Zeno was a famous mathematician from Elea, a Greek city on the Italian coast. Zeno was well known for posing puzzling paradoxes that seemed impossible to resolve. One of his his most well known paradoxes was that of Achilles and the tortoise. Suppose you have a race between Achilles and a tortoise. Now suppose that Achilles runs 10 times as fast as the tortoise and that the tortoise has a 10 meter head start at the beginning of the race. Zeno argued that in such a situation, it would take Achilles an infinite amount of time to catch the tortoise. His argument went as follows: By the time Achilles runs the 10 meters to the point where the tortoise began, the tortoise will have traveled one meter and will therefore still be one meter ahead of Achilles. Then, by the time Achilles covers a distance ofone meter, the tortoise will have traveled one tenth of a meter and is still ahead of Achilles. After Achilles travels one tenth of a meter, the tortoise will have traveled 1/100th of a meter. Each time Achilles reaches the previous position of the tortoise, the tortoise has reached another position ahead of Achilles. As long as it takes Achilles some amount of time to traverse the distance between the point where he is and the point where the tortoise is, the tortoise will have time to move slightly beyond that point. No matter how long the race goes on, Achilles will have to move through every point where the tortoise has been before he can pass him. Each time Achilles reaches such a point, the tortoise is at another point. Therefore, Achilles will have to pass through an infinite number of points in order to catch up with the tortoise. If it takes him some time to pass through each one of these points, it will take hiim forever to catch up. Can you find the faulty logic in the above argument? Can you do it without google? My current inspiration to solve mathematical problems came from that three door problem, so if you got more, keep 'em coming.

Need math problem where 1 = 2 (won't you please, please help me)
PeteH replied to PeteH's topic in The Bonfire
Of course I understand. A friend of mine wanted to see that problem, but I didn't remember how it went. I solved that in high school (took me about 10 minutes = too long to note that dividing by zero) -

I've seen a math problem that has some calculations and it ends in result where 1=2. Didn't find it with google, so if anyone has it, would you post it. Thanks, Pedro -
Black Sabbath (1998) Listened few songs and left. Ozzy looked and sounded like 100 year old, and the whole band sounded tired.

From that backup site: ".4. Shooting at Buell Elementary School in Michigan. Bowling depicts the juvenile shooter who killed Kayla Rolland as a sympathetic youngster, from a struggling family, who just found a gun in his uncle's house and took it to school. "No one knew why the little boy wanted to shoot the little girl." Fact: The little boy was the class thug, already suspended from school for stabbing another kid with a pencil, and had fought with Kayla the day before. Since the incident, he has stabbed another child with a knife." This thug was six years old, so he must have known what he was doing. Why wasn't he fried after the first incident. Damn hippies!

Simon Singh: Fermat's Last Theorem - Great book if you are interrested in math. Covers lots of mathematical history. David Bodanis: E = mc^2: A Biography of the World's Most Famous Equation - Same as above, but about physics. Tommy Lee, Mick Mars, Vince Neil and Nikki Sixx with Neil Strauss: Mötley Crüe | The Dirt - Confessions Of The World's Most Notorious Rock Band - This could be the best book ever. Even people who've never listened the Crüe love this book. Read and leard how to behave like a rock star Garri Kasparov: World Of Change - Garri Kasparov is good example why kids shouldn't concentrate on one thing. Garri is genius in chess table, but probably very difficult person in real world.

One of the best movies I've seen, but it didn't affect my views on trigger happy americans. This was the best part: Michael Moore: Now wait a minute... The Constitution says you've got the right to bear arms. What do you think 'arms' means? John Nichols: Well it's not like these... [waves his arms] John Nichols: It means we ought to have handguns if we want to. Michael Moore: What about nuclear weapons? Should you be able to have weapons-grade plutonium? John Nichols: [pauses] ... Well I think that oughta be restricted. There are a lotta whackos out there.

