John I like that you want to support your state and think your idea is best suited for in the garage like Keith suggested. Down the road from my home we had some news about a gargae door just the other day. seems the owner placed the word Sodomy on the inside of his garage door windows along with a large photo of his wife. here is the story of what the area did to take action to this man. seems that the home owner is in jail and got his windows painted over! http://www.myfoxkc.com/myfox/pages/Home/Detail;jsessionid=039792B80C48C4A32FFC3508845F43F2?contentId=6922352&version=1&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=TSTY&pageId=1.1.1&sflg=1 good luck! Liability as an Instructor - How to Minimize It?
jdthomas replied to velvetjo's topic in Instructors
duty, duty to act and breech of duty.. scarey stuff! Is the risk worthy of the reward? I just gave up all my ratings this year and will never take those on again. Joe www.greenboxphotography.com -
I'll wait until I'm 50, and no one cares anymore. Why would it matter if you where 50, nudist don't care already thats why they are at these camps. We used to buzz on that was near a dz I jumped at, I often thought it would be fun to jump in there and yes I would go naked. www.greenboxphotography.com

I used to think my low end eureka did a good job, then i got a dyson and went over a floor that i had just "cleaned" with my eurak and my dyson picked up so much stuff that it made me rethink about how clean my floors are. Now here is the deal, you say you have cat hair! I had to replace my hvac unit this last fall as the owners before me had cats. 3 cats and the people did not change the filter on the hvac much if any and they may not have vacumed much either.. anyway the hvac went to hell because of all the cat hair in the unit. when the guys pulled the cooling area off the unti it looked like a barber shop floor at the end of the day. the dyson may cost you more now, but can help save your hvac unit, that will save you so much money in the long run that you should not want to buy a cheap vacume. www.greenboxphotography.com

Do think a jump pilot has a reason to be angry when this happens?
jdthomas replied to peek's topic in Safety and Training
Quote[ . I do understand your concern about DZO’s and gear maintenance compromises. I can assure you it wasn’t a factor in this incident as I know I pulled the drogue out moving in the aircraft. reply] But you had stated the spandex was loose and there was to be some sewing going on, now I read that you are saying you caused the problem and that it was because you where dragging yourself in the plane. was it both? you also state that this dragging was out of the norm for you. these are all signs that lead to the failure of the system, we see it time and time again in these forums. break one link in the chian it it all fails has been beaten in to our heads and yet we still see it every week here. So are you going to start exiting diffrently or still drag your butt on the floor? what has been the lesson and what would you share with others? I understand that we want to accomadate each passenger, make the jump comfortable and fun, yet we often over look safety int eh process. I will tell you that I did not break my normal routine and just said to the passenger i am sorry this is uncomfortable but this is the method that is safe for us and we will only be uncomfortable for a moment. I always sat on my knees in the cessna, this gave me the abaility to check my gear and protect my handles and I see many other TMs here echo the same thoughts. At the end of a long tandem day it may be appealing to sit and relax but I would say that being on your knees is a well worth not going through a loose drouge. Note to add to the conflicts within the post, I am not sure that gary ever named who the TM was and no one would have known if the TM had not come on here to say it was himself. I applaud the TM for defending his position, but we would have never know it was you or gary flying the plane if you had not stated so. to the original post we would have seen it as a learning experience without the verbal exchanges between the partys. best of luck to you and may this never happen to you or anyone again. Do think a jump pilot has a reason to be angry when this happens?
jdthomas replied to peek's topic in Safety and Training
If the spandex is showing wear enough that there may be concern or needs to be fixed then why is it being jumped? your own statement of "A more critical eye is needed when inspectiing the high use and wear areas." kind of bothers me.. are you saying that your eye is not critical enough to discover any issues or are you saying that you have a critical eye for these issues yet still jumped a rig that obviously allowed the drouge to come out of it's pouch. I am not trying to be critical of your chocie to jump in the video sitiuation as i think I would have gotten out of the aircraft as well just asking that if the gear is an issue then why was it being jumped? what is the motive? Money? why not delay the jump until the gear is serviced and make things safer for all involved. I have often seen pressuers from DZO's to jump, and understand that if a person is a DZ worker he can be torn between two worlds, one of wanting to please the customer and dzo and make money for himself.. I am NOT saying this is an issue here but have seen corners cut in the past to make a jump on gear that may have been out of date or not is the best of condition. statements like oh we will fix it this week it will be fine for a few more jumps have no place in this activity. once again NOT saying that was the case here. I just wonder the motive to jump gear that needs serviced or is sloppy in it's pack job. www.greenboxphotography.com -

