That sounds fun (Other then the accident part glad everyone is ok), but I was in 85-degree weather scuba, and snorkeling in Cayman Island -

Bro. You are missing the point. I believe as stated before that you should be able to do anything you want as long as it does not effect others. Basically your rights do not end until they infringe on someone else's rights. I would love to walk down the street with a blunt in one hand, and bottle blue lable in the other. What you are missing is what I want does not matter. I agree that i belive that, but i know people that believe it is better for their society to have restrictions. They are afraid they might end up like us. People point of you doesn’t only differ a bit, in some cases they are 180 degrees apart. Here is a great true example for you. I know people Iranian people who are loyal to the Prince of Iran and think him taking back his thrown and becoming King is the best solution for Iran. I think they are insane, I believe we should be like the US no kings. They truly believe in their cause they also truly believe that a King would be better then a democratically elected leader. Crazy concept for us who are used to our way but to them I am the crazy one. I can’t answer a question like that but I will give you a true example that might have the same idea. I went back to Iran at the age of 16 and back at that time I was forced to follow the strict religious law at least out side of our home. I have been arrested, shot at, had guns put to my head, etc. the list goose on and on. Did I like these things no, but I unwillingly was living there so I did the best I could. Respected the laws that could get me in some serious trouble and broke the ones that I felt I could get away with or were worth the risk. Here is where it gets interesting (based on my understanding from the people I interacted with when I was there). There are Iranians who believe that it is great the way it is full Islamic law. There are Iranians who think the way it is is fucked and want to be like the US. But most Iranians want somewhere in between the thought of total Islamic law scars them as much as becoming as “free” as the United States. By all standards I believe the Iranian people are the most progressive people in the Middle East and yet they still would not agree with you or me. Once again because there value system and what they viwe as wrong and right differs from us. I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not." - Kurt Cobain

The same thing that happens here when people brake the law because they do not believe in the law. They get arrested and are punished. Weed, Prostitution, Gay marriage the list can go on and on for the things many believe should be legal but are not. You can’t have total anarchy, and the laws of the land are set on that lands morals, values, and sense of right or wrong. I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not." - Kurt Cobain

There are countless examples of different cultures that view and do things way differently. Obviously to them they are not doing anything wrong most assume that they are doing what they should and following in their ancestors footsteps. That alone puts a huge hole in any set of universal laws. Frankly for anyone to stand up and assume that they are capable of setting the standard for the universe would be extremely arrogant and laughable. I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not." - Kurt Cobain

Even when someone is trying to kill you? I find it amazing that some of you think you are the moral judge and can tell other cultures how to live their lives. Unfortunately I see that a lot in the USA as most have not traveled and if they have never long enough to immersed them selves in another culture. So you assume that what you view as wrong should be viewed wrong by the whole universe. (makes me laugh just saying it can’t stop thinking of ET). Here the thing. What you view as wrong is simply not viewed as wrong by everyone in the “universe” that’s the whole point. There are cultures much older then yours that are just as sure as you are that their way is right. Who are you too make that judgment? Do blame a culture that has been doing things the same way for 2000 years if they laugh you off the planet when you state that your moral code is right and theirs is not? As for your examples it is never just murder, rape, etc. there is always different satiation’s it is not just cut and dry. The best solution is to not judge others and be so sure of your self to ASSUME that your way is right. It is best to live your life and allow others to live theirs the way they choose. When you go to Rome do as the Romans and if you don’t want to then don’t go to Rome. It is that simple. I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not." - Kurt Cobain

I said some rights and wrongs are relative and some are not. As for why it does not apply to cultures the simple answer is no one knows whose culture is right or wrong. You can not say your way is betterm, as different people have different priorities and have a different set of values. I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not." - Kurt Cobain
-
No.... you think YOU get to 'murder' - without due process- whenever you feel a little (or a lot) outrage. I think they should be executed, under law, as a result of a fair trial. regardless of how much outrage I may personally feel at any time during the process Thats another thread bro. Just making the point that one must leave personal beliefs and absolutes aside when discussing other cultures. As most will wholeheartedly think their way is the right way. I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not." - Kurt Cobain

Just to clarify we do not allow anything. To think we wield such power that other nations need too ask permission or that the ones that don’t ask permission will be punished is very arrogant and the essence of what is wrong with our foreign policy. The simple answer is this is not our affair. If you believe that we the USA want to spread freedom to the world then you are dreaming. We want freedom, liberty for our citizens and in the past have supported who ever can make us stronger/safer, and improve our lives. We have sided with countless dictators, and have stopped a few democracies. We do what is best for us it is simply not our responsibility to care for the world even if we do use that excuse so we can get our way. That is the real world. She as a citizen of that country should know the laws, and culture. Our opinion of what we believe is right or wrong simply does not apply. There are tribes in New Guinea that believe the young males should swallow the sperm of the adults to gain their wisdom and power. To us this is child molestation and disgusting however it is their culture and just as you believe in your hearth that your way is right they believe theirs is. That is why affaires based on culture our best left to THAT culture to change or not change. Remember this is from the guy who thinks all violent rapists, and child molesters should be executed. I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not." - Kurt Cobain

