  1. I imagine a 2 out situation would be a bit safer. With no real forward speed the main would tend deflate similar to a paraglider after the round reserve is deployed and could be gathered in. If the main wasnt gathered in it could make for an interesting ride down.
  2. Even if you are from Aus still take the TSA letter. It is better than nothing and I've used in in trips from the UK to Australia and UK to USA. A good piece of advice I got from the guys here was that if you ckeck it and get asked what it is be straight up about and say its a rig. If questioned about the cypress under no circumstances say it has a small explosive charge in it - say you've heard it fires electronically (you have just heard this from me). Ask for a supervisor if there are any concerns - they normally seen this before so should be cool with it. Finally - your not committing a crime so just keep your cool and be polite. I did this and even though I was stopped just about every xray, the rig went on without any opening etc. I think they can relate to me not wanting the thing out of my sight in case it got tampered with.
  3. Not one post against the ZP. This must be pratically a consensus.
  4. I wonder if that's why they are so expensive - they budget on giving everyone a replacement free of charge.LOL
  5. Because its a computer. When properly used, its more accurate and dependable than a human. LOL I tend to not have so much fate in computers, since both the hardware and the software can/will act up when you least need it.... Computers reliable? Arent these the things that for no reason freeze up and will not work again until they are rebooted. hands up who hasnt seen the "this program has performed an illegal operation" message? ......I dont see no hands
  6. I bought and have learnt to pack on a brand new ZP. Ive only recently started getting it bagged everytime and lately it's started to get easy. Theres plenty of good advice in this thread but at the end of the day you just have to practice. I think the bit of advice that is most useful is that you need to learn how to keep control of the folded canopy with one hand while the other gets it in the bag which is a lot harder to do than it sounds. Good luck
  7. Bill Are you saying that we should actually do 45 degree flare turns and 90degree flat turns at 50ft above the ground before downsizing or practice the technique at altitude so you can do these things? it just seems a bit risky for low no. jumpers to actual do a low turn. cheers
  8. On my only reserve ride, I remember that after pulling silver, I had that weird feeling of having ran out of handles to pull...
  9. I agree with doing some unstable exits. As soon as you realise you can recover from instability almost immediatley you will start relaxing - in the end it becomes hard to keep unstable as your body will want to relax and fly.
  10. I dont know about that - you just told us and we are not impressed. LOL
  11. Where I jump packers only pack tandems and student kit so it's either pack for yourself or dont jump. I learnt to pack on a brand new zp and it took a quite a while to pack for a start.
  12. Is this a troll by a reporter maybe?
  13. Just my .02c worth but I broke my ankle pretty badly paragliding a few years ago and then learnt to skydive about 4 years after i broke it. I've had no problems with landings but appreciate that shit can happen.
  14. You havent entered any info on your profile so it would be hard for anyone to help. If you join up one of the uk clubs and hire their kit for a few jumps you should be able to get some info of one of the local instructors. Also if you go along on a week day they will be far more likely to help.
  15. IMHO for the first 10 jumps the people who engage it thrill seeking activities will most likely win out because they will be able to focus on the dive quicker. (Note that these people are nomally fit anyway but not used to coaching maybe) At the 20 jump mark I'd say the athletic/competitive sport people should start overtaking
  16. had nothing but soft openings on my Sabre 170 loaded 1:1 but it always opens off heading (sometines wildly) and often with closed end cells.
  17. The equation for terminal velocity is v(terminal) = ((2*m*g)/(Cd*roe*A))^(1/2) using SI units ie v(terminal) = velocity in metres/sec m = mass in kilograms g = gravitational acceleration (10m/s/s) Cd = drag cooeficient (which needs to be for SI units) roe = air density in kg/m3 (cubed) A = area in metres squared So saying all that, for a given skyball, if you know its speed for a certain weight, you can calculate the approx speed for any weight by multiplying that speed by the square root of the ratio of new wieght divided by the test weight and this weight can be in pounds, ounces, kilos etc. eg. if the ball falls at 120 mph if it's weight is 10oz then to calculate the velocity for a weight of 20oz V(new weight) = v(10oz) * (new weight/10oz)^(1/2) = 120mph * (20oz/10oz)^(1/2) = 169mph
  18. It would be good if Bush concentrated on internal affairs for a while. He and his administration appear to be pretty unpopular in the Western world let alone every where else so I'd say getting UN support to invade another country is very unlikely to happen. Bear in mind that Koffi Anan considers the invasion of Iraq to be illegal. Had this invasion been undertaken by someone other than the USA and allies, UN sanctions may have been called for.
  19. IMHO, if money is no object then an AFF jump could be the way to go. You will experience freefall from altitude say 10000ft plus as opposed to a progression jump in which you will experience almost no freefall before the canopy opens. Progression is cheaper but AFF should get you qualified faster. This can be useful if time is a constraint. There are lots of threads in this site covering this with input form instructors etc which would be worth a read.
  20. ---------------------------------------------------------- Not packing because you have packed a malfunction seems like a bit of a cop out IMHO. Shouldnt they be retraining?
  21. Cheers for that I can finally play the rm files
  22. If anybody knows the name of the person at Performance Designs who made Zero P even more slippery, I'd like that person's address as well. I also have some compound words for that person. I know how you feel. Packing your new PD main is a breeze until it's time to bag the b'stard and then it's litres of sweat and tears of frustration. I sometimes fell like I need an extra arm to bag the bloody thing!
  23. I was 39 when I finally got my A but I had done a few static line jumps in my 20's.
