I'm currently the owner of one of those awesomely constructed Zak knives. thx for the info. I guess my question, regarding the bridal thing is, has anyone seen someone cut through the bridal material or does N E one know how quickly a hook knife can cut through? BE THE BUDDHA!

hey hey :) I think it's great you're telling him about the things you've been through. I know it encourages him a lot because he was rather discouraged about his...incident... 2 weeks ago and again last week and hopefully he'll be comming along soon because I want to see him continue to be able to jump. as far as giving him actual advice on his landing though...I'd encourage to let his instructor handle that area...this guy is obviously extremely stressed on his landings and his mind goes crazy when he's near the ground. yest'rday's last landing of the day resulted in skid across tarmack and minor damage of rental gear causing the ring system to come ondone upon tension from packing...imagine my surprise when I give the lines a tug and the rings come apart! anywho, Let him know he's not alone in the troubles department of learning, maybe ask an experienced guy to share their learning troubles as well! I know it'll do a load of good and encouragement to let him know. BE THE BUDDHA!

I gotsta gets me a big metal hook knife, Hyuck hyuck. I actually do have a question about this. I've heard of the small plastic hook knifes breaking, what's the chance of getting through a bridal and deploying your reserve before smacking in to the ground if using a double-bladed metal hook knife BE THE BUDDHA!

see B. Germaine pg 66 "bottom end stab" "on most canopies, the pilot is able to recover from a coordinated turn or dive within about two seconds. That is assuming, of course, that there is line tension" BE THE BUDDHA! -
Central michigan skydivers is an awesome family-oriented drop zone. Meaning that once you start jumping there, you become a part of the family. Everyone is professional and fun. Once you walk in, it's easy to find someone to jump with and it will be hard to walk through or by the covered packing area without meeting someone that will become your friend and be ready to jump with you. Manifest does an excellent job of getting everyone in the air.

Make it back or survive the gusts?
skyhighkiy replied to skyhighkiy's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
....see now...I'm kinda curious at to how you could not know what you're getting in to by a basic assessment of what's going on around you, given that you've studied how wind acts around obstacles and what it does to your canopy? the simple answer to the young vs. the old is that the old have been around this long enough, to them it's like "eeh, there'll always be tomarrow" the young guys are hungry for sky, and that clouds are judgement about going up in certain conditions, especially when we are feeling the bite of fall and we know we have less than a month before the D.Z. closes and it's too cold to jump... 6 months in to the winterish hell hole of michigan....put my baby away for a half year...*shudder* BE THE BUDDHA! -

Hey guys, I was gonna take a break from the forums for awhile but I Feel as if this needs to be replied to in order to get blame off of the wrong party, then I'll recess for awhile again. we were told what the ground winds were before we got up off the ground. we were told halfway up what the winds were up high and down low, and we were told right before we got out the door. this was complete err on the part of us, (specifically me for the long spot) and no fault of "lack of knowledge" we knew what we were getting in to when we got in to it....yet we still, stupidly, decided to do it. I wasn't blind-sided by any means, although thank you for the attempt to defend me -

that's something I said to myself the second my feet gently touched the earth, as long as I can help it, I"ll never do that again. as far as landing by obstacles, unfortunately, w/ south winds at my D.Z., the l.z. almost always experiences turbulance and rotors. everyone thhat jumps there ends up getting a lot of practice w/ turbulant winds and learning to compensate, even on light-winded days BE THE BUDDHA! -
What's causing pilot chutes in tow?
skyhighkiy replied to JohnMitchell's topic in Safety and Training
I heard of someone jumping...I believe it was a javeline that had the more square cut flaps. anyway, closed the flaps out of sequence ( left, right rather than right left) and upon deployment, the bridle got caught under the right flap. BE THE BUDDHA! -

hey, thanks for the advice. although my landing area was HUGE (landed on the opposite side of the runway as the normal landing area, had the entire length of the runway) over by the VOR, I hadn't thought of looking for a string of place to land, my mind has always been on finding one place to land if you land off, thanks, your advice might save my life later. -

