  1. I disagree. An accident has a much higher chance of doing that, though. Bob Bob Marks "-when you leave the airplane its all wrong til it goes right, its a whole different mindset, this is why you have system redundancy." Mattaman

  3. Tom, Excellent points. I wish we'd treat DZ airspace as restricted areas before an accident happens. But that would be pro-active, wouldn't it? Restricted areas are HOT or NOT. I mean, the military up at Edwards has restricted airspace nearly the size of New Hamphire and Vermont almost all the time. Can't we do something around Perris and Elsinore, like a 3 mile radius on an on call basis? That eliminates the problem you mentioned with different facilities working different altitudes. Thanks again for your post. Bob Bob Marks "-when you leave the airplane its all wrong til it goes right, its a whole different mindset, this is why you have system redundancy." Mattaman
  4. There are several of us ATC types on dz.com, and we're all skydivers. These clips serve as excellent training tools to educate us on DZ operations. If you have any that aren't on skydivingmovies.com, send 'em my way. This incident is a bit hard to understand, since we should have been in contact with both the jet and the jump plane. If the jet got away from us on a vector, and we lost comm, we should have told the jump ship. I just don't know for sure. When I was trained as a controller, I was taught that the airspace was to be sterilized when the jumpers went. That meant actively vectoring traffic around the airspace no matter what you called it. So, for Class A, B, and C (which almost none of us regularly jump in or into), we are required to separate non-participatory aircraft from the airspace. For Class D and E, there is NO such requirement, just advisories. Our equipment is limited in its ability to detect and track aircraft that don't have an operating transponder. We are then getting just a "primary" return, raw radar energy bouncing back to the antenna from the skin of the airplane. Since the cross section of the aircraft can change, and the return is already weak, these targets tend to be intermittent. Long story short, we don't see everybody out there. So, take a good close look outside before jumping. The other issue has to do with the ability to see traffic. In the door, if you have traffic say, 1,000 ft. below, and 150 feet or so behind you, going the same direction as jump run, you can see the aircraft moving against the ground clutter. Suppose you jump anyway. As you transition off the hill, your relative velocity (speed and direction) to the traffic changes. In the air, a collision threat will NOT appear to be moving against the background. That makes it SO much harder to spot. Check out the two videos again, with the Chipmunk you can hardly see any movement until the end, it just appears to get bigger. You see movement when the jumper deploys. The jet is moving across the ground relative to the camera the whole time. It is the threat that is hardest to see that is the most dangerous. Rambling done. 6. It's Fiddle Back and they're not deadly. Here's one of many links of them: http://www.animalbehavior.org:8081/ABS/ABSNews/1039832717/index_html Hmmm. Try this one: http://library.thinkquest.org/C007974/2_4bro.htm Drop for drop the venom is much stronger, and while the bite itself may not kill you, gangrene will. Gaydar?

Yes, to me it is! Bob Swedishcelt, I answered too soon. If you need to calibrate your gaydar, I can help. Let me know when you'll be in the Elsinore/Perris area and we can discuss this. I'll have to throw you in with other females, and observe. But I am from the government and here to help. I think Frenchy will help out too. No worries. 9. Well, thank you for scaring the living shit out of me forever. I hate those things, and I cannot reconcile the idea of a benevolent God with their existence. No problem out in nature, but once they decide to co-habitate with me they are at my mercy. They look just, wrong. And I will scream like a girl if one is on me when I don't expect it. That's the truth, and has been since I was a child. Rationally, I understand their place in nature. Rationally, THEY should understand how I feel about them. That's why I'm at the top of the food chain, and they are relegated to octo-vision looking at eight of me smashing their sorry ass with a newspaper. Spiders are everywhere, but not in my tea or house. Seriously, watch out for the Violin Spider, or Brown Recluse. MUCH more deadly than a black widow, and VERY prevalent in the Southwest US. That bite will cause blood poisoning and total collapse of your circulatory system. They are about the size of a quarter to half dollar, with a distinctive violin like pattern on their back. I've almost lost two friends to those bites. IF you even think you got bit by one of these, go to the hospital NOW. Gaydar?

Hey Darcy! Not important, just curious. NOT that kind of curious! So, me straight and someone else gay, put us next to each other. Who has the best gaydar? I say we're even. Hugs and kisses to you girl! Glad to hear all the school stuff is going well. Hang in there, the sky will be there with the incredibly sexy me falling from it as I catch up to your jump numbers!!! Gaydar?

