skydolphin, i got the same question a month ago when i broke my back. the sheriff walked up to me, i was on the ground, and said "well son, did your parachute open?" so i responded with. "oh sir, it's not that at all, i fell out of those trees over there." then pointed to the treeline 200 feet away from where i was laying. jason blue skies and soft winds

just a note of frustration. i own two crossfires. i have a crossfire 149 that was built in spain (not on the reline list). and i have crossfire2 105. i love them both, and they are the best canopy i have flown. when choosing the second i tried any canopy i could get my hands on. from jedei's to fx's. the crossfire is a solid canopy. mother nature on the other hand may not be as nice. currently i am stuck to the ground due to a broken back. and no, it was not from a crossfire collapse, it was from my reserve collapsing/stalling due to turbulence from a tree line and stiff winds. this past weekend i was watching some landings of friends swooping a pond on the 4th. guess what, i saw a crossbraced canopy (supposed to be the most rigid wing available) collapse on a crosswind swoop. luckily it was over water and there where no injuries. just a splash and a swim. we would have never known it was a collapse vs. pilot error, except i was videoing the landings from the shore. my point is this. there are a lot of crossfires out there. icarus realized there was a problem and announced it, then fixed it. however, anytime anyone has a bad landing on one of these everyone gets worried wondering if it still a good canopy and why would anyone buy one of them. what we really should look at is the weather conditions we are jumping in. a windy day is what took me out for the summer. the winds were 18 gusting to 24. i know better than that to jump in those winds. but i did it anyway, got caught in turbulance behind a treeline and crashed my landing. there was some pilot error in my landing as well, but if it were not for the heavy winds, i believe i would not be wearing this annoying back brace right now. there are so many things we can't control, but we can choose what chances we are willing to take. if you believe that the canopy alone is what will land you softly to the ground, then choose your canopy safely. however, remember that mother nature is far more powerful than you think. blue skies and soft winds jason ps i do not wish any disrespect to anyone who has been or knows someone who has been hurt or worse due to bad landing. i just want everyone to think about some of the other risks contributing to bad landings so we can all try to be safer.

I have been to the Richmond Boogie since I started jumping and every year is amazing! Last year was great, with ParaQuip's wide variety of visiting manufacturers to keep you busy when you are taking a break, they had great discounts where I took advantage of buying a new voodoo! The aircraft line up last year included 2 Super Otters from SDC, Mike Mullins Super King Air, 2 Grand Caravans, and a small heli... the Bell 220 and DC-3 from SDC weren't able to make it. This year the aircraft line up has gotten bigger and better ensuring yet another great year for all those that attend! And don't forget the organizers! In the span of one week I was able to do big ways with Jerry Bird and Billy Weber, learn how to fly a wingsuit with Jari Kosuma and did a little freeflying with Steve 'O' Utter and Orly King! The Richmond Boogie has a very unique atmosphere with many great people there; I just recently broke my back and will be down during the boogie, but am still planning on going as the ground atmosphere is almost as good as the skydiving! Hope to see you there! Look me up, just ask manifest for Yamahonda or Jackie Chan! Blue Skies and Soft Winds... Jason

