I was referring to doing a low clear and pull as the old daze (out of a 182 if you can ). As for spotting, I meant that keeping it low makes it easier to spot with less chance of screwing up. I wasn't very clear. It was late over here with bunches of beer thrown it. ____________________________________ I'm back in the USA!!

what was the worst canopy youve ever jumped?
zoobrothertom replied to caspar's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I bought it used in early '84 with about 600 jumps on it and it was probably 3~4 years old. Definitely not F-111. I was envious of my buddy who had an F-111 unit. I want to say 1:1 nylon but I think it was a material between 1:1 and F-111. It was pretty ragged out. Anybody know more about it? ____________________________________ I'm back in the USA!! -
what was the worst canopy youve ever jumped?
zoobrothertom replied to caspar's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
That's reminds me of a good mismatch. My old reliable Fury 220 (#251) needed some grommets replaced on the slider. So, I borrowed a slider that turned out to really slow down the openings. On one jump, I pitch at around 4K to do some CRW with my girlfriend. The damn thing sniveled until about 2.5K. I looked up and saw my girlfriend in a hard spiral following me down. Damn, I was proud of her! .... until she cut away about 100 feet in front of me and on level! Having owned an original Unit 1 (not F-111) for about 100 jumps, I was used to riding a good squared off snivel. By the way, I bought a Nimbus XL for $100 that had around 200 jumps on it years ago. It had a terrible reputation for Mals. 3~4 Mals in 20 jumps with various jumpers convinced me to sell it to another "victim" for a similar price. I swear that canopy had a Mal about every 15~20 jumps until I lost track of who owned it. It was usually the slider grabbing a cascade on the way down. ____________________________________ I'm back in the USA!! -
hey drjump, Damn, you beat me to it! I was gonna say go talk to an old timer. If you watch few loads before you jump, you may not need a WDI. Keep it relatively low on your first jump with a 10 second or so delay. In the alternative, maybe a 3.5 CP. If you're trained and confident on your EPs, a lower exit will be easier to spot. Once you're confident, try a 2K CP just to get the feel of the "Old Daze." ____________________________________ I'm back in the USA!!

Hi Jay, Any luck on getting some kind of feedback column at the bottom of the articles? Brian's recent article is screaming for some direct feedback. Thanks again for your hard work. It's good to see your responses popping up all over the place. It shows you're really involved. Kudos, Tom in Korea ____________________________________ I'm back in the USA!!

Post your evil ways to get even with people.
zoobrothertom replied to CSpenceFLY's topic in The Bonfire
There's an old book called "Don't get mad. Get even." It's about how to fuck with people. Send letters to every service they have saying they are moving and want to shut them off on a certain date. For example: electricity, cable, phone, newspaper, internet service, hold the mail pending a new address, etc. Call various services and explain that "you" won't be home when the guy comes by but to start it anyway as you'll be home before he finishes. Time it for your targets later arrival. For example: Lawn service, pool service, change out the AC compressor, get an estimate on roof replacement, mobile car scratch and dent repair, unplug the main water line, trim the trees, re-sod the front yard .... the list is endless. Sign them up for every magazine subscription that says "Bill me later." Hell, for that matter, sign them up for anything that requires just a post card and "Bill me later." The possibilities are endless. Hell, just read all the internet ads and junk mail you receive. Have Fun!! Of course, always be careful that any communications are from unusual locations that are not traceable back to the you. For example:, visit somewhere busy where you are unknown and ask to use the phone, use the printer at a busy Kinkos not near your house, drop outgoing letters is another company's outside mailbox, etc. ... be creative Insert evil laugh here > _______________ ____________________________________ I'm back in the USA!! -
Some common military ones I heard were. 1. Sending them out for a box of grid squares (1 km squared on a map) 2. Sending them over to the next platoon to get a 105 Howitzer blank adapter Did this one myself in my army aviation unit. Helicopters BTW. Sending the newby around to the various platoons looking to borrow the "skid tube puller" or the "skid tube pump." We would call ahead and ensure that each platoon chewed him out and said "Hell No! You fucks from 3rd platoon ain't ever getting our skid tube puller again!! But try # platoon, they might let you borrow theirs." Some funny shit! ____________________________________ I'm back in the USA!!

Perhaps something along the lines of Belgium. If I recall correctly, if you you do not vote during 4 consecutive national elections, you may be disenfranchised. That'll "get out the vote!" ____________________________________ I'm back in the USA!!

