  1. Hi Wendy, And, quite often those "career skills" classes lead to person going even further. That was me; I started out to become a draftsman. I was getting nothing but A's & B's when the major instructor [ a retired engineer ] convinced me that I could make it as an engineering major. And, here I am; a retired Mech Engr who had a very nice career. I am a strong supporter of junior colleges; and, advocate them being tuition-free if one keeps up their grades. Jerry Baumchen
  2. Hi Nigel, It is a moral question. I believe in welfare; but, not as a career choice. I also acknowledge that some people simply cannot work. My maternal grandmother was a perfect example. In 1945, when she was 66, her husband died suddenly. She had always been a farmer's wife. The State of Washington gave her a small monthly stipend. This kept her in the house & food, clothing, etc. When she died in 1967, the State of Washington claimed everything that she had; which was really only the house. I was quite happy with all of that. Also, Ronald Reagan wanted anyone on welfare to work. He advocated that they manually sweep the streets. Move the garbage one way one day & move it back the next day; rinse & repeat. I think that the question comes down to how much empathy one has for his fellow man/woman/children. I know that I do not have the solution; but, I do care. Jerry Baumchen
  3. Hi Bill, Yet, we survived. AMAZING!!!!! Jerry Baumchen PS) In 1973, I bought a 1/3 acre just outside of the city limits of Portland to build a house on. The deed [ originated about 1946 ] said that the property could not be sold to any Jews, Native Americans, Blacks, on & on. Damn good thing I am a white male.
  4. Hi dogyks, Why stop at just stupid people? Why not include the n****ers, the kikes, the chinks, etc? I have seen some dumb stuff here, but that one contends for the prize this year. Jerry Baumchen PS) And, just how far down that Stupid Scale would you go? Inquiring minds want to know.
  5. Hi dogyks, When was this? I was stationed in Europe 61-63. The Germans would pay the highest for peanut butter. Far more than the Brits or the French. A lotta guys in the barracks made a decent 2nd income from flogging peanut butter. Jerry Baumchen
  6. Hi Joe, If I wanted to work as a cantaloupe picker; I would have to re-locate down to the El Centro or the Yuma area. Lots of low crops in those areas. I 'think' I am OK; plus, the neighbor kid mows my lawn. I gave him a 25% raise last year. Jerry Baumchen
  7. Hi Joe, IMO anybody who invests anything on what they think Trump will do is a fool. A fool and his money are soon parted. Jerry Baumchen
  8. Hi Joe, I can only hope that this is what you [ and others, including me ] are looking for: The primary challenges shine a fresh light on Democrats’ frustration with their leaders Democrats see growing number of young progressive challengers Locally, I am going to do what I can to get Dan Rayfield [ our newly elected Attorney General ] to take on Wyden the next time around. The D's are just too old & too far behind the curve; think Chuck Schumer as a perfect example. The D's cannot win if they continue to be the party of old people, think Strom Thurmond. Jerry Baumchen
  9. Hi Joe, I was going by this article: Live updates: People gather across Oregon to protest Trump policies - oregonlive.com Yesterday is when I first read about the events. The writer did not include any links about how to find out more info. So, contacted him & he provided this link: Homepage | Indivisible I was at the event here in Beaverton. One speaker said that the event was put on by the Oregon Dem Party. I stayed for about 1/2 of it. Once the politicians got to speaking, and I found out that they were all reading from the same script, I left. At least I'll be in the headcount. While these events make some folks feel good, the real battlefield will be in the voting booths next year. All the signs in the world will not change what happens now that Trump and his GOP have both houses of Congress. IMO the other battlefield will be in our pocketbooks. We will have to put up the money to fund the campaigns to defeat the MAGA folks. Jerry Baumchen PS) Saw this today: MAGA -> Morons Are Governing America - works for me
  10. Hi Joe, Every warrior began at birth. We have to start somewhere. Jerry Baumchen PS) This not ActBlue. PPS) ETA: If I remember correctly, Norm & you started with a single Cessna.

  12. Hi folks, Here is a chance to show how you feel: Volunteer Opportunities, Events, and Petitions Near Me · Hands Off on Mobilize It is this weekend. I'm going to the one in my town. Jerry Baumchen
  13. Hi John, Would you please give Trump back his MagicMarker, that he used to show us about the hurricanes, so that he can fix this chart? Jerry Baumchen
  14. Hi Joe, From back in the day: In early 1964 there was a lot of rumors going around about the ParaCommander. One was that it was going to cost ~$500; you could, at that time, by a Pioneer 28 ft 1.6 Lo-Po canopy for ~$190. Then, in the Spring of '64, Security came out with the Crossbow. This canopy was as close to the ParaCommander as they could make it; Pioneer had the license for the LeMoigne design. The XBO canopy came on the market at $224.50. Later that Summer, Pioneer brought their ParaCommander to the market at $225. Hmmmm, Jerry Baumchen
  15. Hi folks, I am very sure that these UAW workers are still glad that they voted for Trump: carmaker Stellantis has now announced the layoff of 900 people working at its U.S. warehouses. Carmaker Stellantis Announces Hundreds of Layoffs as Trump's Tariffs Hit Economy Jerry Baumchen
