Erica pretty much hit it on the head....sport jumping outside of Auckland & Motueka is pretty much non existant as all the DZ's are tandem factories. If you have your own gear, definitely bring it as you'll be able to get on loads, but don't expect to do an 8-way RW jump at a tandem factory! July will be the middle of winter here in NZ, so it will be COLD - bring some thermals and gloves....jumping over Taupo/Wanaka/Queenstown on a clear sunny winters day is Awesome! Bear in mind that you'll need a minimum of a B licence to jump at Wanaka or Queenstown due to close proximity to mountains. Reserve repack cycle is 6 months in NZ, so if you have your own rig make sure your reserve is in date and bring your licence/log book. An AAD is compulsory at virtually all DZs. Other than that, get your arse to Mercer near Auckland....we have a Porter & LOTS of sport jumping. Sporties rule the roost up here in Aucks!

Do you oppose same-sex marriage for religious reasons?

Russ is 66% gay. WTF i guess I'll be takin Squeak to a gay bar then

NZ did this a year ago....the air's MUCH cleaner now and your clothes dont pong of smoke when you get home. The lack of smoke suddenly makes hitherto unnoticed smells (anal gasses and body odour) MUCH more noticeable although skydivers probably wont notice this so much since most seem pretty damn good at STINKING THE PLANE OUT on the ride to altitude

I'll ask again, in simpler, easier to understand words for you yanks: Whats wrong with having a civil union? IE like in NZ where a Civil Union has *EXACTLY* the same legal rights as a marriage? Why must you have gay marriage, at all costs? Trying to change the law to allow gay marriage in such a backwards religious place as the US aint gonna happen russ and to Micro, as a gay guy, I can most definitely assure you we are born that way. I didn't wake up and make a decision one morning that "from now on, I'm a homo". -

You may be interested in what happened here in NZ: We've had civil unions on the statute books for almost a year now (in NZ civil unions are open to anyone, gay or straight). The sky didn't fall in, despite the religious right's protestations that this would be the end of society as we know it. During the initial stages of debate/consultation, the NZ govt decided that a Civil union, with the SAME rights and responsibilities of marriage would be the best way forward as they thought that ammending the Marriage Act to allow gays to actually get married, would be too difficult to get through parliament/too unpalatable to the NZ public. What they did instead was introduce the civil union bill and a companion bill which ammended hundreds of other acts of law (everything from tax, immigration, pensions, even defence law) so that wherever the word 'spouse' cropped up, the words 'or civil union partner' were added. This means that a civil union has Exactly the same legal standing as a marriage. I actually think the NZ govt couldn't have done any better - they managed to get the legislation through without it being torpedoed by the religious right, yet still giving us equal rights. For me personally, why would I want to get 'married' anyway? Marriage has too many religious connotations. It saddens me when I hear of all the shit that is going on in the US (ie president planning on a constitution ammendment, against a section of his own people) BUT in the US it almost seems if you're after 'all or nothing' (ie gay marriage, at all costs). Surely a better compromise would be something like a civil union/partnership which gives you legal recognition of your relationship, and doesn't piss off the religious lot as you're not getting 'married'? The Big Brother state is already happening - Prescott plans to use a database of satellite photos of every dwelling in the UK to calculate council tax. Add a small extension, or a new shrubbery and you'll be taxed on it: Story here: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2087-1965307,00.html When you also think about the govts ID card scheme, this DNA database (that will, no doubt over time, cover the whole population), the Police Automatic Number Plate Recognition system that was introduced VERY quietly and future developments such as facial recognition software linked to CCTV cameras, then we will most definitely be living in a big brother society where every move you make could be tracked, monitored, taxed from the day you are born to the day you die. I am soo glad I moved to New Zealand!
