  1. My dad was cutting the grass when he saw something shiny ahead of him, but decided the mower would take care of it. It was a 6 inch piece of metal packing strap. The mower spun it and flung the thing out the back of the mower...directly into his lower leg. It chipped one of the bones and stuck out the other side, right through his calf muscle. He quietly turned off the mower and walked straight to his car...and drove himself to the ER. I was the lucky one who got stuck finishing the lawn AND cleaning all the blood off the floor mat in the car! My brother was a cook at a new burger joint. His boss handed him a big strofoam container and told him to fill it with melted butter. Not thinking about it, my brother put 5 pounds of butter in the container and microwaved it until everything was melted. When lifted it out the microwave the bottom dropped off...it had melted along with the butter. All five pound of butter dumped directly on to his feet. The plastic parts of his shoes melted, and he had 2nd degree burns on both ankle and the tops of both feet.
  2. The article says "Nobody is clear on what has gone wrong", but then mentions the Little Ice Age(LIA), 1300-1850. Unfamiliar with that term, I did a little searching around. Seems like the LIA research is all we need. http://www2.sunysuffolk.edu/mandias/lia/determining_climate_record.html very interesting stuff.
  3. I have back pain all the time...muscle problems, compressed disks and pinched nerves. Sometimes it's just one, sometimes it's all three. The only thing that works for all my issues is Aleve.
  4. I am convinced that socks are the larval stage of coat hangers. I have way fewer socks than i used to, and WAY more hangers than I have ever purchased in my life.
  5. I've been a fat, out of shape POS for most my skydiving career. I am proof that you don't have be in good shape to become a good skydiver. If you are going the gym already, great. But you don't HAVE to start going to prepare for this sport. It's just a skydive, you're not running a triathlon or anything. But that said, you can help yourself. As others the mentioned, balance helps a lot. I will add flexibility as a helpful thing to have. If helps prevent injuries, which is nice. But the act of stretching makes you more in touch with your body is any position. People like swimmers, gymnasts and wrestlers seem to be naturals in skydiving. They all have a keen awareness of what every muscle is doing. Pilates and yoga seem have best combination of balance and flexibility. I also found that swimming, specifically the breast stroke, help me solve one get a good feel for what my feet were doing on a jump. I had a tough time keeping my feet in synch. I was dropping one knee or bending one knee more than the other...sometimes both. That put me in a slight spin all the time. The breast stroke forced me focius on where my feet were at all times. I made a effort to tap them together at the end of each stroke. My legs problems were gone in two weeks! My other useful advice...from my experience. If you are going to the wind tunnel to train, inclined bench press helps a lot. I never noticed it when i made 5 jumps a day at the DZ, but getting in the tunnel for the equivilent of 30 jumps in a day...it was PAINFULLY obvious that I needed more inclined presses in my work out. Best of luck to you...hope I helped.
  6. Turkey is the first food eaten on surface of the moon too.
  7. I can't find any mention of Springsteen being dissed, or of the Senate honoring stars like this. Do you have a link? I'm also interested in seeing the list of previously honor artists. It should make for some intersting reading.
  8. A little history and a few recipes from the Chile society... http://www.chilicookoff.com/FactsFun/..%5CHistory%5CHistory_of_Chili.asp There is absolutely no mention of beans as an acceptable ingredient. But this one, http://www.texascooking.com/features/oct97ravenchili.htm makes a distiction between competition chili and eatin' chili that I thinks works for most people.

    Funny names

My uncle's father-in law is Richard Head...NOBODY calls him Dick! I went college with a Michael Hunt...you guessed it, NOBODY called him Mike.
  10. There were civil rights act was in 1957 and 1964? How old are you...or are you talking about some other law? even before those Acts, blacks were equal under the law. We had racist out there who still hated blacks made it tough to actually be equal. Since not everyone in society agree with equality for blacks, we needed a law to specifically make it illegal to discriminate. http://www.usdoj.gov/kidspage/crt/backgrd.htm is a great explanation of why we needed the Civil Rights Act.
  11. They succeeded in starting the country down the path that led to total nation wide abolishment of slavery. "In fact, based in part on the efforts of these Founders, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts began abolishing slavery in 1780; Connecticut and Rhode Island did so in 1784; Vermont in 1786; New Hampshire in 1792; New York in 1799; and New Jersey did so in 1804. Additionally, the reason that Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Iowa all prohibited slavery was a Congressional act, authored by Constitution signer Rufus King and signed into law by President George Washington..." Free Blacks were accorded equal rights under the law. Slaves were not...and that was because of the slave owners in the south. Until those folks were on board, slavery could not be abolished. According the US governemnt, free blacks had equal right. society didn't accept that right away...hell there are still poeple like the Klan who don't accept it. The intention of writers of the Constitution was that ALL men are equal. i'll get back to you on the women and children thing as soon as i find the appropriate references.
  12. That is not the case. Yes, some of them owned slaves, but the fact is that the people who wrote the constitution wanted to get rid of it. http://www.wallbuilders.com/resources/search/detail.php?ResourceID=10
  13. Good point. If you're convicted once and serve your time, hopefully you've learned your lesson. If you've been convicted more than once, then you apparently did not learn your lesson. We need to do something to stop repeat offenders. I know three different people who have been charged with DUI more than 5 times. I can't beleive they are even allowed to drive any more! I'm not sure a pink plate is the way to go, but at least it's something.
  14. except tsunami warnings. I got in trouble for making a joke about the tsunami warning yesterday.
  15. next thing we'll find out is that all these reports of torture are actually the Army dentists helping the prisoners learn how to use detal floss....which was banned under previous regime.
  16. It is a mineral supplement delivery system, not a weapon. They weren't trying burn anything or blow anything up they were trying to help the people of Iraq build strong bones and teeth. It wasn't the US military it was the Salvation Army that did it. I'm sure we'll find that this device was funded by a grant from the Health and Human Services department. Damn good samaritans!
  17. they didn't teach you about phosphorous in human biology? where did you go school? it is a very important nutrient http://www.wholehealthmd.com/refshelf/substances_view/1,1525,10149,00.html
  18. does anyone have a link to the original report from Italy? Everything I've read so far is reporting about the report...but i'd like to see the actual report that started all this.
  19. I haven't seen anything that claims that. I haven't read all the links yet, is there a specific one that states that? Is it possible that there were unintended civilian targets in the area, of course. But it's not like these soldiers decided to shoot this stuff into a place they knew was filled with civilians. Wwe do our best to minimize collateral damage to civilians, but you can't eliminate it when your enemy has a history of hiding out mosques and residential neighborhoods. You do everything you can, but the press makes you out be as bad as Saddam when it happens. If these guys did use WP in a residential area without making sure the civilians were gone, then they should be punished.
  20. We're not worried...we didn't use chemical nor did we violate the Geneva convention. from that first link..."The substance can cause burning of the flesh but is not illegal and is not classified as a chemical weapon." it's not illegal and it's not classified as a chemical weapon, so the title of this thread is not accurate at all. As was pointed out, WP is banned in Protocol III of the Geneva Convention. It prohibits some things from use against civilians. We did not use it against civilians, it was used against enemy combatants. So even if we did sign Protocol III, we didn't violate it.

I gotta share this with everyone...everyone should be so happy! Dude, you gotta read this book. You'll have to read it for 1 hour a week, every week for 5 years....but it's worth it.