yeah, bunch of pussies. One little Nuke dropped on your home, and everyone gets all "Scared" suck it up cupcakes I did not mean it as an Insult; we have had very good lives in this country. Even now we are at war but the average citizen still goes to work, doesn’t have to worry about an enemy tank coming down Maine Street. We simply are not used bombs going off in our homeland. Other countries have become more desensitized to such things simply because it happens more often. I did not mean to call us pussies. We have the best military in the world, and countless acts of heroism that these American men and woman have done. So in no way I meant it as an insult but can sure see how it could be taken that way. Time to edit I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not." - Kurt Cobain

I honestly think if there were a nuclear explosion on US soil; Killing Americans in such numbers that a nuclear bomb would all bets would be off. The fear and anger that would generate would trump 9-11, Katerina, and any thing else that comes to mind. I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not." - Kurt Cobain

The constitution is the foundation of what we are. I believe a true patriot would put all other loyalties aside and have there loyalty to that doctrine. GWB is a person that we elected, No one should blindly support or criticize him, and He is not America but an employee of America. Loyalty to anyone because of his or her job, party affiliation, etc. does not equal patriotism to me. Loyalty to the constitution and the idea of America is patriotism IMHO. Please note: I have only been a US citizen for 2.5 years. I believe I might lack the passion that sometimes gets installed in to many of us when growing up in a patriotic family. I am very curious to see what my fellow Dz.comers will say. I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not." - Kurt Cobain

Looking at our pervious history compared to other countries. We simply have not had many attacks on our homeland. An attack on our homeland generates greater fear in our population then some others as we have not been desensitized to such things. I believe such an attack would cause panic and outrage from the population and would but a lot of pressure for the government to act. I believe most would want the government to hit who ever hit us as hard as we can. I also believe we would not be as sensitive as we are now to collateral damage We tend to kill more then a 1000 people for every 1 American that has been killed, and often the people who we kill are not even responsible for the deaths we are avenging. We also have a lot of people who would justify the action as a quick end, and a good option when compared to a long drawn out war like we are in now. I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not." - Kurt Cobain

Talk about a scary thing that can easily happen. I agree with nerdgirl. It would be a good idea to reduce the nuclear arsenal of Pakistan, but at the same time you must do the same to India. I don’t believe you can get one to agree without the other. As usual if Israel decides to attack yet another country on a preemptive bases then it can go to shit very fast. A strike from them would fuel more extreme views and destroy a chance for diplomacy. Considering Israel Bloody past I fear they would attack, and if they do I would not be surprised or could blame a retaliatory attack. I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not." - Kurt Cobain

I am an advocate of what you describe above. All I was stating is what I think when I hear the word feminist. Unfortunately my personal experience is in agreement with the stereotype. I just have seen a difference between woman who are empowered and independent and ones who consider them selves feminists. Just being a feminist insists that you are part of a group and have a cause. If you’re just a person then you are an individual no need for groups. I also see a lot of hypocrisy with people I have met who consider them self’s feminist. Again this is just my opinion on the word feminist. I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not." - Kurt Cobain

I’ll be part of the dah group, but I’ll explain why. I think there is nothing sexier and better for our society then woman who know what they want and are not afraid to ask for it. I have nothing but respect for strong woman. My SO is strong and speaks her mind and I love it. However I would not consider her a feminist and she would consider her self the anti-feminist. When I hear the word feminist I think of annoying hypocritical fanatic woman who hate everything that has a penis. They’re so illogical that they can not admit fact and their whole life is navigated by their “cause” not any different then religious fanatics. I think maybe I understood the term wrong but often the annoying ones are the ones you hear from. The fanatics always make more noise, and when I hear the term feminist that is what I think. I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not." - Kurt Cobain

i want to meet the person who thought of it first and punch them in the face. What the hell. I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not." - Kurt Cobain

They could, if they meet the deadline for changing it, but then they wouldn't be able to vote for a candidate in their own party. Wow really. That’s insane and I am surprised this has not been exploited in the past. You get 50% of the dems. To vote for the weakest rep. Then you still have 50% left to vote your guy in the primaries. And the general election you can vote for whom you want. Hey anyone want me on their campaign? I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not." - Kurt Cobain
-
Hey can a whole bunch of democrats or vise versa change their party just to vote for the weakest candidate of their competitor in the Primaries? I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not." - Kurt Cobain
-
Wait so you mean if you are registered as an independent you can’t vote for a republican? I did not know that. I always thought you show up with your card and you vote for whom you want to in an anonymous manner. I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not." - Kurt Cobain
