you are right. Sorry! I messed that up. Now my credibility looks bad. It is a senior rigger. Apologies. I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend to the death your right to say it. - Voltaire

Couch Freaks - Dollar Daze 2003
Malfunction replied to Raefordite's topic in Events & Places to Jump
Rantoul had a DZ.com tent. What about CF? We gonna try to get a DZ.com jump together? I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend to the death your right to say it. - Voltaire -
Oh, yeah! I think I blew the firewall at work though. It crashed after watching it... Maybe it couldn't handle the view... I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend to the death your right to say it. - Voltaire

This is tricky because packing is easy, but a lot of places want the packer to be a master rigger because the BSR (don't remember which one, CSSRIGGERS could answer that one) requires the packer to be under the direct supervision of a master rigger. Most MR's don't want to waste the time. If you get into a small, local owned DZ, you may be better off. Roll-packing tandems is the easiest and safest way. I can roll-pack a temdem (either ZP or F111) and it will be a soft, onheading opening. Learn to roll pack, it is 10 times faster, too. I owned one for 6 years. Good rig, very strong, stands up to most everything. Never had a cutaway with it, so I can't give first-hand info about that. Comfortable, Light (compared to the Vector and Dolphins I jumped). Had to replace a legstrap after doing a VERY LOW swoop over pavement (so low that I also had to replace my pants, shorts, etc, but that is for a different thead). Customer Service is good, usually fast (my rig was gone for only 3 weeks to get leg-strap fixed and harness resized), and online. They are widely used (my DZ uses them for student rigs as well) so most riggers will be familiar with them. Can't say enough good things about them. The only thing I didn't like was the color scheme (but then again, I bought mine second-hand). Enjoy! It is a GREAT rig! I agree with your reasoning. I think, though, that we as jumpers are the only ones that blame the jumper when he/she makes a mistake that costs them their lives. But there are times when circumstances dictate the invervention of another person to keep the jumper from making that mistake. Unfortunately, we live in a "pass the buck" society. Everyone wants documentation for this, documentation for that or else you are going to get sued (remember McDonalds was sued for a couple mil after some shmuk spilled hot coffee on himself. MickeyD's did not have DOCUMENTATION that the coffee was hot). I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend to the death your right to say it. - Voltaire

Yeah, the FCI Pro Series. (Flight Concepts Int). I only had one issue with it, but that was because the Vector I had it in had loose PC Spandex and the damn PC slipped out while doing a teeter-totter jump. (We took out a 'Triple Ride Rocker' from a 206 for my 200th jump, we hit 160 mph...with a pc attached to the center of the teeter-totter for stability) I had a few bruises from the opening, but it wasn't the canopies fault. It just isn't made to open at 160... I saw the lines out of my perifial (sp) vision and thought... 'um, shit' WHAM! Raise your hand if you are currently grounded.
Malfunction replied to Muenkel's topic in The Bonfire
Grounded. No Time, Money, Gear (sold to a dude in Russia who wanted to jump more than me). Hmm, that should have reversed the money issue, but it didn't... Speaking of no gear, does anyone have a d-bag and pc that can be used for a Stilletto 135? -
I have been jumping a ProSeries 135 for numerous years now. I have been to tons of DZ's, yet my ProSeries is the only one I have EVER seen. I have read that a few people have jumped them. Does anyone have any feedback on these canopies? It is now my second main behind my Stilletto (I don't think I need to justify that), but there are a lot of people at my DZ that won't use my ProSeries even to wipe their @ss. Anyone have thoughts about this canopy? I don't think it is THAT bad of a canopy, but others seem to think it is the bane of all jumpers. Sorry to any FCI reps that read this, but this is the general pulse of the Midwest toward this main. Yes, you are right, of course. I concede that. Hypothetically, lets say you are a DZO or are in charge of renting the equipment at the DZ. I walk in with my logbook showing I have been jumping a 1.5:1 for the last year or so, but I tell you that my gear is still in Iowa and I have jumped a 1.9:1 (Jedei 107 with exit weight of 200) a couple times, but never logged it. No other documentation confirms that. You rent me a Jedei 107 and I frap on the landing. Now, could the USPA card with the approved wing loading have prevented this from happening (assuming you asked to see my lisense)? Then you realize that when I frapped, I wasn't wearing glasses or contacts although the card said I had that restriction. I still signed the waiver stating that I was up to date with no major health issues, you checked my reserve card and logbook. I am going to assume your next argument. No, the card probably would serve no general purpose on a daily basis at a known DZ with your own gear. But at a different DZ, while signing the waiver and checking the reserve card and logbook, the DZO (or whomever else may be in charge of registration) could check this card and know that if you ask someone to demo a Icarus Xtreme 88, but have only been jumping a Stilleto 135 (again, 1.5:1), they would know that you probably shouldn't do it and stop it BEFORE you frap. Maybe at that point, the DZO could tell you that if you plan to demo a canopy, maybe the Samurai 135 is all the extreme you should go. *bear in mind that my calculations of wing-loading is exit weight / square footage* I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend to the death your right to say it. - Voltaire

