SC - Useful Debate, or Just Lots and Lots of Yelling?
MikeJD replied to MikeJD's topic in Speakers Corner
Thanks, Wendy. I thought there probably would have been, but I couldn't think what search terms might turn them up. One benefit of SC that I forgot, but which (joking aside) is an important one - it keeps all this stuff out of The Bonfire. -
SC - Useful Debate, or Just Lots and Lots of Yelling?
MikeJD replied to MikeJD's topic in Speakers Corner
I seldom browse, and virtually never post, in this forum. As an 'outsider' it seems to me that SC exists mainly for people to let off steam, endlessly recycling a handful of themes across twenty thousand threads, with everybody shouting and nobody listening except for perceived flaws in their opponents' arguments - and certainly not with a view to reconsidering their own. It seems to me that there's plenty of heat, but precious little 'debate' - at least as I understand it. Obviously a good old row can be diverting and cathartic in itself, but I'm curious to know - can anyone cite an example of where they feel they've made a difference in here - or (and this would have more credibility ) where they themselves have been turned around on any given topic? -
Neighbor Who Found Missing Women Gives Great Interview

Had a feeling something like that might happen. It often seems to in these cases even when the 'hero' doesn't have anything particularly shady in his or her past. Build 'em up, knock 'em down. -
I'm reminded of a line from an Everything But The Girl song about a relationship gone sour: 'the ring that cost more than the car'. As for letting yours go over a golf course - I wonder if you got a hole in one?

Obviously, Bowie forgot about the Shatner version.

He wouldn't have to hold it from 13K - he'd just need to deploy at minimum safe altitude, assuming he can still convert his vertical fall into something suitably glide-y. Unfortunately, of course, the squirrel doesn't know that. *** Cardboard boxes. LOTS of them. Yeah. Really, really small ones. Shoeboxes, maybe.

...together with the fact that it's hard to write at the beginning of February about having finished your treatment in April.

New news to me.

Wow. Very impressive and moving, and I'm sure an article like that will help lots of women in the same position. I've no real interest in celebrity culture, but it's great to see people in the public eye setting a good example when so much reality TV in particular seems to celebrate obnoxious behaviour. Even before this I thought of Jolie and Pitt - as far as it's possible to tell these things - as among the most 'normal' of A-list celebs. I was at the wind tunnel when they and their kids made a trip there last year. Although they had the tunnel to themselves (and there were more than enough of them to keep up the rotations!) security was very low-key, there were no cameras, and they happily mingled with the skydivers while they were getting ready to fly.

Sounds like a lot of takes

And of course the slider wouldn't be doing its job if the canopy was fully open with it still stuck up there.

What everyone else said. It's a lovely idea. So did you go ahead with it? And would you care to share which song it is?

Say what?! I've a high tolerance level for unconventional art - but not for gibberish.

What turtle said. When did we get so angry about the small stuff? And the funny thing is, even though everyone has these peeves it's always someone else who's the problem!

...jumping a blue and yellow canopy?

I still have a soft spot for the Travelling movies made by Patrick Passe during the nineties. That's partly because they were released early in my skydiving career - I still remember how exciting and inspiring it was as a newbie to see what was possible at the (then) cutting edge of the sport. Watching them now, it's striking how many of the people featured are no longer with us!

Russians, inflatables, airborne priests, and an AN-2

Bit of a startling transition at 2:28. I was like, wow - those things are surprisingly roomy on the inside! -
The tagline from Naked Gun 2 1/2 made me chuckle: 'If you only see one movie this year... you should get out more often'.

If you're going to have pain that you can't or don't want to control with drugs, you could try teaching yourself meditation techniques. Apparently meditation can make a big difference. It may take a while to get practised at it, but it sounds like you'll have plenty of time on your hands. Good luck with your recovery!

One of my cats used to love being groomed with the vacuum cleaner hose. The noise didn't seem to bother him at all, and it was great to be able to suck the loose hair direct from the animal instead of from the carpet!

Since I first found out what a real view is like, from the door of a jump plane, I've just found airliner windows frustrating - so give me an aisle seat if possible. The only seats I've actively avoided were on the BAe 146 that I used to take between London and Dublin every week. It's a high-wing aircraft and the wing roots took up ceiling space, so the lockers directly below them were only a few inches deep!

Brilliant! Thank God so many criminals aren't blessed with brains... In fact I'm going to propose a new word - 'diminal'. If it catches on, remember who came up with it (even though somebody else probably already has).

Not even released over here for another month - although I guess I could order an imported copy if I was impatient enough. What's that all about, though? I thought (apparently naively) that the days of staged releases in different regions were behind us.

Take-offs can be pretty exciting too, when the wind's well over jump limits and blowing directly across the runway. I went up for a 'pleasure' trip in a little Cessna on one of those days. I can still picture my white knuckles on the back of the pilot's seat.