I wear it. In Finland it's mandatory sub 500 jumps. For those who don't wear. This is a song by Finnish Ahma, released in Suomi Finland Perkele compilation 2. Ahma - I Wear No Helmet I Wear No Helmet I wear no helmet and if I crash my soul / come down in flames scars inside my skin add to the everlasting diary I've kept See: I fly above thou without a safety net knowing what Icarus did not But I don't need to care 'cause I'm the sun myself Crawl at my feet Now be gone I am what Nietzsche meant But he didn't know me I wear no helmet and if I lose my breath / drown in deep waters worms inside my lungs hold well the air I suck away from you See: it is thy creation, division of the two sets Now either one has got to give The finger points at you 'cause I'm the god myself Low life Low demands I am what Nietzsche meant But he didn't know me I wear no helmet and if I choose mortality / tear my flesh apart liquids from the open veins colour this grey thing you call life See: I drew the map and you just followed turns of thy forefathers Dead end after another 'cause I'm the maze myself © Santeri Pienimäki 1997 http://www.ahmametal.com

Nope. It's just a job I have to do to pay my bills. I work in R&D in information security company. I don't like the job much, but it's easy and money is ok. I don't even have my own PC at home anymore.

You are 30% Pure! (Very interesting.) Here's how the REST of the world breaks down, compared to you: people less pure than you (4%) people like you (0%) people more pure than you (96%)

"Bart: Milhouse, there is no such thing as a soul. It's just something they made up to scare kids, like the bogeyman, or Michael Jackson. Milhouse: But every religion says there's a soul, Bart. Why would they lie? What would they have to gain?" Jesus saves, but Satan scores on the rebound

Susi (wolf in Finnish) - I was talking with a friend about Norwegian black metaller Varg (wolf in Norwegian) Vikernes (currently jailed for murdering Mayhen guitarist Euronymous + some church burnings), whose real first name is Christian. My second name is Kristian and as I don't like christianity (or any other organized religion) I joked that maybe I should change my second name to Susi. After this conversation this friend of mine started to call me Susi and it spreaded quite quickly. Personal favourite, but won't use it in our DZ, 'cos there's a girl with the same nick name. Anti-Kristian - Another friend started this for the reasons mentioned above. Pete - From my first name Petri. Hullu (crazy in Finnish) - I used to do lots of not-so-wise-stunts when I was a kid. Still don't understand I never broke any bones or got stiches (or died). Sepultura (Brazilian metal band) - In high school I had a trench coat with Sepultura painted on back, soon people would call me Sepultura. Years later I had a Sepultura's logo tattooed on my calf. Peluri (gambler in Finnish) - I've always been fascinated by gambling. During high school years couple of friends started this 'cos I spend all my money in gambling. Hevi (Finnish term for heavy in heavy metal) - Metal music has been huge part of my life since I was 9. Väkivalta (Violence in Finnish) - Got in a drunken fight (didn't start it) and broke a glass in some guy's head. It was quite bloody.

how is skydiving not unlike being addicted to crack?
PeteH replied to Newbie's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
quote] To think that adreniline is not a chemical addiction is a mistake. Even though its a chemical our own body produces, it is still very addicting, more then just the mental aspects of it. Chemical drugs work similar way. Dody's own chemicals like dopamine and serotonin do the job, the drug is only used to start the process. -

Kreator is one my all time favourites! But I put Kreator, Sodom, Destruction, Dark Angel, Slayer etc. into thrash metal scene. Actually MTV (atleast in Europe) used to play some good music. I've found lots of great bands from Headbanger's Ball.

I've only read de Sade's Justine. It's quite bizarre too. Push: Did you found the whole book (120 days) online? If so, can you post me a link.

I have 4 tribals, both shoulders, right wrist and right calf. The Sepultura logo is on my right calf.

Actually King Diamond is Danish KD/MF has some good songs, but I don't find any death metal in it. I've also never liked KD's voice so haven't bought any albums. I guess original Norwegian death metal would be early Mayhem, even it's now concidered as black metal. At least Euronymous described them as a death metal band in the 80's interviews. What comes to origins of death metal: Possessed released Seven Churches in 1985. Death (started as Mantas) is usually concidered as the 1st death metal band in history, but their debut Scream Bloody Gore was released as late as 1987 (of course they had demos out years earlier, same time with Possessed). The fact usually forgotten is that Sepultura released Bestial Devastation in 1985, and they are also one of the earliest death metal bands.