Out of those that jump 200 times in a year, how many are lifetime members of USPA? Everytime they would renew their membership, USPA sends out an updated card. Updated issue solved. USPA keeps most of that info anyway. When you fill out a membership card or take a lisense test, it asks how many jumps you have. I would think that if the BSR for wing-loanding is passed, the card shouldnt say what kind of canopy you fly, rather the wing-loading that you are qualified for. I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend to the death your right to say it. - Voltaire

dude, i understand what you are saying. society is headed to the computer inplant right after birth. or maybe the barcode on the back of the head or something. who knows. but that is a bit more extreme than i am thinking. i am thinking short term. you are right, USPA does not govern our sport; you don't have to be a member to jump, but to jump at certain DZ's you do. 2 summers ago I went to a week-long boogie and would not be allowed to jump unless i joined USPA again, before i could register. Other boogies make sure you have a B liscense to jump. if you are not uspa member, how can you have a B lisense? But i digress. Let me use the argument "IF." If you are a member, and IF the BSR for wingloading is passed, IF we decide that we want to obey the new BSR, and IF we want to have readily accessable info, then USPA simply altering the layout of the lisense card to include canopy control rating as well as jump rating [example] (Jumer name : X (lisense : A (jumps : 49 (max wingload : 1.3:1 (Medical history : no history (Restrictions : contact / glasses) could go a long way when an unknown jumper shows up at my DZ, wants to rent equipment and burns in. The investigators now know IMMEDIATELY that the jumper was approved for 1.3:1 wingload (so the DZ would not give the jumper something unsafe), the jumper had no prior medical issues, but had to wear glasses. OK, now the investigator can rule out the possibility of jumping blind, having a seizure mid-jump, the DZ is accountable if the jumper has rented a canopy that is more than 1.3:1; and we can all now start concentrating on the actual issue, rather than speculation (as in Holly's thread). I know that is long-winded for a simple explaination, but I want to make it clear that this COULD have the potential to help, should an investigation have to take place. We strapped up a dude with a skateboard behind a Honda 800cc motorcycle and went the distance of our runway. Then we strapped a pilot's rig on him and popped the cord. We weren't allowed to do that again. I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend to the death your right to say it. - Voltaire

Please be careful when jumping with Tandem's
Malfunction replied to Rdutch's topic in Safety and Training
let me prefice by saying that I have the following opinion at a boogie or at my home DZ. I have to say, I have chased numerous tandems. I do not have a tandem rating, AFF rating nor am I a videot. At my DZ, and at other small-time DZ's I have jumped at, tandems are the majority of business. I probably have as much experience chasing tandems as some of our videots (less now since my jumps have decreased annually). But for someone to say no to me if I brought the business and knowing my jump experience and having the logbook to back it up seems kind of prejudice. If it is a boogie that you are TM at (like couch freaks, labor day, Iowa), or at my DZ, I feel that I should be allowed to accompany my guest (unless boogie rules prohibit it). If it is your DZ and I am new there, fine, I agree with your rules. But to say that it is all the time, every time, if you don't know someone, they aren't going, seems kind of judgmental, don't you think? Note: no personal attacks meant, just put yourself in the chasers' shoes. I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend to the death your right to say it. - Voltaire -
