I got it, too; probably every member of USPA got it. I had to laugh, though; the Army's pretty hard-up if they're sending recruitment material to a 30 year old female AFF student! I think I'm too old to join even if I wanted to! blues -zelda

I suppose 60 seconds might be typical for a man, but for women, it would be pretty disappointing! If you're not married to the idea of doing it in freefall, a tandem might be doable... -zelda

There was a thread about this not long ago; I'm job hunting, too, and wanted some feedback on whether or not to let slip that my favorite thing to do is jump out of airplanes...general consensus was to be honest. I actually put it on my resume under "Interests," in the hopes that I'll weed out the morons right away! blues, zelda

Zennie, you have a point about the US being more restrictive than most other industrialized nations, and we have a hell of a lot more space to restrict than they do. My concern is that GW will take back LOTS of those restrictions. In more normal times, he probably couldn't get away with it, but with the little energy fiasco here in the west, and the supposed economy crisis (which I suspect is 80% self-feeding), people will panic and allow measures that they wouldn't ordinarily allow-- short-term fixes that will screw us in the long run. -zelda

skreamer, I fully expect to be flamed mercilessly for this, but that's ok. GW is all for catering to big businesses, and if that means raping the environment so folks can keep driving their SUVs and keep their houses heated to a cozy 70 degrees Fahrenheit, then so be it. It's easier to drill and drill and drill some more than to make changes in our lifestyles in an effort to preserve what landscape is left; also, there is a whole lot of money to be made in the drilling and chopping and mining, etc.(for a handfull of people, that is). Sadly, the US is about profit, profit, profit-at any cost. Full speed ahead-regardless of the consequences. Yeah, you could say I'm not feeling the capitalist love today...I'm also donning my fire-retardant cover-alls, so flame away... -zelda

That's cool; I wish my parents had reacted that way!

Christ--I'm only half-way there!!

Happy Birthday!! I noticed that the weather was pretty crappy over the weekend and wondered if you'd actually get to jump...did you have to do hop n' pops, or did you actually get some altitude? Looks pretty nice today! -zelda

I've been grounded since November because of a shoulder injury...it generally sucked, but the past 2 weeks or so have been pure torture because we're actually having a lot of spring weather (this time of year in Portland is usually rain, rain, and more rain, followed by rain). To top it off this week at work has been bad and only promises to get a lot worse...a jump would make me a much more pleasant human being to be around...but, no love for me yet... In answer to your question, there is no answer to your question...lots of daydreaming and dirt diving, I guess. -zelda

Yeah, I'd really rather not have to hide it...right now, it's pretty hard to miss--pic of my first jump as computer wallpaper, skydiving screensaver, skydiving pics all over my office...then think about the lying you'd have to do every Monday morning--"So, what did you do this weekend?" I don't want it to cost me a potentially good job, but I'm REALLY opposed to hiding it... Thanks for your responses folks! -zelda

So, I'm about to begin a serious hunt for a new job, and I'm thinking about interview stuff...you know, where they ask you what kinds of non-job-related things you're into, and how do those things make you a better person, blah blah blah. You're probably beginning to guess the dilemma; I can talk about skydiving from now until the end of time, and how it's improved just about every aspect of my life (yes, even work!)--also, it's what I most like to talk about! But, if I let on that I skydive, how much am I risking the whuffo reaction, "Whoa, we can't hire this woman; she'll be dead very soon!" Anybody have any experience/words of wisdom with this? blues... -zelda

I'm not in IT, but I seem to have a soft-spot for geeks even if I am a computer idiot...Hey froggie, you got a light? -z
-
That's great, froggie!! It's pretty exhilerating to get a chance to stretch and find out what you're really capable of, eh? BTW, I don't think I could ever do what you do (EMT); kudos to you, girl!! -zelda

The manager at my dz told us that spotting is becoming a lost art, but they really want us to learn how. GPS is great, but he pointed out that the satellites are periodically reconfigured without warning, and if you're depending on the gps and don't know how to spot, you're going to get hosed when that happens! -zelda

I live in Portland and jump at Skydive Oregon, but if you're moving to California soon, I guess we won't get to meet! -zelda

froggie, I remember when that first occured to me; after my first jump, I went to a big store where they had a one hour photo (I got pics of my first jump, and I wanted them NOW!!). I had to wander around the store for a while until my pictures were developed, and I was so pumped I could hardly see straight...I was watching all the other people in the store, buying groceries, bickering about what kind of soup to get, etc., and I was thinking about how trivial everything seemed. All the things we're afraid of and all the things we hold back just seem so stupid after you've jumped out of an airplane! Nothing like a 9 thousand foot freefall to completely re-arrange your perspective on life, eh? -zelda
-
I've got a serious door demon to fight with; I'm ok once I exit, but the ride to altitude is pretty nerve-wracking, and jumprun is just excruciating...I'd love to figure out how to get over that--does it ever go away? -zelda
-
Hey Randy, are you jumping at SDO this weekend? Be sure to torture and torment me with stories of your first jump after the long layoff; it's been about that long for me, too (maybe you saw my last jump--I landed my reserve behind the tent camp!)...let me know how it goes, and if you come up with any tricks to ward off the panic. My doctor should sign me off to jump again pretty soon, and I'm excited and terrified at the same time!! Good luck, blue skies, can't wait to hear how it goes! -zelda

Anna, I had the same problem with turns on that level...my problem was usually my legs being asymmetrical, which would counteract my turn. Before you initiate a turn, do a toe-tap to make sure your legs aren't off doing their own thing! Happy to hear you're in the sky; I'm jealous! blues, zelda

When I messed up my shoulder, I wasn't going to advertise how it happened, but after a doctor mix up with my HMO, I ended up on the phone with them them trying to clear it up. Anyway, then they wanted to know why I had to see a doctor so soon, then they wanted to know how the injury happened. I didn't think fast enough, and ended up 'fessing up to the truth. The woman at the HMO actually said, "Cool! I wanna do that sometime!" Anyway, they covered it, for which I am extremely grateful, since I had to go to physical therapy 3x a week for several weeks... Lucky, lucky, lucky. Blues, zelda

Hey folks, Not really a skydiving question, but...I got a magazine in the mail yesterday called "Unlimited." Didn't order it, never heard of it, and it looks expensive. It's an adventure sort of thing, definitely geared toward men...covers things like skiing, snowboarding, travel, blah blah blah... Does USPA sell our names to companies for this stuff? That's the only way I can think of that this thing would end up in MY mailbox...just wondering... blues, zelda

I understand; I've been tortured by unseasonably beautiful weather for a couple of weeks or so. But when you consider the alternative... -z
