So I've been out of skydiving for about 1 1/2 years and I'm looking to get back in to it...problem is, I'm having a lot of trouble packing my relatively new zero-p canopy...as of right now, I cannot close my container because everything is trash bagged in! Going to take a packing class this spring to refresh, but to be honest, I never got good at packing up a zero-p, and despite all the help I get, I can never seem to get it down (pretty much it all falls apart when I lay the canopy down and start folding it up)! I hate relying on packers to make my next jump.. Any solid tips? Thanks -S

any tips for packing it then? I always feel like its hard to find where to put the canopy in it, because it doesn't have a 'definate' shape with the split... thanks!

yeah..I am packing retarded..and am taking a class this weekend! Been a long time off...

Anyone have a tip for packing into those D-bags that have a split down the middle? (hard to explain...it's like a d-bag with a vertical cut down one edge) I cannot get my new zero-p in it to save my life!!!! Maybe I'll just have to get a normal d-bag instead of this one that came with my mirage...

Yeah, and I know for a fact some of the blackhawks around here fly around without listening or communicating on ctaf...imagine trying to see one of those flying at tree top level.... blah! -

yeah, I guess that's right...poor phrasing with violating airspace..more like common sense, I guess. Nonetheless, if I planned my route over a DZ, I'd definately tune in and listen up... -

Using GPS, a pilot is not relieved of his/her responsibility to recon their route and consult the sectionals...there's really no excuse for violating airspace in anything except for an emergency. -S -

I think another reason you're getting such negative responses is because it appears you are assuming that any change/rule that improves safety is bona fide "good". I could walk around all day with my flight helmet on my head and be MUCH safer. If I fell down some stairs or got hit by a car crossing the street, I'd be much better off. However, it simply isn't practical. the chances of something like that happening are not big enough to justify the safety measure. -S -
Is skydive headland still in operation? (Alabama DZ) The website and phone number aren't operational... Was hopeful to find a DZ nearby to Dothan... -thanks! -S

Skydiving & Liability Insurance

Hey everyone - I'm taking a class this semester where I have to write a pretty big position paper to change some sort of issue. I was thinking of writing about how difficult it is for DZ's to get decent insurance policies and how (and why) it should be changed... Anyone know any decent resources/stories I should look at for some basic research? Thanks!! -Sam -
There's a great article in the new issue of the parachutist on the subject. I find it really helps in preventing block-ups/ear problems if I equalize my ears a couple of times on the ride up, once my canopy opens, and once I land - I used to get all blocked up every time I went, but now the problem seems to have subsided.... -A

New England Boogie/100way Schedule 8/24-29

I'm there! Trying to tame my new spectre (damn you, zero-p!!!!!!) in time. Probably going friday/saturday or saturday/sunday. -S -
I got my A in Australia, and they didn't really teach it except for a couple walk throughs of side-packing...definately not enough to know how to do it on my own. Been trying to set up for an evening pack class..that's the problem...haven't had luck!!

Hey - Well..I finally got my new rig. Unfortunatly, I can't pack, so it's a pain every time I go to the DZ. I've tried getting a packing class, but there never seem to be enough people to get one together for the packers. Any advice on learning/convincing someone to help me? I really want to be "independant" so I can jump when I want, not when someone has time to pack my rig. Plus, boogie at pepperell at the end of the month so I really want to have it down by then. -S

Yep, doin the toe taps. They do definately help! I guess it's just something I need to get a feel for. So impatient, tho! I want to be good! haha. I was thinking about why I might've regressed on my solo - during my 2-way dive, I was watching my partner the whole time, and during the solo, I believe I was looking at the scenery (mainly the ground) the whole time, so that probably made my arch kinda crappy.... Well, 90 degree weather on the way, so I'll have a lotta practice, I hope!!!! -Alex

*ahem* Foam. Thanks for all the tips. Well, if it wasn't the sound, I'm pretty sure it was something to do with my ears being exposed and not covered. Not sick or congested or anything! Never happened to me before.. I guess it could have been a fluke, but either way...nice and semi-quiet without having to wear ear plugs is a plus. (the whole CRW thing is a reason I don't want to have to rely on earplugs) Any reason I should tape it on the outside as opposed to the inside? (it just seems like it'd look better inside) -Alex

So... I finally got my own helmet, instead of bumming one off of the DZ - a nice new protec, which I promptly jumped. During the jump, I noticed my ears were hurting a bit, and were slightly blocked by the time I got to the ground - hurt a little the rest of the day. Upon examination of the helmet, I saw that there's no padding over the ears and "vents" - which obviously contributed to the noise. I was thinking about taking some foal and taping it over the ear vents. Has anyone done that and had success? Or other methods? Otherwise, it looks like I'll have to get some ear plugs - damn, that hurt! On a sidenote - has anyone airbrushed/painted these puppies? Plain black is just not my thing. Thanks! -Alex

So, I'm finally starting to jump using my booties on my jumpsuit. (I had been tucking them up inside my jumpsuit after my first experience of spinning uncontrolably with them) Everything seems much more mushy when I'm wearing my booties - tracking I get a dive instead of a flat track), and turning is much less crisp. Are there any exercises during freefall(besides simple experience) that'd help to reign in the booties and make me more leg oriented? I did a 2-way last week and having someone to serve as a relative spot in the sky helped - but once I was alone again during a solo, I seemed to regress. Thanks! -Alex

Curious...did you have a CYPRES? A little lower and it could've been real bad in that case!! -Alex