Question came up in conversation today about Gaydar. The innate ability to detect whether someone is gay. My position is that it is an ability that is equal whether you are gay or not. Someone else thinks this is exclusively a gay talent. I disagree. What do you all think? 13. Yes, I did. I bought myself (the old man) a couple beers and was honored to share the table with you and listen to you. I apologize for overlooking that. I cannot thank you enough for your contributions to both the sport and my life. I would be unspeakably honored to do a jump with you, sir. 16. Now that this thread has been miraculously resurrected, I hereby announce the 2006 All Man Boogie. This sausagefest will be held probably at Elsinore, six months to the day from the Chicks Rock Boogie, on the opposite side of our orbit around the sun further reducing our chances of encountering leftover estrogen. Some of the events: -all man tracking dive and optional cock dock, made famous by vdschoor and company on skydiving movies.com -eight way Phallus Phormation, two points required, flaccid and erect. -if we do hybrids, that will refer to cross dressed men who are comfortable in their sexuality jumping with men in normal Man Attire. These are just a few ideas. Please feel free, fellow XY'ers only, to add. More on specifics later..... 17. Well, I wrapped up my A license in July, and it has been awhile since I posted on what I've been doing. So here is the latest. Jump 26 was my first non coach/instructor two way. Dz.com's very own champu was the suspecting victim. Linked exit, out we go. The exit was OK, but even after getting my A license, my first real two way revealed bad habits. Legs were too far in, and as I released grips he backslid away from me. I thought it was so cool that even with way over 500 jumps he was giving me the peace sign as he ditched me in the open sky. Search and rescue was the title of this jump. Jump 28 was with a 2 way silver team national medalist. I corrected some flaws in his technique in the air with AFF signals. He gave me some signals I hadn't seen before, but chalked that up to his inexperience. Great jump from my perspective but damn my rotten luck my car was ablaze from what I was told was an errant solar flare. I hooked up with my dive partner for a debrief, who smelt faintly of gasoline. I figured he filled up his car waiting for me to drift down to earth. Seven days later was my first three way. The jump wasn't bad either. But I digress. Jump 34 I had my new jumpsuit, and another excuse as to my flying ability. Actually, it took several jumps to get used to it, and some tunnel time, but BEFORE you get your first jump suit, talk to someone with experience. I mean it. This is a HUGE decision and I think many of us newbies don't take that into account. Jump 37 was my first jump at Perris. Up until now I had only downsized once, on AFF-3 from a NAV280 to a NAV260. The largest canopy Perris had available was a 230. Spectre, 7 cell, with turbo collapsible PC and slider. I shat myself. New DZ, new canopy, new rig (Infinity). I managed through my choked sobs to communicate my concern. The Perris crew slapped me. They asked me how my landings were (almost all tip toe stand up on the NAV260), and then slapped me again. Actually, they were great, and advised me to pull higher than usual, and to expect a much faster level out and responsive flare. The jumps went fine, and I wrung the canopy out at altitude to the point I felt comfortable. It flies faster and really seems noisy. Oops. Forgot to collapse the slider. Accuracy was MUCH easier. I started to nail the target within 10 meters (Metres, or 30 feet) on a very predictable basis. The rig felt really light and small on my back, with a hackey that was much higher than I was used to, but I nailed it. Jump 42 was my first Skyvan exit, a true life experience. Again, at Perris. It so happens my partner and I were going out first. I'm sitting at the back of the starboard bench and stupidly say this is my first Skyvan jump, how do I work the door? No problem from the other jumpers say they. With the tailgate wide open, they tell me when we get to 200 feet, I have to lean out and twist the red handle to get the door to go down. Just hang on to something really tight and don't fall out. I decide to assert myself through my sobs and with the F bomb that no, that WILL not happen. The ensuing laughter and pointing makes me realize I just got punked. They were great, and this exit was one of the most memorable ever. I dish it out, and I realize I have to take it, as well. Jumps 46-52 were under the Elsinore gear, NAV220s. Loved every one of them. First four way, and I also hit the middle of the "X" two jumps in a row. Jump 52 was a real learning experience with Santa Ana winds kicking up and dragging my partially flared ass at 17 mph 90 degrees crosswind. We all got down ok, but a camera flyer got hurt on landing. One of my four way partners on the previous jump. Anyway, lots of learning and concentrated experience are contributing to my training, and I appreciate that. Thanks to all, and I look forward to Chicks Rock this weekend for my first helo jump as well as hanging with the Chicks!! 21. Psycho Bob, Now you've done it. Like the old comedy routine, "Slowly I turned, step by step....." So in my defense, the rig was not my "own" it was rented gear, and I will be completely honest. I was a-scared. New canopy to me packing wise, and I would have auto panicked when I only counted 7 cells instead 9. Plus it would have been my first zero-P pack, while Black Velvet has the F-111 material. It packs itself while I'm looking like I'm humping my rented canopy for hours. Free flyers agreed with my decision, but I'm not sure that is an argument in my favor. Fun weekend, and thanks for the Sky Van jump!! I was glad I could get you stable. 22. All, I was privileged to be there for the attempt, and they were awesome! It was their next to last jump, and they then donated I think 110 slots to Jump for the Cure after that. Even watching from the ground, you could tell this was the best formation they had flown. Video was great. Congrats to all on the successful completion of this 110 way! 23. Judy, The races are great! Even today, on the first day of elimination heats, some great runs! I can't wait for the quarters, semis, and finals. This is a blast, and we need to make this a DZ.com event, and have all of us just jump in. Temps are moderate, winds a little high, but not bad. More later, you fiesty redhead, you!!
