left hand mounted altimeter. He guided my hand to the handle and we pulled jointly. Now he is suing me for half my assets since he thinks that qualifies "us" for community property. All kidding aside, my AFF-1 jump was one I did where I rationalized my instructors would keep me safe no matter what. Ron wrote a very good reply to that, but I will admit I got out the first time with my initial thoughts in mind. That said, I have not "lutzed" a jump to date. Repeated a level, yes, but never panicked to the point I grabbed a random handle and made innocent people chase me to save my life and then sued them. This was hopefully a one time thing, and I believe the Lutz lawsuit was thrown out. I'm 46, and didn't start jumping until 45. But I was busy worrying about a galactic expressway getting built through my DZ. Dolphins have ocean DZs, they invented water diving over 1,000 years ago where they toss themselves at the seabed, only to have to throw out an aquachute to save themselves. Karen, I'm view #42. I think what I am having trouble understanding is the assumption that in old age you'll be sick and/or debilitated. My grandmother died at 84 from cancer. We watched her waste away, and I don't want to go like that. But for 83 years, she was at her prime, she never slowed a bit in body or mind. A bit of exaggeration there, but she still put in 10 hour workdays up until her last couple months. I'm 46, in reasonably good health, I stay active, but I would not let what I may be like in my eighties influence a decision about whether I see tomorrow or not. Me personally, I'd throw in the towel and watch my skydive DVDs with my family, born and unborn explaining what a fun time it was, but I'm having more fun seeing them. Remster, Torrey Pines is the place Skymama is talking about. And yes, Blacks Beach is a swimsuit optional beach below the Gliderport. As far as checking stuff out, like someone said the Gaslamp in downtown is a great area. It was one of the most stunning renovations of a run down area I've ever seen, now it is top notch. Good clubs, jazz, blues, rock, whatever, it is there. The Zoo is world famous, and if you are into aviation, the San Diego Aerospace Museum is in Balboa Park along with the Reuben H. Fleet Space Theater (great IMAX movies). Sea World is just a few minutes away from downtown. Old Town is fun, and a great place for Mexican food and classic toilet bowl margaritas, named not for the size of the glass but for what you will spend hours looking into if you drink enough of those babies. Now, if you want to get a bit off the beaten path, drive up the Pacific Coast Highway into the beach towns that start just north of Torrey Pines. Encinitas, Del Mar, Leucadia, and you can find some great small restaurants. Tijuana is just a trolley ride away, but be careful down there. The rules are different. If you drive yourself, buy the car insurance. Just do it. From downtown, Elsinore is about an hour and 15 minutes away, and Perris is about 20-25 minutes from Elsinore. The mountains are only 45-50 minutes from downtown, the desert just 15 minutes beyond that. You can stay downtown, or about 10 miles north, and be perfectly set up to get where you want when you want, but we do have some bad rush hours here. If you get some hotels and want advice, let me know. Hope you enjoy your stay here, it has been home for me most of my life!
