I'd be interested in learning why you find it offensive, its difficult for anyone to speak for ALL - so I'd love to hear your view. Arianna Frances

Good for you. I know how hard pumping constantly can be. My third was only 4 weeks early but her lungs weren't quite ready yet and she stayed in the nicu for about 10 days. I pumped and pumped and pumped. When she was off of the IV they would feed her my milk through the tube that went into her mouth to her stomach. I forgot what they called it. I remember the first time she was able to drink from the bottle. Her father was feeding her with my milk. You are amazing to have kept it up for so long. . awww It actually got better, or I just got used to it. Her suck wasn't 'normal' until she was 6 months old, and by then I didn't have time to re-train her off the bottle and I was used to pumping. I really don't know if I'd know how to dictate my time towards breastfeeding now But I am looking forward to it with the next one (God willing s/he isn't premature again). Arianna Frances

How is that contrary to the claim of children over three shouldn't breast feed? I would suggest you take some time to read and investigate before you make these types of statements. No, I mean this smartass http://www.who.int/gb/ebwha/pdf_files/EB109/eeb10912.pdf And my reply was in reference to this: If you didn't know, most children begin speaking around 1 years of age and can communicate a need to breastfeed (such as pointing at the breast, tugging at moms shirt or making motions to suckle - all of which would easily be noticed by someone in the general vacinity) before 1 year of age. So I don't know how you can up with this arbitrary number: I'd love to see people argue how human milk can not be beneficial for humans outside of infancy. Arianna Frances

I would suggest you take some time to read and investigate before you make these types of statements. http://www.who.int/child-adolescent-health/NUTRITION/complementary.htm The world health orgnization does NOT use 'being able to ask for the tit' as criteria for weaning. Really, thats laughable Arianna Frances

I also think it has to do with the prevelance of formula - I swear, the forumla companies are almost as bad as cigarette companies! When I went home from the hospital after Arianna was born Similac (a formula company) gave us (and all new moms in that hospital) a bag, FULL of powdered formula and premade formula samples. Although I left the samples in the room when we left, I know alot of woman who wouldn't and then one day when the are having a hard time breastfeeding, they try the samples and bingo... they're formula babies. In the 50s and 60s breastfeeding had a more negative view in the medical community than formula - formula was considered better. My grandmothers never nursed they're children and thought it was gross as a result... and I think that train of thought has transcended generations. I've kept up with pumping mostly cause I'm too cheap to buy formula, but also because its best for her... originally did it for the weight loss, but that doesn't seem to be happening anymore Jen Arianna Frances

Agreed! small correction My daughter had an immature suck and never got the hang of breastfeeding but I still pump 6 times a day for her and she's 8 months old... so she's bottle fed, exclusively - and I'm very sad about that. I was really looking forward to feeding a more natural way Arianna Frances

Actually I agree with you... there is no reason humans can't drink human milk beyond infancy - the world health organization actually has guidelines for some 3rd world countries to breastfeed up to pre-teen years because the food supply/water supply is so unpredictable. I"d love to know how it came to be that humans started drinking the milk of another animal (cows) when the rest of the creatures on this planet don't do that... but thats a different discussion than this thread. Does the sight of an adult eating irk you? Do you get grossed out when you see an elderly person eating a hamburger, or a teenager munching on fries? No? Then why would you have any problem seeing a BABY eat? I really don't understand where this phobia of breasts came from - its the mode of transportation for the babies food, why should someone have to hide under a blanket, in a bathroom stall or any other 'private place' in order to feed a baby? I'm sure you don't have issue with a baby that eats solid foods doing so in public, or do you? I can understand not doing a blatant flash show for everyone around - breastfeeding only concerns the mother and the baby, so only the baby needs to see, but to say that someone should have to go somewhere private to do so is insulting to the mother and child. I have to agree... Would you eat your dinner in a bathroom stall? No? Then why the heck would you force your baby to eat in a yucky PUBLIC RESTROOM??! Arianna Frances

breast-feeding moms have laws on their side, most states in the US have laws protecting breastfeeding in public. The airlines should know this and be more worried about lawsuits for violating someones rights than offending someone... I hope they get nailed (in a PR, not $$, way) for this. Arianna Frances

you can really understand the type of commitment it takes to breastfeed if you haven't done it. To say it is the most caring/natural act is very true. Its really easy to put your baby on formula, but the AAP (american academy of pediatrics) and world health organization say that, for the US, breastfeeding is best. It gives the babies antibodies they wouldn't get from formula. Animals drink their moms milk, why is it so taboo for humans to drink their moms milk? Arianna Frances
-
the only reason you say that because breasts are considered so taboo in the US. if mouths were considered the same would you get offended by seeing something talk or eat? she's feeding a baby... I mean really. The airline industry has made it so you can't take bottles of breastmilk or formula on flights without HUGE hassle, the least the airline industry can do is make it easy to breastfeed Arianna Frances
