Let's hear it for Sangiro! (Need tall reply numbers here!)
ripper0289 replied to Dumpster's topic in The Bonfire
Sangiro, you run a hell of a website, I have learned a few things and laughed my ass off over the whole waving to FJC people right before a bounce to scar them for life, so allow me to buy a jump ticket for ya! DZ.commers rule. -
A question for the more experienced jumpers
ripper0289 replied to ripper0289's topic in Gear and Rigging
The next thing I get will probably be an altimeter. I bought a Z1 and love it. I'm definitely gonna wait until I get my A license before I start looking to buy a canopy, I was just looking for some input from everyone. -

I had a few friends in the Navy who made Monkey fists for people to use as keychains or necklaces, since I already have an EAB dust cover (Submarine thing) I want a monkey fist for sentimental reasons, not to mention they look cool. -
A question for the more experienced jumpers
ripper0289 replied to ripper0289's topic in Gear and Rigging
OK, here's the situation. I'm a fairly new skydiver, I'm working my AFF jumps and have six jumps so far. The gear I've been using for my training is a Manta 230, I don't know if it's ZP or F111, I have fairly good canopy control for the number of jumps I have made and my question is this: For a student/novice level jumper like myself, is there a canopy that flares better than others? I'm not looking to buy a canopy yet, I realize that I don't have either the knowledge or the experience to make an informed decision, I'm just looking for some input. I just got my copy of the latest paragear catalog and was looking through it. The only thing I have made a decision on is a monkey fist handle for the pilot chute. Thanks, everyone -
Aff1 ....sucky exit and arch question
ripper0289 replied to hawkflight's topic in Safety and Training
Skydive Pennsylvania is fortunate enough to have both a KingAir 99 and a C182, I've only jumped the Cessna once and loved it, how easy is it to just take a step backwards? I read in one of the other threads about using the Wheel Burble explanation for Cessna's, I still get a chuckle thinking of that. The landing gear thing, though, that was from the Beech. It was my last jump, I was (I don't know the proper term) on the outside of the plane presenting my backside to the wind, facing into the plane, the JM went over the exit on the ground numerous times, swinging my left leg a little for the count, but the little half twist to present my arch to the relative wind was a bit hard for me to visualize on the ground, that's when he told me about the landing gear trick. It didn't work all that well "Floater exit, over rotated, good recovery~clear to level VIII" -
Aff1 ....sucky exit and arch question
ripper0289 replied to hawkflight's topic in Safety and Training
One of my JM's told me to look at the plane and tell him if the landing gear was up or down when I exited. I think I like this idea better. -
I was in that general area during Desert Storm, but that was long before I started jumping, but what I do know about the area is this: I don't recall seeing any real clouds during my stay there. It's pretty hot, but it doesn't feel that bad because the humidity is so low. I don't know if this has changed, but while I was there no one was allowed to wear either shorts or short sleeved shirts, something with either the religion or the culture, I can't remember. The people there were as friendly as can be, and the food was awesome. I don't know if this helps, but that's my two cents.

I bought a full face helmet after my first AFF dive, the JM's wouldn't let me wear it until they felt comfortable with my canopy control.

I'm a bit skeered of earthquakes, I've only ever been in one, in Bradford PA of all places, I think it was something like a 4.something on the Richter scale. I wonder how the pay for nurses is out there? Right know, thinking about the frost and snow building up on my car, finishing my AFF at Perris sounds way too tempting.

I have a Pocket PC, it's a Toshiba, when I was looking up different options, I found that while the pocket pc's have a slight edge in processing speed and memory, there are far more applications for the Palm OS. I like my PPC, but if you're familiar with Palm, I'd say stick with it.

Dayum! When can I move to Cali?

If you don't want to build a custom computer, which can be cheaper than buying retail, buy an Alienware PC, they rock. Also, look into a piece of software called Powerquest Drive Image. I bought that, got my drive set up exactly how I wanted it, and made a complete image of it. Now I can recover from a total meltdown in less than two hours. http://www.alienware.com/

I couldn't think of a bigger bunch of morons for this to happen to. Thanks for bringing a smile to my face, Jimbo.

Hepatitis Outbreaks and Green Onions... (NC, GA, TN, PA)
ripper0289 replied to arlo's topic in The Bonfire
Hepatitis A outbreak: Feds halting scallions from 8 Mexican firms -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is preventing green onions from eight Mexican firms from entering this country after an investigation showed contaminated scallions from those companies made their way to the Beaver County Chi-Chi's restaurant, and restaurants in Georgia and Tennessee, prompting outbreaks of hepatitis A in all three locales. I stand corrected, I was wrong, looks like it was the scallions after all. -
Yeah, let's pattern our healthcare after canada or England, those shining beacons of light in the healthcare world. Granted, our system isn't perfect, but it's a damn site better than any of the other options out there. I work in an ER in a fairly busy hospital and we treat everyone, regardless of their ability to pay, so anyone who wants to say that the poor get left behind can suck it.

Agreed, we live in a beautiful universe, I try to get my telescope out every chance I get. Winter is cold here in the hinterlands of Pennsylvania, so no jumping for a while but there are some great sites to see. APOD has provided me with many wonderful desktop backgrounds.

I did it on my own. The day I showed up at my DZ to do my level one AFF was the first time I had seen a parachute anywhere other than television.

Skydiving Death vs. Alcohol Death.
ripper0289 replied to Kramer's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I am pretty familiar with addiction, both to alcohol and to narcotics, I've done some work on a rehab unit in a hospital I worked at. Death from alcohol usually doesn't come until after you've caused a tremendous amount of pain to everyone close to you, be it from the lying or the stealing or wondering if you're coming home or if you've taken your car off a bridge. Addictions like that cause way more harm than a bad landing ever could. I applaude your decision to stay away from alcohol, it's the best thing you can do with a family history. And yes, I've been down that road, not with alcohol, but with pain killers. Skydiving MAY kill you, true, but alcohol WILL kill the alcoholic, and cause immense and long lasting pain to everyone close to you. -
This creature could have probably reported for duty, had a medical exam, and if her complaints were true, been given a medical excuse to keep her from going to Iraq, but she didn't. She took it upon herself to excuse herself. She made a commitment, she broke it. She should be thrown into a military prison for a few months and then dishonorably discharged. She doesn't deserve to wear the uniform, nor does she deserve any of the benefits members of our Armed Forces recieve.

Couldn't agree more, Vallerina. The talk back section makes me grumble every so often, but once I tear my attention away from it, the other forums have offered some really good advice. I think the only other skydiving site I visit more would be the USPA site to read the online SIM.

None. Don't need to, history books and visits to plenty of foreign countries are the basis for my opinion, and it's just that, an opinion. I love this place.

D'oh! Why couldn't we vote for two choices? I usually do the automatic drip thing on the mornings I work, but if I'm off that day the grinder and French Press come out.

Queer Eye for the Straight Guy-- Best Show Ever?
