I'm surprised no one even mentioned the old cliche that my JM told me during our first static line ground school.....when that question was raised, he said, "FLAP YOUR WINGS". Hasselhoff ended up doing a stand up (upright freefly) and toes pointed down and nailed the ocean in a dive. I think he only lived for a few seconds after that but his body was still intact. Thanks dude! I was meant to read this post. I couldn't have stumbled upon this at a better time. I was torn between which discipline to follow through with, either FF or BF. I'm setting my goal to at least 500 BF jumps before transitioning to FF. Also, getting involved in some big ways too. Awesome! Thanks man for shedding some light on this issue. This happened to me last weekend too and I was also wearing gloves as well. The next time, I made sure I was looking at my handles and grabbed them with a closed within my fist before I released the brakes. It's going to be a force of habit for me from now on. Duh I posted this in the wrong thread..... I don't mean to showboat or anything but I just took Scott Miller's Canopy Control camp in X-Keys and he did me a great good. He helped me in exiting the aircraft safely, avoiding collisions, ensuring good seperation with traffic, alternate flight plans, sweet spot flaring, flying in strong wind conditions, etc. I now know how to handle myself better in a lot of possible bad case scenarios. There were many instances in the past where I may have posed as a threat to other jumpers whether I was under a canopy or freefalling. I was ignorant of this but he opened up my eyes to many mistakes I was making of course. He basically helped me out with my game in more ways than one. I apologize to all those whom I may have given them a good freaking out or caused you to lose a few years off your life. I'm all prepped and safe enough to be around now. everyone here has great advice. However, like someone else posted, it's all up to you grasshopper. Let fear be your motivator, not your jailer. Tony Robbins We all have that fear inside us. I still have fear of canopy collision, not flaring at the right time, landing off, landing downwind, both my main and reserve not opening, etc. You have to trust yourself and your equipment like someone else posted too. Fear is healthy because it makes us alert of the possible dangers we may face. Which is why, dirt dive, and have a flight plan. And keep planning up on the plane ride until it's your turn to exit. Just have fun. Don't beat yourself up for not passing a level or two. Relax. Don't try to rush to do make up jumps when you get consecutively winded out. Keep up a pace that's most comfortable for you. You've got your whole lifetime ahead of you. How many hits of adrenaline can you take?

Congrats and keep up the good work. Don't feel too bad. After AFF two years ago, I charged my jumps, my new rig and missed two rent payments last year. Now, I eat Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches for lunch during the week. It doesn't matter, I get full from eating air every weekend. It's worth my struggles! There are tons of people that have over 5000 jumps here. Multiply that by roughly $20 per jump. That's a down payment on a house!!! Remember, you don't take your money with you when you die. I first met Paul on Safety day in X-keys, NJ. During our 60 minute conversation, he opened up to me as if we had known eachother for years. I remember him telling me about giving up a consulting job for combat training, paying a sh*tload of money for a contracted amount of time to work at X-keys. He said that he loved to teach and since most of his life was spent in the military, he could give up a few months to do what he enjoys doing. Then, we talked about investing in the stock market and how glad he was that the military forced him to start investing his money when he was young. Then, we talked about Love, women and making sacrifices for them. He was telling how his wife was planning on retiring from the Air Force and how excited he was to be spending a lot more time with her and his daughter, how they can concentrate on being a family again and what not. Then, when I asked him where he lived he pointed out his winnebago in the parking lot. I said "sh*t dude! That ain't no cheap winnebago!". He just smiled and we talked about how some winnebagos can go for a million bucks. Every weekend morning, when I was unloading my gear from my trunk, I'd see him coming out of his Winnebago and I'll yell out "must be nice to literally roll out of bed to go to work. Ya still got bed hair, dude! Unlike you, I've gotta drive 110 miles out to come here". And he just smiled. There'd be times I'd be talking to other jumpers and he'd yell out from afar, "don't believe a word this guy's saying!". And we'd just smile and go about our business. After sunset, I'd flag him down and I'd say "not so fast ya bugger, lemme get yer autograph" cuz I needed him to sign off on my logbook. Then, I'd say "don't read the part that says Paul Rafferty says I passed my instructor and tandem rating". hehehehehe and he still signed away without reading. Needless to say, I am so honored to have his signature in my log book. Being trained in lethal combat, he could have easily snapped me like a torn stow band on a d-bag for making those rude comments to him. Instead, we smiled at eachother and laughed at the comments I made. I'm just really p*ssed off that him, of all people had to suffer so much. Why him? He did nothing but good for people. Why couldn't he f*ckin' pass away in his sleep? Why like this?!!!! Paul, you have touched my life in a very positive way. Absolutely. Since I have a consideralbly large main and open higher I will always fall in the top of the stack category. Also, there are areas for swoopers to land and there are areas for students to land. I will keep landing in the students area until I'm comfortable landing in a group. When I said I was following the guy below me, he was about 1000 ft below me. I will never allow myself to go that much below that mark. If it happens I will always keep an eye open for other traffic, that's all. How many hits of adrenaline can you take?

I may have miscommunicated this. I will never follow someone directly. I will follow their final pattern and land in the same direction not so much the same area or vicinity but the same direction. With a 230-240 main I would never even get to be anywhere near you. Especially if I pull at 5500. By the time I open and do my canopy control checks, you'd be on the ground already. However, I do get your point and I would never do such a thing. I would just land in the same wind direction as the canopy below me so I don't collide with another canopy or cause a screw up in everyone else's final pattern. I would never follow someone executing a low turn. That's just dumb. I would definitely avoid that person below and watch out for other traffic above and around me, land safely and hopefully into the wind. However, if the pattern has been set by another jumper, I will have to follow. Not necessarily behind or near them but within his/her setup point. How many hits of adrenaline can you take?
