I can tell, but I don't care. I was making a request, for the boobies thread I forgot to start, asking you all not to pose the question, "Are they real?" [I will start it, but I have yet to get home to my own computer. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

You know, a year ago I would've been all over it, though I would've required one of you take the pics. Alas, and hurah! I'm now engaged and this property is spoken for. Go ahead and enjoy, but no "are they real?"s in the boobies threads. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

Ich habe das Studentenleben gern. Ready for it to end though. School is great; it's just too bad classes get in the way. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

Better than one saying "I'm not armed, so please don't beat/mug/rape/murder me. Thank you." Concealed means hidden from sight, not visible to the naked eye. So it'd kind of pointless, don't you think? Besides, Most places passed CCW laws to prevent public concern/panic, so don't assume most people carry concealed because they prefer it. Oh, and just to say thanks, I've finally picked up a signature due to this thread. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

I think it was "If you're gonna do the team, don't DO the team." [like it really makes a difference though] btw, Aggie, thanks, I was wondering what the hell those things were on their chest straps. I sure don't throw dytters around like that. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

My apologies. I misread your post in haste. In this, though, I think if the person in question, being mentally handicapped, can take care of himself, then he can choose to own or not. If he is dependent on the care of another, being a responsible person, I would not place a firearm into his hands. [I don't know how low 60 happens to be] I would not place guns into the hands of a person I called irresponsible. I do not, though, think so highly of myself that I can deem who of all people may possess firearms. I have, and keep, a clear conscience. Everyone else's is their problem. My point was that his post is irrelevant unless he petitions his state to repeal their restrictions on sale. I thought we were on adding this new plan or not, blending in discussion of our stance (sp?) and how it applies to this topic. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

But that's just it. Unless someone stops them, the stronger person DOES win. Homicidals don't care about your moral high ground. The point to gun ownership is that you hold in you the ability to stop them. "Given that some number of people will make their mistakes with cars at the expense of other people's lives, I do not see the point in encouraging this behavior by promoting car ownership." or how about "Given that some number of people will make their mistakes with skydiving at the expense of other people's lives, I do not see the point in encouraging this behavior by promoting skydiving." Now you see my problem with your logic on that one? First, let me say I am a bit insulted if this is your opinion of me. I am not prepared to take a life, unless that life threatens mine or my family. If you think I could kill someone in a cavalier way, you have not been listening to me. You hold your beliefs, and I hold mine. I don't force mine on you, why would you force yours on me? You sir, are no gentleman. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

Or if you'd had a gun maybe he wouldn't have assaulted you. You're missing a point, though. You called his mom a whore, ran over his dog, looked at him cross-eyed, whatever. Whatever caused him to do it, he had criminal intent. And the second he had that, no law in the world would have stopped him. [I think if he would have shot you then he would killed you some other way. A gun is just the tool] The point stands that the more you take responsibility away from people, the more irresponsible they act. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

Right, using your head is the answer. And your head doesn't solve much without the use of one tool or another. But, like the man said, "God created man, Mr. Colt made us equal." JF, do you really have so little faith in humanity as a whole? witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
-
NO! It takes criminal intent. And when you start trying to legislate that, you lose. Taking away the means to commit a crime means putting every one in a cage. Speeding and traffic accidents a problem? Ban cars! Drownings and falls a problem? Ban bathtubs! If it's already illegal, and criminals still do it, another law won't stop them from doing it.
-
You are missing one thing in all your points. It is already against the law for felons to aquire guns of any kind. So, if that law doesn't stop them from getting guns, why would another law do it? This is where the question of outlawing every gun comes in. If there are already laws against it, and they don't work, why would these? But, if your goal is total banning, and there is a register holding the names of all the gun owners [as would be accomplished by this plan] then confiscating the guns is that much easier. Every gun-control group has at one time or another said their final goal s the confiscation of all guns. Period. And as a by-the-by, the FOP is AGAINST ballistic fingerprinting. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

Not his choice. Those contingencies have been taken care of just about everywhere. And I can't think of anyone who would argue that they should. I wouldn't. What about you? Should people with histories of blackouts be allowed to drive? People kill with cars a hell of a lot more than guns. Yet any idiot can get a driving license and it's getting harder and harder to carry a gun. You ever been to a shrink? Maybe you shouldn't be allowed to drive, or own a gun, or skydive even. What about President Lincoln? He was diagnosed with melancholia? Would you have let him own a gun? witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

Hammers aren't the reason nails get hit. A broken roof is [or a thousand other good reasons]. If hammers were outlawed, we see a decline in home upkeep [and some other good things]. Tools do a job. Guns in the hands of law abiding citizens scare the bejeezus out of thugs. And if thugs stay away from somewhere or are afraid to be thugs somewhere, that somewhere gets lower crime. That is one job guns can do. Remove the tools to complete the job, the ability to do the job, and you remove the choice. I'm not saying keeping hammers available keeps everybody's roof in good shape, but it gives them the ability to keep their roof in good shape. Take away the hammer and you take away the best way to keep a roof. Take away a gun, and you take away the best way to keep yourself safe. Guns are a little different than hammers in that if just some people have them, thugs are still scared shitless because they don't know which citizens are packing. A roof isn't as picky. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

Ok, so there are more storks in the city than the country. And there are more babies in the city than in the country. Storks must bring babies. No, they must be an indicator? Is there easy gun ownership in London? If you say yes, I'll cry. All comparisons aside, there are lots of murders and bad acts in London, but no easy access to guns, right? So guns are a tool, not a cause, right? Bad acts happen for many reasons. But they happen for REASONS. Guns are tools, not reasons. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

Really? No restrictions? Minors can buy them? Felons can buy them? Mental incompetents can buy them? They don't do background checks? They don't have 10 day waiting periods for long guns? There isn't a one handgun a month law? There aren't around a thousand applicable statutes covering buying a gun in Virginia? [hint, all the questions have affirmative answers] Wow, so what do YOU call restrictions? witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

Perhaps this is the source of agitation. I and others have been refering to confiscation of entire classes of firearms [e.g.California 1990s.] This does not include taking a single gun from a single person. This reference to "confiscation" is about taking firearms from people who have not committed crimes. They may not even have fired the gun, but it was taken because is was suddenly outlawed. An example of registration preceeding [and leading to] confiscation? bmcd308 provided a few, but I have another in mind. In California, after some terrible incident or other, they passed a law requiring everyone owning a certain type of rifle to register it with the state or face prosecution. The rifle owners were PROMISED up one side and down the other that this would not lead to confiscation. Well, one more terrible incident down the road, California passed a resolution outlawing ownership of said rifles. Every law-abiding citizen who had cooperated and registered? Police came to their houses and demanded the rifles be turned over? Refusal? Led to ATF agent showing up en masse threatening a raid. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

Actually, I get better mileage in my 1988 Blazer than most friends do in their 'normal' cars. It's an S-10, so it's kinda small, [REALLY small compared to these new ones] but big enough that I can cram a fold out loveseat bed cushion in the back and sleep like a king. witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
