HELP ON CANOPY CONTROL-MY LANDINGS SUCK
skyhighkiy replied to VampireGirl's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
in my professional opinion (look at jump numbers before listening to my opinion on this) I think you're hurting yourself in the long run, by continuing to jump this canopy. (the long run being, when you switch to zp, and the time it takes you to get descent at canopy work) I"m saying this because I have a jumping buddy w/ over 200 jumps, almost all of which were made on an f111 canopy. I see the way he flares as compared to the rest of us that are on zp. and the point in his flare is to slow down way up high, to the point where his vertical speed will be slow enough to prevent injury...as opposed to the rest of us, that flare closer to the ground and fly our canopies even after our vertical speed is nearly zero, touching down softer than stepping down a stair. now, I also got to see him jump a zp canopy last week...as described by him, it was a WHOLE new ball game and he flared waaay too high. It seems like the people I've seen land f111 are really just trying to not injure themselves when they land. [guessing statement] I don't know about the abilities of f111 and getting any kind of surf out of them, but the 3 people I know that jump f111, make pretty much straight in landings, And although this shouldn't be on your mind now, if you get off this canopy at 100 jumps, switch to zp, and decide to start trying swoops at 200, it will probably be like starting to try and swoop at 100 jumps. please, someone correct me. [/guessing statement] anyway, the solution to your biffing problem on f111 (canopy condition aside) is probably to just flare higher, that's what my f111 buddy does. BUt then, this is probly going to throw your judgement off when you switch to ZP PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, before listening to my post, consult with someone that has more experience in these matters, Just trying to throw out more things you might want to ask about. safe landings! -

Hey crotalus. I look at this thread and I see my scenario being played out all over but on a different topic, saying almost the exact same things you're saying. I do have some advice, actually (uh oh, I can feel the tension building

I 2nd that opinion. Crotalus, I've done it many, many times. shopped for a specific answer, that is. don't shop for confirmation of what you want to do, listen with open ears, I finally started doing that and...surprise surprise, they were right

After you get the virus out, get adaware, it should stop you from getting just about any virus, read up on it, you'll figure out why. antivirus software combined w/ adaware and a good fire wall will make you really safe against a lot of the average virus stuff BE THE BUDDHA!

for the sake of throwing this out there, (as it is obvious to you but may not be as obvious to someone w/ little experience, i.e. me ) isn't it also true that you have to have your slider pulled down, or at least be pulling outwards on your risers above the slider for this to do anything? Securing a costume hood to the head/helmet
skyhighkiy replied to skyhighkiy's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Hey, thanksk for the advice, the jester hat isn't a hat, necessarily, it's a hood, that looks like a hat. Jumped it yest'rday, turns out the hood stays on fine over my helmet w/out anything supporting it! Thanks for the ideas, I think I"ll do some of those just for the added security. oh, and b.t.w. the jummp was a ff jump and neptune registered a 120 mph AVERAGE FALLING SPEED!!! BE THE BUDDHA! -

I was going to send this to a PM but figured it would be good for the eyes of the original poster as well. " If you are directly upwind of the target, and the winds at canopy altitude are honking right along, your best bet may be to hang there in the uppers for as long as possible. Bringing the toggles down near the stall point will change the flight dynamics of the cnaopy to what is referred to as "minimum sink" In deep-brake mode, the canopy descends slower than in full flight, as well as losing most of its airspeeed. The central concept this paradigm is that airspeed is not going to get you home, but groundspeed will, hanging in the upper winds likek a hot air balloon, you will use the power of the sky to bring you back to the landing field more effectively than full flight. this is only true when the spot is upwind of the target and the wind is strrong. Full flight mode, with the toggles all the way up, will allow for too much sink rate to utilize the sky's energy like a river to take you home." the parachute and its pilot-Brian Germaine I just figured I'd throw that out to let you know that I haven't come to this conclusion on my own, using my inexperienced and miniscule knowledge. either way, there's no way in hell I'm going in to brakes on a long spot if I'm down wind! That is all, carry on

Buy coach jumps or first canopy?
skyhighkiy replied to windcatcher's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I would agree with you if it wasn't for "Anyways, since winter is coming up" YOu people and your damn sunny conditions and year 'roundn beautiful skies!!! -
*sigh* re-read my post

for the sake of not putting the man out in the middle of nowhere, it should be dually noted that this method does NOT work if you are downwind of the LZ and it isn't necessarily the best choice if you're upwind but there is extremely light winds, or on a long spot on a no-wind day. (this method is meant to make you more like a balloon, using the power of the wind to get you back... now if you lack wind...you be the judge.) srry, I'm done, just wanted to make sure (in the event that he didn't know that) that he's not using that in a down-wind situation carry on

not really that stupid but I remember another friend of mine on one of his first jumps transitioning from a rip cord to throw out. (around jump 15) long story short, he went to pull and heeld on to his pc. the bridal wrapped around the parachute and he freaked out and cut away (releasing PC right before he started emergency procedures) cutaway at approx...4000 or 45 landed the reserve in the peas BE THE BUDDHA!

Buy coach jumps or first canopy?
skyhighkiy replied to windcatcher's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
what jimbo said "There's always a good deal on a canopy. Always" unless you get an absolutely unbelievable deal like...20 bucks for a nearly new canopy.(someone will tell you if it is) in looking for my gear, I remember looking all last winter and thinking "HOLY CRAP!!! this is an unbelievable deal!!!!" so I rushed and hurried and went to try and get it and jusut as I was going to send the money out, "HOLY CRAP!!! THIS IS AN EVEN BETTER DEAL!!!!!!"....and the cycle goes on, and on until finally, someone had near what I wanted and was charging something I could afford, who knew? you have a loooooooong time to look for gear....winter...bleh. actually, this is very similar to something a lot of depressed people go through. It's called "overgeneralization" sort of an all around view to something very specific. for example, they fail to buy the right kind of milk for a recipe andtherefore interpret themselves as an absolutely horrible shopper that can never buy the right thing. This type of person might start thinking "but I failed at this...I feel like I just want to kill myself, but I'd probably fail at that too." it's a vicious cycle. for the most part, however, this cycle is easy to break (one of the less-complex mind-sets to cure as it's quite common) BE THE BUDDHA!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Perhaps the..."we have to learn the hard way" type of people? -
I'm glad you have your view on it, and it's not really him that I"m saying is better off dead, Miss the guy, it's more...the people I believe he would've hurt very soon. I haven't studied the depressive mind quite as intensely as extreme mood disorders (i.e. hypomania, mania, schizophrenia) but I have done a bit in 'extreme depressive disorder' and dissociative things of the like. want to be a physical therapist and my minor is psychology. my comment was not regarding the people that jummp off bridges, although I can see where the mixup would be. my friend also had help, extensive help that did nothing. his pattern of thought jumped between several different psychological disorders, from mania to depression to schizophrenia (not in that exact order) until he began to get violent. with certain people, it would seem as if there is no way to recover the individual. I understand the suicidal mind very well as I have spent the last year and a half studying abnormal psychology and the way the mind works. BE THE BUDDHA!