Skydiving Video Set to Van Halen's "Jump"?
zoobrothertom replied to Shotgun's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
LT, Thanks for posting one of my favorite "Jump" videos of the past. My kids are running around and yelling, Jump!" All I need to do now is round up a copy of Wings and all 3 videos of the "Wally" series. ____________________________________ I'm back in the USA!! -
Hi Jay, Thanks for the reply. If I had a choice, feedback directly on the article page might be more effective. Also, it would not clutter up the forums list with another forum. Maybe try one for a while and see how many replies it garners. Thanks again, Tom ____________________________________ I'm back in the USA!!

Skydiving Video Set to Van Halen's "Jump"?
zoobrothertom replied to Shotgun's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
I've checked the video page several times. It's not up yet. How big is the file? www.megaupload.com can distribute files up to 1GB for free. BTW, thanks for making the effort and time! -

Why did you start skydiving?
zoobrothertom replied to Tuna-Salad's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Bingo! ------------------------------------------------------------ Nailed that one! I just didn't know about freefall until a freefall demo during jump school at Ft. Benning. I looked up and said to myself, "That shit's for me!" I voted "Other" but I always stay around for the beer! ____________________________________ I'm back in the USA!! -
Style exits were 6.6 in my day! (at least at Raeford.) If you have time, post a pic of that water bottle with shoulder straps. Sounds like a cool gift. How was PIA overall? ____________________________________ I'm back in the USA!!

After reading Douglas' front page article on the camera he demoed, I had a thought. How about automatically creating a thread in the appropriate forum with a link for discussion at the top/bottom of the article? ____________________________________ I'm back in the USA!!

Chris Bickerdike's Skydiving Artwork

Hi Tony. Thanks for posting! It's great to hear that Chris lives on through your son. 22 years as a zoomie! Did you ever make jump? Take care, Whit Garrison ____________________________________ I'm back in the USA!! -
I'm game. Is it a presidential unit citation? I lived 3 years across the street from Group on smoke bomb hill, '83-'85. Did my first few skydives at Bragg upon arrival with the GB club before realizing I should be with the 82nd club. Silly Newby! ____________________________________ I'm back in the USA!!

Hey Guru, Thanks for the info on the history of "Leg." Your's makes more sense than my thoughts at the time. I thought it was because they "Legged it" and we jumped in. I never wore an Airborne cunt cap. In the early 80's , the 82nd was already wearing maroon berets. I only saw them in old pictures. I volunteered for jump school in basic training. Strangely, after AIT (67Y - Cobra Mech), I was sent to the 9th ID in Washington state. I raised a few eyebrows at the reception center as an E-2 fresh from jump school. Even more during morning PT! I was in a good unit, 214th Combat Avn. Bn. But they were some lame mother fuckers when it came to PT!! About 9 months later, I managed to fanagle a transfer to the 82nd. I started skydivig at Ft. Lewis while in the 9th ID and moving to the 82nd definitely kick started my skydiving career! Airborne!! ____________________________________ I'm back in the USA!!

ufk22 Airborne! I was raised as a newby jumper in the 82nd club. I learned my skills from Golden Knights, Green Berets and regular army guys with thousands of jumps back when 2000 jumps was a true Sky God. Guys who weren't paying for jumps, nor did they expect to be paid. When they spoke, you fucking A listened!! I've paid forward that attitude my whole skydiving 'career.' But, I gotta disagree a little with you on the responsibilities of an I towards 'licensed' jumpers. Maybe it's my old timer's attitude towards freedom. I'll accept a gear check from anybody I know. But, But the sky is about freedom and no one is responsible but you. What you're hinting at invloves more regulation than our sport could maybe tolerate. On the other hand, by involving myself with newby jumpers (like you), I always try to instill some common sense in folks I jump with. How to roll out a tube, do a rodeo dive, how low to smoke a downplane, how low can you go before you should "really" panic! Little shit that politically correct people avoid addressing. Stuff I was taught before PC was the mode. The best solution is what you're already doing. Pay it forward!! Blue skies

That's funny! Looks like a good field expedient method. It just needs some kind of lever like a 2x4! ____________________________________ I'm back in the USA!!

To echo Mark's comment, I've also seen construction on the release housing like that in older TSO'd rigs when I used to spend a lot of time hanging out in the loft. Before reading Mark's post, which brought back the memory, I thought the sewing looked too sturdy to be a fly by night job. Post a shot of the whole rig if you can. ____________________________________ I'm back in the USA!!
