Tandem Instructor Poll: Instructor Helmets
skydiverton replied to slotperfect's topic in Instructors
Normally don't use helmets. Nothing or sometimes a wrap-head (because of the noise). Students generally do not wear helmets in holland. No requirement and I would not know what insuries will be prevented with it. It is a disadvantage for your students because it is harder to hear wath you are saying under the canopy. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Using your droque to gain stability is a bad habit, Especially when you are jumping a sport rig -
Tandem Instructor Poll: Weight limit on tandems
skydiverton replied to jdfreefly's topic in Instructors
The speed with a solo rig is for all people about the same (belly to earth) and well below the maximum A higher mass will normally result in a higher speed with tandems This increase in speed is what will cause the problem very quickly Kinetic enery: E=0,5*m*v^2 For me personal I will not take over 100kg (I'm 70kg) For me tandemjumping is more a free-lance activity I's not my job. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Using your droque to gain stability is a bad habit, Especially when you are jumping a sport rig -
In Holland we do not have very few to none Cat A & B tandemjumps. Just the recreational jumps. The passenger pays for an exciting experience. A broken leg does not fit in that picture. So the student keeps his/her legs up (needs hands to do that) and I will flare the parachute. Student steering the canopy Ok, but I will land. Even if the student wants to help, I will flare alone. For me it is not a subject open for discussion with the passenger. I'm 70kg, but I do not need assistance to flare with a 100kg passenger (try the french BT80 canopy) ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Using your droque to gain stability is a bad habit, Especially when you are jumping a sport rig

Just straight is and flare. Using surge is not required, because I normally use the french BT80 tandemcanopy. This one is slight elliptical and complete ZP. No flare toggles because you do not need them. The canopy always has enough flare even in a slightly braked approach. I try to stay with the 10second rule Scott Miller told us about in a seminar 1,5year ago in holland If yoy want to make stand-ups no problem ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Using your droque to gain stability is a bad habit, Especially when you are jumping a sport rig

Tandem Instructor Poll: (Intentional) Flips On Exit
skydiverton replied to slotperfect's topic in Instructors
Rear cargo door. Just sit in the door like a student and exit facing the prop ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Using your droque to gain stability is a bad habit, Especially when you are jumping a sport rig -
TI's have ever been taken for a ride?
skydiverton replied to FlyinseivLP2's topic in Tandem Skydiving
Of course I do not plan to burn in. I only state it is a bad habid to use your droque as an easy way to gain stability as some guys do. If you have to do it ok. I see it as some kind of emergency procedure. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Using your droque to gain stability is a bad habit, Especially when you are jumping a sport rig -

TI's have ever been taken for a ride?
skydiverton replied to FlyinseivLP2's topic in Tandem Skydiving
A couple of times a single flip, but I never HAD to wait with my droque more than 5 second. I never used my droque to gain stability, always normal recovery I think it is not a good habid to use your droque to gain stability ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Using your droque to gain stability is a bad habit, Especially when you are jumping a sport rig -
Tandem Instructor Poll: (Intentional) Flips On Exit
skydiverton replied to slotperfect's topic in Instructors
I never do intentional flips. For the students it does not matter but why wold I take extra risk concerning premature openings or sidespins. I normally do posed exit face forward (in a C206) Even in case the passenger does a reversed arc I can exit very easy and throw the droque. After that I will correct the passenger. The shape of the passenger does not matter because I'm stable with the wind blowing against our front. I'm not very large, and that even works with passengers a lot taller than me I also love the booties on my tandemsuit. It gives me so much more control ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Using your droque to gain stability is a bad habit, Especially when you are jumping a sport rig -
They are packed to survive (canopy and jumpers) a tandem terminal (170knt) Thet means these reserves take their time to open after a low speed cutaway. Opening fast at a low speed cutaway would result in a damaged canopy/jumper at tandem-terminal. This is one of the reasons tandems open higher Just to prevent I experienced a couple of tandem cut-aways (vector). The longer opening timesdid not bother me. They were a little quicker than a tandemmain opening ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Using your droque to gain stability is a bad habit, Especially when you are jumping a sport rig

2000FT is absolutely no problem. Just make a hop&pop with your face in the direction of flight. You can even take 3 seconds to be sure you are stable. You already have the projected speed (flying speed) My lowest was 1700ft (freefall) No problem. The only funny thing is most skydivers can do a hop&pop without problems exept when doing Canopy formation and at 2000ft Congratulations with your first emergency-exit. This is where parachutes have been invented for ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Using your droque to gain stability is a bad habit, Especially when you are jumping a sport rig

Old models open hard. Latest models open perfect. Toggle pressure is low. Flare pressure is the same because there are no flare toggle available. Very nice flare.

This rig has all design items also on a sport rig used for freeflying. That does not mean I recommend freeflying with a tandem. No velcro. Rig is not as high. Perfect for smaller people. New BT80 tandemcanopy opens nice softly and has low toggle pressure (no flare lines). Canopy is 100% zepo. Only packing the droque requires some attention because of a fairly stiff pouch. On regular tandemcanopy's Instructors tend to take the low-weight passengers. On the BT please give me a 100kg passenger. This canopy loves wingload (and still flyes and flares perfect with a nice toggle pressure)
