Swoop cord near incident - check for freedom of movement
larsrulz replied to kallend's topic in Safety and Training
Given two unsuccessful attempts to put left hand to head (probably ~5 seconds) and one tumble to stable belly and pull silver(probably another ~5 seconds), that is 2000'. Given deployment altitude of 2500', that would put someone right at 500'. Seems like a good plan until the jumper forgot one of the first thing he learned in his FJC: Pull, Pull at the proper altitude, pull with stability. Better to pull on your back at 2K' than belly at 500'!!! I'm sure this guy can vouch for that! The first time I used my swoop suit, I was unable to reach up to collapse my slider. I had gloves over the top of the cords, so I learned my lesson then. Sounds like someone needs to help this guy with his swoop cord length! I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF -

Once the school year starts, the Falling Illini Skydiving Club, fallingillini.org, goes skydiving down at Archway Skydiving in Vandalia, IL every weekend. Hit up either of us on that page for a ride. I'm also headed to the convention from Champaign a number of days, so PM me if you need a ride and we can work something out. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF -
Sorry to hear that Dan. You should check out Archway in Vandalia, IL. They do static line progression, so each jump is only $39!!! Even recurrency jumps! We get lots of people from in and around St. Louis. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF

Somebodies closing loop is a bit long I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF

Yeah, they were right around exactly even before the convention. The polls showed the same right after. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF

Had you requested flight following? To me, that's one of the most important things to do. You never know what someone is going to climb or descend into you. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF

0:11:1 11 jumps between saturday and sunday; awesome weather! Did my first "coach" dive last load saturday. Some guy with way more jumps than me needed a currency jump...I guess it helps me with keeping the rating current. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF

QuoteAre there any advantages to jumping an otter vs cessna (182/205)? Any disadvantages?Quote Advantages: It is a lot quicker to altitude, it can hold more, you can crack the door on those super hot days. Disadvantages: It is a lot more expensive for the DZ to run, so in turn you'll be charged a bit more as a jumper. And....ummm...you'll probably be going quicker on jump run. Oh, and you need more people to keep a turbine running than your average 182. Two jumpers can normally get a 182 up....turbines range anywhere from 6-10. As far as I know, they heard about it sometime at the end of last week. Which is when they managed to get the King Air. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF

Starting AFF Training Saturday...

Most importantly stay safe and have fun! Also, stick around the DZ after the jumping stops. The real fun starts when the sun goes down! I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF -
If you do Part 61 (which it sounds like you are) for your training then don't ignore the book/writen aspect of your training while getting in your flight hours. Your instructor may not sit down to go over the writen part every time you fly, so don't forget about it. I choose to do this for my PPL, and it really sucked having to learn everything for the written at once. I'm changing my tactic for my instrumental rating and it's working much better. As a new pilot, Part 61 just means that you aren't learning at an FAA-certified flight school and doing it through a private instructor/FBO. btw...congrats and good luck...maybe one day you'll be flying for us jumpers! That is what he means. When you are docked in a four way, that group floats as the whole has increased drag over the parts. When you release grips, your base fall rate is faster than the four way is falling. If you don't "pop up," then you'll fall low. You need to consciously think before you release each grip to dearch a bit. Eventually this will become second nature. I used to have this same problem of falling out, but now I don't need to think about it, and rarely fall low. Eventually you'll also get to the point that even if you do fall low, you can pop right back up without much loss of altitude. As long as you're having fun, then it doesn't much matter, right?

Standard warning about I'm not an instructor and you should trust your instructors and ask your S&TA if you aren't sure about advise you get, but... Learning what it feels like to collapse a canopy and how best to respond is a very important skill. Once you get your own canopy, you should specifically find where your canopy stalls at. If you ever need to enter deep brakes to sink in between two obstacles, then it is very important to know just how much you can go into brakes. As long as you evenly and slowly go out of a stall while keeping the loading of your leg strapes symmetrical, then there should be no problem. If you asymmetrically load it or quickly come out, you could give yourself a whole bunch of line twists, possibly even a line over. This is the reason that I'm sure you instructor gave you a certain altitude to do all this above, which would correspond to your decision altitude. There is a chance this could necessitate a cut away, so be prepared for that. But learning this now is much better than stalling your canopy at 150' somewhere down the line. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF

I take that to mean it was packed under shade of some sort, where as many grass packings are not. Sunlight is VERY bad for both the Nylon and Silicone coating....no matter how UV or heat resistant they are. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF

I have once noticed after a packjob that my PC wasn't cocked, so I took it out for a cocking (I refuse to cock it while the canopy is bagged). Hard to tell if I would have noticed it before gearup or on the plane. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF -
I would much prefer that to an active volcano. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF

Let me think... :9:0 Did a few smaller ways saturday before the ice picked up. A couple hop'n'pops sunday and the S&TA tried to ego check me, but I don't think it worked. I got a strong urge to fly, but I got no where to fly to. -PF
