If only I had a son... It pales in comparison to what he had to go through to raise me. That's what I got! I grew up shooting my Dad's 10/22, so I figured it was time to get my own. Definitely a blast. I've put about 200 rounds through it today. I'd have put 2000 through it if it wasn't so &%*$%@# cold here in Kansas. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry

So who here bought a gun as a Christmas present for someone? What'd you get? Who was it for? I bought my old man a 12-ga Ruger Red Label O/U shotgun. He's gonna soil himself when he unwraps that bad boy. Beautiful gun. While I was at Wal-Mart ordering the shotgun I picked up a Ruger 10/22 for myself. Plinking is fun!

That's a good argument, but I think it only holds water if the Iraqi's don't believe we want out ASAP. I'm sure many HAVE bought into the propaganda that we are there for the oil and want to stay forever, but I think it is pretty well established that we wanted out as quickly as possible from the very beginning. Perhaps we need to articulate that message better to ensure our success. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry

Ever heard of Rose-Hulman Inst. of Technology?

That's a good point. The professors at schools like Rose are there because they want to teach. Your classes would be taught by the professor, not a teaching assistant. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry -

Heh. I knew who it was before I got halfway through the first sentence of the third paragraph. That guy is hardcore. I don't agree with everything he says, but we need more like him in DC. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry -
Well, I wasn't being serious. I doubt that was really it. Those pseudo-sincere lovey-dovey "you're so wonderful!" congratulatory circle-jerk threads always get a lot of action. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry

Computer Engineering. I don't know if that's an actual separate degree program, but that's what she studying. I don't think she spends much time in Terre Haute. Harvey Mudd is a GREAT school, but its a bitch to get through. BS only. Even though something like 40% (when I went, its like 25% now) of incoming students are National Merit Scholars, and the average SAT score is 1450, 30% of students fail a class while they're there. My class started with 180 students, but only about 120 graduated. Its not for the faint of heart. I barely scraped though, and I thought I was pretty smart. That place thoroughly disabused me of that foolish notion. Mudd screwed themselves on the US News rankings. They used to classified as an "Engineering College", and typically battled with Rose-Hulman for the top spot in that category. For some odd reason they decided they wanted to be called a liberal arts college, even though everyone there majors in either Engineering, Computer Science, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, or Physics. They don't fare as well in that category, but are still in the top 20. Oh, the Engineering major is a little different there. Its a generalized program - you take classes in systems, materials, chemical, mechanical, etc ad nauseum, though you can of course concentrate in a specific field with your electives. As far as I know, its the only accredited 4-year generalized engineering degree in the country. Definitely a unique perspective. Since you got into Rose-Hulman, you should stand a good chance of getting into Mudd. www.hmc.edu Good luck on your college hunt! -
Just remember that next time you're arguing in SC for government provided health care. OK, I'm done hijacking for now. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry

It was my second-choice school, but I decided to go to Harvey Mudd College instead. I thought, Los Angeles area with an all women's college right across the street (Scripps) vs all-male engineering school in Terre Haute. Hmmm... didn't have to think about that one too long. My little sister is going there now and loves it. I don't want to know why. But, definitely a very good school. Terre Haute looked like it sucks, though. I think Indianapolis is only about an hour away. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry -

Anybody notice anything funny about the New York State Certificate of Vote from their presidential electors? http://www.archives.gov/federal_register/electoral_college/2004_certificates/vote_new_york_01.html Hah! I'm sure the Freemason's are somehow involved in this conspiracy. And have you taken a close look at the Zapruder film? I think that's one of Santa's elves behind the fence on the grassy knoll. I mean, look, Santa is an anagram for Satan. Coincidence? I think not. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry

It'd be more useful if there weren't people in the database who simply committed sodomy back in the bad old days when homosexuality was illegal. Apparently, some people are even in there for things as silly as streaking. Article here Not really any evidence or examples to back up the claims in this story, though. I'll see if I can find a better one. --------------------------------------------------------------- There is a fine line between 'hobby' and 'mental illness'. --Dave Barry
