  1. I have no idea of your skills, but I downsized from a 190 to a 150 (in my case my wallet trumped by smarts, as it was either buy a 170 and miss out on a hell of a deal for the 150 I really wanted or go for the 150). I had about 220 jumps when I did mind you, but just talk to an instructor or S&TA and trust what they say. Billvon's is an excellent guildline. You should be 110% proficient at that on the 190 if you even think about going to the 150. Things will happen much quicker and be much less forgiving. 2. And probably the MOST important once you get out! I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  3. I went to a Math and Science Academy (public residential school that requires admission). From both myself and the many people I know from there, good engineering programs love this type of thing. I go to the University of Illinois which has the 3rd best Aerospace Engineering program in the country (follows MIT and Stanford) and when I had originally applied for my bachelor's I was told that they accepted me on my high school alone, and didn't even look over my recommendations and grades (this was a transfer after two years of high school). Even today when I am applying for jobs over 5 years later, every interviewer brings it up, and sounds impressed by it. As far as scholarships go, I don't think it helps that much. Smaller schools will give him big old scholarships based on it (In my case UM Rolla, Miami (Ohio), Embry Riddle, etc), but the top o' the line schools will care much more about things like grades, SAT/ACT, extracurricular, etc. It will certainly help with getting accepted, but scholarships are a completely different thing. In my less than stellar case, MIT said "sure you can come if you can fork over $60K a year," so I politely declined. All that said, if I were to go back I wouldn't do it over again. There is something to be said for a normal childhood. If he can continue to be involved in the things he likes and just change schools, then that is fine, but if it is going to completely change what he's able to, then I would say it isn't worth it. Although there is a big difference between a magnet high school and a residential high school, and I'm sure I would have liked the magnet option much more. Working hard at any school (especially if already a good one) will get him wherever he wants! I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  4. Actually the CIA had said the Soviet economy would collapse within 5 years in the late 80s. They didn't predict the disolvment of the SU, because no one other than Gorbachev even knew what he would do...hell, he might not have known before hand! 5. Japanese samurai movie /= chinese legendary movie. If you want to talk about Japanese movies, then anything by Kurosawa hands down, Ikiru, Yojimbo; hell watch Hidden Fortress and you'll see just how much Lucas stole for Star Wars. Although Seven Samurai will always have a place in my heart! I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  6. I hardly think he was a punk. He didn't know better. If he bitched after getting an explanation, that that was definitely punkish, but just asking why he wasn't landing where he had thought they would is just curiosity. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  7. Unfortunately it looks like they are the only one which will be putting out products with it within, at least, the next 2.5 years. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  8. Related directly to how it will behave. The canopy will be much less problematic the further back the cut line is. A brake line will only effect steering, while an A line will have the possibility of collapsing the nose under itself. Bs and Cs will be somewhere in between those two, but As are definitely a problem. This is more relevant with a main canopy, as I would personally immediately cut away an A line break if I was above my hard deck. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  9. Definitely the time I did a full altitude hop-n-pop with Gary Peeks stilleto rig. His harness is so awkwardly sized that I was scared to death that the leg straps would just come undone. I spend the majority of that jump with my hands in the V of the risers. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  10. You would be suprised just how populated the servers are with females. My guild is abotu 30% female. I got a 29 gnomish rogue on Earthen Home. We should obviously all get on a server and make a DZ.com guild! I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  11. The tanker deal is supposed to be back in the works, and the reason Boeing is #2 behind Airbus is because Airbus has the EU subsidizing their every move. Airbus says they can do all the future design work on their own, so why won't the EU let them. The US had to take it to the WTO before the EU would even talk about settling. 12. You know what they say about people with nice shoes... I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  13. The problem you run into is that wind tunnel testing is very very expensive and the money has to come from somewhere. There is no money to be gained by determining the aerodynamics of the human body. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  14. The chest strap is loose, but it is threaded. If load were applied to the chest strap, it would hold opening shock. I'll bring this up with my rigger this weekend, because you certainly have me questioning my belief. For reference, the difference between this untightened chest strap and how I tighten it for a RW jump (not too tight to ensure I can arch hard if needed) is approximately 4" of strap. 15. What if skydiving was illegal and BASE was not. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  16. I thread the chest strap before tightening the legstraps, but I don't tighten the chest strap until the first light comes on. I don't need it to be tight in the case of an emergency, and I am much more comfortable with it not. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  17. The phenomenon with helos is completely different than ground effect for aircraft, as hovering lift is not created in the same way that an aircraft, and hence canopies and wingsuits, create lift, but they do experience some aerodynamic effect when near the ground. That said, given the very small wing area of a wingsuit, i.e. high wingloading, the induced drag will be considerably high, so if a flier could make use of the ground effect, then it could have a very large impact on total drag. All that said, I know nothing about wingsuits, just aerodynamics. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  18. Sorry, meant to post in the other thread. I also can't get the color picker to work. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  19. As a non-rigger, I was thinking the same sort of thing as now the cutter and reserve PC are metal-on-metal with only a layer of material (top of the PC) in between. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  20. The back of your rig looks like a KKK guy with a mirage t-shirt on! I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  21. I thought the vector put the cutter under flap one like this SB is dictating, at least the V3s. None the less, do you (riggers in general) believe this will become necessary for wings and icons also? I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  22. I assumed 2 years based on the fact of them being the same for the other FAA tests I have taken, and sure enough: "Airman Knowledge Test Reports are valid for the 24-calendar month period preceding the month you complete the practical test. If the Airman Knowledge Test Report expires before completion of the practical test, you must retake the knowledge test." Page 6 of this. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  23. Horribly out of focus picture on the work webcam, but it is all that I have. The red and black tie-dye looks great! Fortunately the 12/04 manufacturing date slid right under the service bulletin too! I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  24. rrriiiiiiiggggghhhhhhtttttt! Did you see them today? I certainly would agree except for the fact that the Pats are their Achilles' Heel. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
  25. If you want to fly for the US Military, then the Marines is actually your best bet. Most everyone who wants to (and is qualified) is able to. It's harder through the Air Force, which you actually would have a better change joining the Air National Guard, particularly since you sound like you aren't as interested in a fighter position. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
