  1. So both of them are now facing charges. Good.
  2. Mine's a 403(b), and we seem to have higher limits than that. Could be. There are some differences between 403b's (which my wife has) and 401k's (which I have). And of course, I'm not an accountant.
  3. Just so you know what your theoretical target should be: The maximum allowed contribution for a 401k currently* works out to $1083.33 per month. The maximum allowed contribution for a Roth IRA currently* comes to $250.00 per month. So, you could put away up to $1333.33 per month towards retirement in individual tax-advantaged accounts. Of course, you can put away more than that in regular accounts, or other vehicles like college funds for children, education IRAs, etc. * The limits change over time, but these are correct as of 1/2004.
  4. Since this isn't a gun control thread, I completely agree with PhillyKev. He is right on!
  5. Wow. That was a flashback. Guess what? I still don't think he is doing a good job. I agree with you. So much for national priorities. Maybe if we called it a "Real Reality Show", people would actually pay attention.
  6. It is called the lottery, and statistically, it is a sucker's game. If a "penny stock guy" could do it reliably, he would be retired and sipping umbrella drinks at noon, instead of working for you.
  7. Is your employer matching anything? If not, do the Roth IRA first, then crank up the 401k. Contribute until it hurts, then contribute some more. I think the current limit is $3k for the Roth, and $13k for the 401k.
  8. Damn, Justin, do we have to explain everything to you? Come on. The guy only got shot in the leg. You mean a parking space isn't worth getting shot in Canada? Besides, with bilateral symmetry, we have two legs. That means you can even afford to double-park and get shot twice. Don't you Canadians know anything?
  9. The funniest thing was this comment posted in the thread: Doh! You beat me too it by a minute. But it is so true!
  10. So, the World Famous Tink straggles onto DZ.com. Welcome. Why don't you change your sig line back to the FoF?

Well worth the visit, from my recollection. And if you make a road trip sometime, bring the kids to DC and we'll all go to the museums. Some of the best in the world, and all totally free. What kids don't like the Air & Space Museum and Natural History? You can see planes, rockets, bugs, and a flawless crystal ball bigger than your head. You'd even have a place to stay.
  12. When you say soul do you mean entity soul or Shaft soul? Either. I think.
  13. None of my recent cars have earned names. Boring automobiles like my Ford Probe and Toyota Camry are devoid of the personality required to get a name. Yeah, they get great gas mileage and have good reliability, but they have no soul.
  14. It is a repost. But unlike Ivan, I'm too damned lazy to look up the link. Anyway... 1968 Plymouth Valiant 100 Sport Olive Drab 2 Door Slant 6
  15. Phree, Yeah, I've been to Cardweb. I'll look at the other one. I was just seeing if there was anything out there that could substantially surpass 1% without an annual fee or strings. So far, I'm not seeing any.
  16. I won't use a debit card, because of the security features and protections it lacks. If a credit card gets stolen, I'm not liable for much ($0-$50), no matter how much gets charged. If a debit card gets stolen, they can clean out your your entire account and there is damned little you can do to ever recover the money. The ability to pay with someone else's (cc company's) money first is a key advantage.
  17. It kind of makes you look like you are afraid to have your views face public scrutiny here... No, not at all. If you look back through the hundreds of posts I've written on the matter, you'll see that my views are clearly defined in the public realm of the forum. If you are unfamiliar with them, go read them. I'm certainly not afraid to express my opinion. I am however, weary of explaining simple things over and over to a vocal few closed-minded individuals who are incapable of grasping the concepts. No need to name names and insult them. So, rather than continue in that unproductive, futile and frustrating manner, I decided that I'd take it to private messages on occasion with those people that I might disagree with, but with whom I feel a constructive private conversation can be held. Is that crystal clear?
  18. Funny how you run to the P.M. button when jimbo brings up a very valid point . He did have a valid point. I addressed it with him, hoping to carry on a pleasant conversation by PM. No slight at all to Jimbo. But I figured that he and I could carry on a more civil conversation without interference by some of the aforementioned trolls. Clear?
  19. Had that one. Ended up with the Chase Freedom card when Shell switched to Citibank. So now I get 3% off all brands of gas, instead of 5% just on Shell. Seemed a worthwhile swap, for the flexibility. Basically, I see a 1% cash back as a minimum requirement for a credit card. As long as you pay the balance in full every month, you might as well maximize how much they'll pay you to use their card. We use different cards to separate our spending, as well as earning extra rebates. 1% back on everything 3% back on gas 5% back on toys I used to have the old Amazon.com card, which gave you 2% back on everything, but they changed the deal. I also used to have a Dell card, but that got axed as well. It seems like whenever I find one that I really like, they decide the perks are too generous and go and change them. What can I say, I'm just a credit card perk-shopping whore.
  20. Maybe I just don't go to nice enough places. I've never hit a single place that hasn't taken V/MC. I know of a lot where the reverse is true. But there is enough overlap that I might consider getting the Amex, as I have other cards should it not be accepted. I'm still debating.
  21. And doing a world of good for our impressions of Prepaid Legal in the process.
  22. I looked at a couple of the Citibank cards. While fine, they aren't exceptional in any way. I've steered away from Amex because it is accepted so many fewer places. The tiered rebate structure is also a crapshoot. I don't know how much I'll charge in a given year, so it could end up anywhere from 0.5% worse than a regular card to 2.5% better. And if I have to get another Visa/MC to work in the places the Amex won't, I'll consolidate less purchases on the Amex card and be less likely to get their biggest rebate. Interesting idea, though. You have one of those?
  23. We have the Toys R Us card as our joint credit card. I'm looking for one to use as my own. Since I pay for my skydiving stuff out of non-joint funds, and for things I want to surprise her with, I need my own card. Ah, the complexities of finances in marriage.
  24. So.... One of my credit cards (Chase StockBack) is changing their deal. I'm not fond of the new offer, so I don't know that I'll let them roll me into their new program (Chase PerfectCard). I'm in the market for something new, interesting and better. The requirements: Minimum of 1% back (cash or equivalent, not airline miles) No annual fee No account closing fee Visa/Mastercard only, no Amex or Discover So, what good cards do you all have? I don't care much about the interest rate, or intros, since I won't be carrying a balance. Shouldn't have any problem qualifying, so gold/platinum offers are also fine. Anybody have anything that gives back over 1% on all regular purchases? Where it gives back over 1% on selective things, anybody have a big percentage that isn't on a gasoline-related card? Thanks.
  25. I have not used them personally. (And as a disclaimer, I do work for a law firm. But I'm hardly pimping their services.) There have been some negative stories floating around about Prepaid Legal. And not just from my coworkers. Often, the attorneys that sign into the plan are those that can't do well on their own without it. It provides a financial safety net for them, but gives them the incentive to spend as little time and care on your work as possible. Many states have laws that entitle you to a free copy of your credit report every year. I would question the value and practicality of going over it monthly.
