Never minding the potential for a micro-burst, I think it could have gone either way. So I'll defer to captain's digression. Except for one way. If they had to go around for any reason, they'd have been smack in the heart of that thunderstorm. All in all that was stupid. NickD

I did an online translation of that story and it seems the bike was shipped to Belgium in 1942. The private owner rode it once or twice and then he crashed. So not wanting to ride anymore he stored it in his backyard. When it got in the way of his kids play area he opened an old well and dumped the bike down into it and covered it over. Then the fellow in the photos (who I think is a relative who heard the story) dug it up! Pretty cool! BTW, Nina and I are entered into upcoming Easy Rider Bike Show at the Los Angeles Convention Center in the spectator judging class! It's on the 8th! NickD

You guys in Indiana aren't too far from the New Madrid fault that ripped a series of big ones beginning in 1811. Oddly enough those also began in December . . . NickD

It's the one thing I hated about the military. I interacted with some great people I'll never want to forget, and I interacted with some people that were so F'd-up in the head I'll unfortunately never forget them either. And this was 40 years ago! The only advice I can give you is the following. You know the drill, shit rolls downhill. So just smile and say, "Yes, ma'am, right away, ma'am!" Then go outside and stick a K-bar into one of her tires . . . NickD

Being on Facebook myself now I find myself scrolling my mouse over your photos so the names pop up, LOL! If you open a Facebook account you could post them all full size is an easy to navigate album. And there's a gazillion skydivers on Facebook you'll connect with. And you don't have to make your personal info public if you don't want to. Take a look at my photo albums and see if it might work for you . . . http://www.facebook.com/#!/NickDG1?sk=photos NickD

In a way you're correct in that a Go Pro mounted (flush) on your chest strap is physically no bigger deal than having a radio mounted in the same place. The thing is, it may distract you, and it's simply not an acceptable practice when it comes to student skydivers. And if, god forbid, anything happened to you (whether camera related or not) the Instructor and the DZO that allowed you to wear the camera would be hung out to dry! Note to Instructors: Early on in my teaching career I found a small film camera in a student's jumpsuit pocket during a gear check. I asked, "What's that for?" And the answer was, "So once my parachute opens I can take a few snaps on the way down." Needless to say I semi-frisked all my students after that. Students just don't naturally think it's a big deal. Even when you mention in class to remove everything from their pockets. I even found a bag of weed in one student's pocket right before boarding the plane. It was apparent the student wasn't under the influence but, "Here, hold this," is how the conversation at the manifest window began . . . NickD

70 Degrees and beautiful in Southern California today! So I took Nina for a run in the park. If you're looking at this sipping hot chocolate in front of your fireplace, well, too bad for you! LOL! NickD

Fishing, Cal City - East Style
NickDG replied to ZigZagMarquis's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
On those afternoons when we were winded I used to go down to that park on the East side of town (they actually called it Central Park! LOL) and fished for real. I pulled some decent bass out of the lake there. NickD -
Remote Air-drop Humanitarian Assistance
NickDG replied to FFjumper's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I once jumped into a remote stretch of Baja, California (in Mexico) to help out two stranded surfers. They'd been there for a week already without any provisions or supplies. I jumped in with the food and water the three of us would need until the Mexican Navy effected our rescue. The only hard part was strapping on the 24 cans of beer they requested! NickD -
Wow, I've seen some over the top "I love me walls" in skydiver's homes but never an electronic one . . . NickD

copyrights-infringement all over the place

>>When skydivers/BASE jumpers use their sports as a promotional tool to fleece people of their money it hurts the image of parachuting in general. -