I as well wonder if this could be a rigging issue, I have done a few tandems myself and never had much if any of a problem with the drouge coming out and I always seemed to be int eh back of the bus squirming my way forward for the jump. If the pouch spandex is worn then it's somethin that needs be be fixed and not jumped, if the packer is not packing teh drouge correctly then that needs to be resolved and these jumps should not take place. I have watched the video sevral times and am torn on when I thinkt eh drouge comes out in relationship to the jumpers bodys to the aircraft.. part of me thinks the drouge was loose and known the the TM at a spot when they could have safely come back in the plane, but I am not 100% on that and think if student and I both where out of the door far enough when I realzed the drouge was out i too would have just held it and bailed and figuerd out what to do so this never happens again. Either way i want to thank Gary and the Tm for posting something we can learn from and that both are willing to still talk about all be it in a limited capacity. Joe www.greenboxphotography.com -

We had a dog go through the TPO, it was the best for her but we where right on the time limit for her age. But it worked and she is fine today. Our 10$ pound rescue is now worth about 8-9,000$ in total vet bills and worth every penny of it. You have to keep them inactive, it was so hard for us to do to a puppy for the time it took to heal. But you have to do it! Small cage for the recovery, we would walk her outside with a leash to use the bathroom and right back into the kennel when she was done. don't let them play no matter how much you or they want to! Good luck, I hope that you can do the TPO! I hope that the DOG can is what I should say. Joe www.greenboxphotography.com

I have seen some impressieve video of these things getting smashed at high speeds and yet the compartment is in fairly good shape, one of the videos the tester still was able to open the door after the car got smashed! I dont own one because I got more car for the same price with the same gas mpg (dodge neon) as I was not impressed with the smart cars mpg. I also agree that the scooter death rate will be higher, you are correct in that these people do not usally know how to ride and thats why they buy the scooter (as well as price and a few other things) working in ems we have already saw a new rash of injurys. I would imagine it is the same as when the moped came out in the 70/80's. I know then that many of my friends had those and a few of those guys got the pimp limp from wrecking those silly 50cc things! Oh and Jimmy Coiner said the smart car is for pillow huggers, I am not sure what that means but Jimmy said it and thats good enough. www.greenboxphotography.com

I would say that I have the knowledge, at least I think I do. I don't have the surgical ward that other have as I am just an EMT-I, so I have some capabilities there not many though. My knowledge of plants to eat is good, I was one of those boy scout types all the way thru that program. I have been tested thru natural acts, lost power and utilities for 3days one spring a few years ago and spent a week with out power one winter. pipes froze heat did not work. I closed off my kitchen, got a warm morning heater (ventless natural gas) and burned candles for added heat. used my camp stove to cook with and warm water for baths. It was primative and cold but I survived it. We have grow lights in our garage and keep our deck plants alive all winter, I suppose I could build a garden down there as well and grown food stuffs. Very prepared! Shelves upon shelves of camping gear, generator for power loss! and a few days worth of fuel for the sucker! We have a small solar charger for our phones and mp3 player. Guns, lots of guns with lots of ammo and the ability to use the firearm profeciently. Food for us and the dogs for a few weeks, water ready to go as well. We also have sheets of plywood and other building materials stock piled as I enjoy wood working, so we can cover windows, doors holes int he roof if we have to.. oh and lots of classic blue tarps! the back up plan, we have a horse trailer that has living quaters, we keep it at a seperate location and if we have to we can live in it. the third back up on that is our camper that we keep at another seperate location. Wow, reading this you would think we are paranoid, but this all is stuff we already have and it just makes us prepared. With the recent tornados we have already lived in the basement several times this spring! it' comfortable down there thats for sure. Joe www.greenboxphotography.com

To me as an EMT everybody has germs that I don't want and thats how we treat them. Kind and with compassion but at a safe distance with gloves and a mask on. Universal percautions is the name of the game these days. I may love you like a brother but i can't touch your body fluids to save you without the right gear on, it would suck to sit back and watch knowing that I could help but who I have my life, wife and family to take care of. I carry a jump kit with me in my car and at the DZ just incase. Joe www.greenboxphotography.com

Do you charge additional for someone to watch?
jdthomas replied to fpritchett64's topic in Gear and Rigging
Thanks! I try to give back to the community, the other night I did a rig and when asked how much the danages where I said just pay Tori the daughter of the jumper who was killed in the plane crash what you would have paid me, I got nothing from that repack except knowing that I helped her out. Back years ago I used to charge a deli sandwich on demand for a repack, If I was busy doing tandems all day i could call upon my customer to run to town and get that subway meal for me. to me that was a better payment then the 50$ I was charging. after I stopped doing tandems I charged but gave half the profit to animal chairty. now Tori gets half. Dave makes some great points, dress for the ride as your life depends on it because it just may. I just find it strange that I went to more bullet bike crashes then any other type, I think that sometimes those bikes just evoke riders to do stuff they normally would not do, the quick power, the speed and all of that just seems to overwhelm even the best of the guys sometimes and makes them do silly stuff. Like the park ranger in western kansas told me about rattle snakes, young men between 16-30yrs old are usally the only ones ever bitten by the snakes and always in thier dominate hand! I think bullet bikes sometimes have that same alure! www.greenboxphotography.com
