New to skydiving, hello.
zoobrothertom replied to Moonlight_Drive's topic in Introductions and Greets
Yes, AAD is important to me. I'd like to minimize the risk as much as possible. Ha! A professional gambler that wants to minimize his risk! Classic! You're gonna fit in nicely around here ____________________________________ I'm back in the USA!! -

I don't see what difference it makes where the fees are being used. If you stop paying rent you don't get to use the facilities anymore. Umm... That's it? No comment on the questions posed? Just pay to play? ____________________________________ I'm back in the USA!!

Thanks. I'm only going for a two-week visit, so an annual membership seems a little pricey. I'll try giving them a call to see what I can find out. Let me know how that goes. On the other hand if you BASE jump, you'll have a lot more fun and save money! Korea is the home to thousands of mid-rise apartment buildings in the +200' range. Enjoy the trip. Be sure to spend an evening it Itaewon while in Seoul. Just ask anyone how to get there. It's popular. Have fun! ____________________________________ I'm back in the USA!!

A small comfort for English spoken skydivivers
zoobrothertom replied to format's topic in The Bonfire
I am not picking on English language. In many ways I admire it, to say at least. Despite it's poor vocabulary, it's been among richest with phrases. However, as life it self, it is fascinating (as skydiving is when you dig in it) edit: the âccents :) Nice touch with the accents! I thought about for maybe 1 second and decided I had had enough writing for today. While working overseas I purchased an idiom dictionary. It was done as a doctorial candidate's thesis. The lady , now Ph.D., put together the largest idiom dictionary in English with over 10,000 idioms. It was fun to sit down with my local friends and figure out the same idioms locally. It never failed, there was always a similar idiom though often "completely different." ____________________________________ I'm back in the USA!! -
Hi, jclalor. Not picking on you but wanted to explore the phrase below. It looks like Bundy is spitting in the eyes of all the ranchers who pay their grazing fees. Some of the folks commenting may have missed a bit of the history. There were over 50 ranches grazing on this land before it became BLM land. Now there is only one ranch remaining. Did we miss something here.....? Is there a correlation between BLM management and those missing ranchers? Millions in fees to protect a turtle from cattle? 150 years of ranching destroyed how? Heavy handed tactics or a true interest in maintaining harmony? The rancher in question paid for years and then stops? Maybe because the fees collected weren't being used on the land grazed? Other reasons? Just wondering .... ____________________________________ I'm back in the USA!!

Ha! Ha! If you're residing near Seoul in the Northwest, it might be doable. ~$100 annual membership, ~$100 per jump + transportation, food, beer, etc..... When I lived there, 2002-2011, they only jumped every other weekend on Sunday for about 7 month a year. Short story, no jumps for 10 years. It was a 4 hour drive by car. Couldn't be done with public transportation. I was hearing rumors before I left of someone importing an aircraft and another rumor of using on old abandon airbase down south. I don't know what came of it. Run the website through google translate and inquire in English. Since almost every member was trained in California, you'll get a quick answer! Good luck and remember the best beer is OB Lager or OB Red! Don't drink the (S)Hite. :) Soju rocks! Awesome blackouts :) Good luck!! btw in my icon that's me and my son in Korea around 2005 ____________________________________ I'm back in the USA!!

A small comfort for English spoken skydivivers
zoobrothertom replied to format's topic in The Bonfire
Just for fun, here's a short history of English from memory. Please forgive any minor errors as I don't have my notes handy. I spent many years in the Far East (9.5 without a trip home) working and teaching in English. While English is without a doubt the craziest excuse for a language ever conceived, it's logical shortcomings are also its greatest asset! More in a moment. What makes English so crazy? I like to call English a bastard language. We have one mother (the Celts and other native tribes of the island of Great Britain) and many fathers! The Romans from around 50 B.C. ~ 400 A.D. The Germanic tribes like the Anglos, Saxons & Jutes from around 400 A.D. ~ 700+ A.D. The 'Vikings' from ~700 A.D. ~ 1000 A.D. The final group, Norman French from ~1010 to 1310 or so. During the Norman period, what passed for English as a written and spoken language was broadly discouraged and French was the language of court and schooling. This included most, if not all, legal documents as well. The dastardly Norman influence haunted property transfers through at least the 1500's. Anyone who claims to be an English legal historian had better be really proficient at Middle French. The brutal history of English, invasion after invasion, is why it is such a crazy language. We've adopted (or had them forced on us) thousands of words from other languages until our original language was unrecognizable. In many cases, the adopted word keeps some semblance of its original pronunciation. Later words from the same or other sources with similar spellings helps explain words like 'cough' and 'dough. Sometimes two similarly spelled words were adopted from the same language but hundreds of years apart. e.g. "Are you content with the content of the contract with the slowly contracting terms?" Notice how you subconsciously read ahead to correctly pronounce the words? Maybe how you automatically correctly pronounced 'read' in the previous sentence as well? Now, as mentioned above, the logical shortcomings of English are one of its greatest assets. In short, it's my opinion that English by its very nature of mix and add encourages creativity whether consciously or subconsciously. When a culture(s) teaches its children that there is an exception to every rule we tend to think outside the box. Maybe not unique to English, just a little more visible. Whole papers could probably be written on this one! Just my thoughts, don't hit me too hard! ____________________________________ I'm back in the USA!! -

My heat Mojo probably knows yours. I drove over 8 years in the 90's without AC in Houston as well. Stop and go traffic sucked but as long as you were moving it was tolerable. I even drank hot coffee just to add to my misery! ____________________________________ I'm back in the USA!! -
Anybody want to log in and suggest he donate Bill's stuff to the Skydiving Museum? I'm at work and can't remember my darn ebay password! ____________________________________ I'm back in the USA!!

Why we spend money on things like the LHC
zoobrothertom replied to billvon's topic in Speakers Corner
That interaction demonstrates a symmetry that is beautiful in its simplicity, requiring the dogion to also "see" the same illusion from its "point of view". At this point reality re-establishes itself. Scientists call this a 'Hangover.' Symmetry is now broken ...and so are promises that were made during the course of the interaction. ____________________________________ I'm back in the USA!! -

Hey Moderator! Don't you dare move this to the Classifieds. Jim, I'm getting a copy ASAP. Thanks for writing and filling us in. Feel free to 'drop' in anytime! Cheers! ____________________________________ I'm back in the USA!! -
Just replying at random. He claims his family has been using that land since around 1870 without problems. BLM gets created, steals the land from the county and poof! He's the last of 50 odd ranchers that used to use the land that the county used to own. I read something about he used to pay until 1993 when it became clear the BLM was pushing the ranchers off the land. Such fun.... ____________________________________ I'm back in the USA!!

To the OP. Wow! There has been some good information here for you to sort through. My tidbit is something I carried forward to skydiving from Army Jump School. It's a 4 - one thousand count that starts when you release your pilot chute. I repeat it until my main fully opens or I reach cutaway altitude. Altitude is checked at 'four-one thousand' on each cycle. Cheers! ____________________________________ I'm back in the USA!!

No kidding! Just in Europe? I've had it happen in the US a few times, too. Nothing about it printed on the machine. Just guessed and it worked! ____________________________________ I'm back in the USA!!

One further note on using a debit card. I have encountered ATMs that ask for a 6 digit PIN. Don't panic! Just add 00 to the front and it will work fine. ____________________________________ I'm back in the USA!!

The Pigeon Forge tunnel used to fly balloon suits of a sort. I don't know if they're still in business but worth checking into. Good hunting! ____________________________________ I'm back in the USA!!
