Ride to Nationals from Houston (IAH) on Oct 11
migliore replied to migliore's topic in Events & Places to Jump
I am flying into George Bush (IAH) at 9:30am on Sunday, Oct 11 and I need to be at Spaceland ASAP for some warm-up jumps before the competition starts on Monday. If you can offer a ride, I'll cover gas and buy you a beer. Thanks! Shane -
Looking to join a 4way FS team as video at Nationals. All jumps will have 2 video cameras, and team will be provided with an edited DVD and .mp4 of all jumps at the end of the competition. Contact Shane Migliore at (505) 301-4506 or shanemigliore@gmail.com. Shane

I'm heading to Eloy March 27-30 to catch up on some much needed turbine jumps, and I'd like to find out how the bunkhouse is. Is it decent or should I bring a tent and camp out? Shane

It sounds like this thread has additional (very tragic) info: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=2945860;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;;page=unread#unread Shane

Sabre 2 (or any PD) Lemon color? got a pic?
migliore replied to WingFlyer's topic in Gear and Rigging
It's a pretty nice looking color. Here's a pic from this weekend... Shane -
I have lurked Deland Fire and what we agree upon (and it worked well) is to simply start tracking 1000ft before breakoff and track hard all the way until their pull altitude. No 4-way team member wants to try to locate a 5th person before choosing their tracking direction, so you simply remove yourself from the skydive before they have to. Shane

Just to keep this on track and not turn into a discussion of either the benefits/drawbacks of linear editing or a Mac vs. PC debate... Do you use Vegas or FinalCut for linear editing? I know they are great in the non-linear world but I was hoping somebody was in the know as to whether they can be used linearly. Thanks. Shane
-
I agree that a nonlinear edited video can be made to a very high quality standard, but mailing videos/pics is not an option at the places I work. Plus I get some satisfaction when they get to watch the video with their family/friends before they leave. Shane

I have been borrowing the use of a linear editing station for a while (I work occasionally on weekends), and I'm trying to get self sufficient. I have a nice MacBook Pro that I have setup to do pictures and an nice set-top DVD burner. I would really like to keep my entire setup pretty portable, so I'd like to do my editing on the laptop, but I am well aware that nonlinear editing and burning DVDs on a laptop is a killer if you're trying to make 20 min calls. My thought is to connect both the camcorder and the DVD recorder to the laptop and to use a program (maybe FinalCut or AVIDFreeDV) to do linear editing on the laptop. Basically, I just want the laptop to act as the titler, sound board, and monitor so I don't have to deal with the other pieces of hardware (plus connections). I'm positive this is physically possible, but I'm not sure if this software (or other packages) will do what I need. Any thoughts or suggestions? Shane

Starting a few days ago, every time I try to use the locator by entering a city and state, I get: "We're sorry, an error has occured. Please try again later." Any ideas? Shane

I wondered about that too. If the open container was forcing the plane to land, why would a flaps-up situation change the risk an open door posed. As a PIC, do you think it would have been better to take your chances with a higher speed landing on a short runway than risk losing the plane and/or people? Shane
-
First of all, fill out your profile before you are publicly flogged. Now, I'm not a pilot nor do I play one on TV, but from what you have described, there seems to be a problem with some attention to safety going on. 3 crashed planes, nose diving with a full load, flap failure, getting pissed and throwing a fit because the plane has to land to avoid a potentially serious premature reserve. I would feel less than comfortable jumping there. But I've only heard one person's perspective. Shane

It would certainly be a pretty funny looking bra size! Shane

Just took Scott Miller's course.
migliore replied to ntrprnr's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I just finished the basic and advanced courses this week in Deland, and I agree, the classes are well taught and present a large amount of good information. Personally, Scott is a really down-to-earth guy who carried out the basic class even though a last-minute cancellation meant I was the only one registered. I could easily see an instructor canceling a class with only one student, but he went on and taught me one-on-one the whole day. He even let me crash at his house that night! Shane -
Since when can Chuck fly on his belly? Congrats on completing the video. Looks like it was a lot of fun and will give the sport some well-needed positive PR. Shane
-
You are lucky enough to live in central FL, which has some of the best DZ's and best belly flyers in the world, so the ball is definitely in your court. What's you home DZ? Do you have any aspiration for competing? If so, the best thing you can do now is work with a mentor/coach who can help you to develop your basic belly skills. Like any sport, never underestimate to importance of the fundamentals. In this case, control of fall rate, front/back and side/side moves, and center-point turns are crucial. Also, try to find other people with similar goals and jump with them as much as possible because you learn a lot more on each jump if you don't spend the 1st half of it just trying to get in the same airspace as each other! Another suggestion is to compete in the FSL as soon as you're comfortable (and safe) with 3 others. The rookie-level competitions are low-key and lots of fun. Plus, you can usually get free 4-way coaching during the event. Good luck. Shane
-
Dude, it takes 15 min or $5. And after a little break from the sport, do you want another thing on your mind on that first jump back? Shane

Any pictures of yourself while working ???

Here's a few good ones of me doing 4-way and a tandem. Shane -
I just got a Toshiba RD-XS34 which is a DVD recorder with a 160GB HDD. It's really nice to bring in multiple clips, create playlists and the do fast dubbing to DVD (a 5 min video burns to disc in less than one minute). Finalization takes the normal time. Shane

Exactly! Shane

I've got my eye on this one from B&H. Shane
