/me is not happy, i come back to see 903 new msgs and read this thread.... that's at least five minutes modem time lost not downloading skydiving movies :p Hehe, what a wierd thread ;) Ed

I'm up for it? or was there not an offer? i'm too tired to read this properly :p

I think Mike's points are very valid, good post!. Especially the part about Iona knowing she wants to go into skydiving and so is doing AFF.... I myself started with sl progression, i "nailed the exit" and progressed onto five second delays within i think 9 jumps. However, because the english winter was coming up, i decided to stop sl progression and try and save for aff next (read : this) summer. The reason why i stopped was the problem with currency, i don't know and therefore cannot speak about in the us or elsewhere, but certainly at my dz in england, 4weeks and you go back a stage. Being 1.5hours away from the dz and unable to drive or get the train there without detouring through london, this was particularily difficult for me. I think in my case this is where the advantages of AFF come in, if i was doing it in england i could probabaly camp at the dz for two weeks in august and get it done, sl just wouldn't get done in that time imho. Basically b/c in my limited experience i have found sl lifts just don't go up very often, maybe 3-4 a day, which means you can jump twice a day tops, and thats if the weathers good! (for those who don't know england, it rarely is). So anyways, i would say both course have their separate merits, but for me AFF is definately the better choice, i can do it for c. £900 in Spain, where sl would cost me about £700 to do in a lot longer time with most probably a lot more stress. Best of luck whichever course you choose, but I know i'll be AFF-ing over at Empuriobrava this summer (read : i hope i will be ) Blue Skies, soft landings etc Ed

Now although this is highly amusing i feel i have to put my english countryman's hat on, and say that fout n mouth is vewy vewy serious and not to be made the subject of jokes. (chuckle chuckle) Ed

Does this not sound just a litttttle bit unsafe? I fully realise some people are awesome canopy pilots, and most skydivers will be very efficient ones, i don't have that much experience to draw on, but surely they should "make" the landing areas be further away? This may not sound quite as i meant it, it's not a "dig" at that DZ, just a comment. Ed

Sounds nasty! I seem to remember hearing about an instructor who landed ontop of a taking off helicopter in england a few years back.... At my home DZ the landing area is wayyyyyyy away from the runway, like 400metres, do some DZ's have them closer? (i've only ever been to the one) Ed

It's times like this where i feel i should delve into my saving schedule (read : scrimping for AFF) and renew my subscription Ed

Ok, so i come home last Thursday to find out lightning has struck a telegraph pole outside my house sent a pulse along the line and fried my computer. doh! So i can only get on for about 20minutes every other day at school, *sigh* i have 469 new posts to read. Arg! (and don't laugh) Ed P.S but however, i am getting a better computer back than went out

i think it's 60, then 200 to become an Old Hand, although that might be 300, as the only people whom i have checked their profiles had over 300... anyway, time for a lesson :o) Ed

Well i suppose in theory i'm still a s/l student having done 14 jumps, but my 6 months since my last jump is up so i would have to do a FJC again, if i don't get to do AFF this summer, i will do s/l at uni, but i will do AFF /me keeps telling himself that :o) Ed
-
As in get one straight away? Ed
-
Right.... How could anyone from the ol' dz.com ever forget you? Only 12 more weekends to wait, hehe. Ed

Thanx for the info, i didn't read the link IFlyme, because i was at school, but i will when i get home tonight. I like that when doing AFF i'll be able to get used to these things because having been told them here, rather than getting off AFF and having to start learning such things from scratch.. Cheers for the info and the votes of confidence, i think any worries i have are far outweighed by just how much i want to do this course! Ed

Been reading this thread with quite a lot of interest, but i still stick by my original post, and many people seem to follow the same line of thought. The smallest canopy i have jumped was 250, and i weigh about 170lb, so i estimate it must have been.... at least 1.2 wing loading, and yet it's still so much fun! Why risk killing yourself for another few seconds of freefall, when u can pull a bit higher, have a lotta fun with ur canopy, and live to skydive once more? Just my thoughts. Ed

/me apologises for the content, don't read on if you don't wanna know the answer toss is short for tosser, which is another word for w@nker, which over here is not used to describe someone who actually is a w@nker, it's merely a crude insult. Ed

Thanx Stacy, i am probably going to get my own jumpsuit after AFF (i have a little jar in my room marked "savings" ) so this was really useful to me too! Ed