hello everyone, thank you for your concerns here and through private email. so here goes the whole story. i was doing a two way freefly, all went well, then we broke off at 4500 feet and tracked, i dumped around 3500-3000. my main opened in diving spin. i looked up quickly, couldnt fix, saw lots of blue sky while spinning and got rid of it. my reserve, a 120 dash-m, (exit weight 200, and yes i have already heard if i had a bigger reserve i might not be broken) came out beautifully. i did a practice flare, left turn, right turn. then located a place to land. i was smack dab over some pine trees. wind was coming from the west. if i go west then i cant get back to the dz. so i go to the east of them, turn into the wind and flare. i was about 200 feet from the treeline. when i flared, about 10 feet from the ground, i hit some wierd air and it threw me flat on my back. you know, its amazing what goes through your mind at a time like this. i couldnt breath, was in extreme pain, but i thought better check to see if the fingers and toes work. they did. so then i look into the sky and i see a parachute heading back to the dz. i began to think about snow skiing, when you are hurt on the hill you take your ski poles and put them in an "x". so i spread my legs and arms thinking i would look like an "x" to whoever was flying overhead. this is when i noticed something poking me in my back. so i loosened my chest strap, and rolled to my side. when i did this, my rig fell off of that shoulder, so i thought, "hell if im gonna let those damn paramedics cut this off of me", and like a dumbass i crawled out of the rig moved about 3 feet away from it. while on my knees i looked to the road, which was nearly a mile away, and some some cars parking and people running. i must say i am very fortunate that our dz is so close because they knew instantly something was wrong. next thing i know i have half of the dz hanging out with me in this field. the first emt shows up and asked the magic question "Did you parachute open at all" so i thought i would respond with an equally absurd answer, "Oh, it wasnt that, i fell out of one of those trees over there." everyone laughed, then the sherrif shows up and asked someone the same question. so i said again. "seriously folks, i just fell out of one of those trees." well, i to ride in an ambulance for the first time (beer), and lay in bed for 5 hours WITHOUT any pain medication before they figured out what was wrong. and here it is. i broke my back. i have a fracture of the T7 vertebrae (sp), i have a funky brace that i have to wear for 3 months, which means, i cant jump for three months. i will still be out at the dz every weekend doing other things, maybe teaching some classes, or working in manifest. when i get back i will owe about an entire keg of beer, first reserve,.injury, ambulance, first to use our new first aid kit. and im sure the list goes on. anyway, i am fine, i am in good spirits thanks to all of my friends and family. i am really lucky that i can walk, so im not really worried about not jumping for a few months. thank you fallrate for calling this morning, i got the message. thank you wyatt for the vodka(yeah, he smuggled it into the hospital, but i we didnt drink any yet), thanks roy, randy, leah, tom, barry, ann, scott, eric, my mom and my brother, and anyone else that i may have missed for visiting me. and thanks to jaimie, the dzo and my best friend, for sitting there all night with me. i cant wait to see you all again soon. blue skies, and soft winds jason

jari himself will be training at Richmod "the" Boogie over the labor day week. i did the training with him last year and had a blast. it was an awesome experience. can't wait till i have the money to get a birdsuit myself. jason

i also have a crossfire 149 that was not on any of the mod lists. i have several jumps on various sizes of the crossfire1. i have jumped 149, 129, 119, 109, 99. i have only 12 jumps on my crossfire2 105, but this is my first impressions. the 2 turns quicker, very snappy turns. hard 360 toggle turns are more like a barrel roll than a turn. i could see the nearly the entire landing zone over the top of my canopy. the toggle stroke is also shorter than the 1. great flare, and surf with nice shut down. builds speed very nicely with a slow carve. great on long spots too. when i get more jumps on this canopy, i will write a more in depth review in the gear section. jason

i got my new crossfire 2, and it rocks. its zippy, fast, great flare/surf, and good on long spot. only put about 12 jumps on it this weekend, will give more info as i jump it more. but you should demo one for yourself. jason

rhino, i just got my new crossfire 2 yesterday. i will fly it this weekend, just curious, how is the front risor pressure. it is supposed to be softer. i am loading close to you. i have a 105 loaded a 2:1. safe swoops jason

zen, i think more importantly is how current will you be at the time of the boogie. i only had about 250 jumps when i tried it last year, but 200 of those was from that season. i am not saying you need to be that current, but if you talk to jari he can help you. see you there jason
-
ill be there wed - mon, but i almost live there now. cant wait, great people, great jumps, great planes. learning the birdman suit was awesome, did it last year, and i highly recommend it to everyone with the currency and skill level. see you all there jason

is that one of those things that brings the pilot chute back to the canopy for crew work so that it is not trailing to get snagged?? jaybird