the 40's were up high, which is why the pilot told us that for our spot. i was told ground was gusting 21 at the time of our jump. B-licensed skydiver, just haven't recieved # in the mail yet (not that this actually matters) pg. 31 of brian germaine's "the canopy and its pilot" "if you are directly upwind of the target, andthe winds at canopy altitude are honking right along, your best bet may be to hang there in the uppers for as long as possible. bringing the toggles down near the stall point will change the flight dynamics of the canopy to what is referred to as "minimum sink". In deep-brake mode, the canopy descends slower than in full flight, as well as losing most of its airspeed. the central concept this paradigm is that airspeed is not going to get you home, but groundspeed will. Hanging in the upper winds like a hot air balloon, you will use the power of the sky to bring you back to the landing field more effectively than full flight" Yes, rears would've worked well too, but brakes worked just fine to get me in to the clear spot I intended to land. no no, I don't mean canopies specifically for me, but do you happen to have suggestions of canopies in general that I would look in to and run through w/ DZ ppl that are airlock 170's? I've been asking around a bit I hear you on the money thing! BE THE BUDDHA! -

Post is also for skymonkey, thanks guys for the responses, you're definately helping me, and I assure you I'm listening. anyway, regarding bumpiness under canopy, the question isn't about how smooth the ride is, it's about the instability of the system in bumpy winds, when the brakes are on. You, personally, what would you do if you did the accuracy trick and saw you could make it in, fairly easily, but only when you were in full brakes and drifting w/ the wind at your back? yet the wind was jerking you around and you risked collapse of the system? Hey Jim, I think I have a pretty good idea of who this is :) anyway, I do want to pick up a new canopy over the winter (Mine's getting a wee tired) and am looking along the lines of something airlocked, a 170 again and semi-elliptical, got suggestions? hey, is there a chance you can get rid of part of your first post? wanna see if I can provoke sharing response rather than backlashing, I changed my original post edit to above: I was talking about getting rid of the part quoting my original post. I do, however, think it's interesting that you posted what you would do in that situation, then deleted it right away. although it was a bad choice on my part, I'm sure there are times when you might find yourself in need of this advice and I wanted more opinions on it...that is what this board is for isn't it? "I should've stayed on the ground" isn't going to help me once I've left the plane you're right, I am changed my post so I can hear what I want to hear. and what I want to hear is something informative, such as what Rob just gave (thanks Rob!) just because I don't talk about what a dumb shyit I am for making a decision like that, doesn't mean I dont know it was stupid. I'd rather learn from it (i.e. staying on the ground next time, and learning about how to cope w/ that situation, should it happen again) than beat myself up over it. so lets be done w/ this newbie thrashing a newbie and get to the chewy, tootsie roll center of skydiving BE THE BUDDHA! -

Make it back or survive the gusts?
skyhighkiy replied to skyhighkiy's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
So I found myself in an interesting situation yesterrday. Long west spot, we were told winds were west, turns out they were south, sometimes southwest. didn't have that extre tail wind to push us easily back Under extremely high and turbulant wind conditions, My course of action was to try and crab w/ the wind in half, sometimes full brakes to drift with the wind and then let them up to try and cut through and stop the bumping. IN this situation, where you're getting a lot of bumpy turbulance from gusts, would one go in to brakes to try and get back? or would you fly at full flight (to keep the internal pressure of the canopy up in the turbulence) and just look for a dif. landing area? edited to provoke sharing kind of answers rather than backlashing BE THE BUDDHA! -
RSL or No RSL? (Detached From: Wings Container Question)
skyhighkiy replied to skyhighkiy's topic in Gear and Rigging
I totally agree with you, i am in no position to give safety advice, that's why I didn't say "you don't need an RSL" and why my post began with "just throwing something out there" and finished with "I'm just throwing some thoughts out there, take what you will and leave what you will" nor was I really saying to buy or not to buy the rig, I was merely giving something else to think about by giving information discussed by experienced and inexperienced skydivers alike, around my d.z I may be new, I may be in no position to give advice, but I think it's a very good idea to share possibilities of what could happen with different equipment. whcih is why I gave pros and cons to both. the pillow is something I wasn't going to comment on, because I'm not qualified to give "shoulds and should nots"...maybe could and could nots? does me being a newb discredit good info that should be considered, if typed by me? and to knock down the internet communication barrier, this is not an angry reply -
RSL or No RSL? (Detached From: Wings Container Question)
skyhighkiy replied to skyhighkiy's topic in Gear and Rigging
I'm sorry I don't really have a price for wings cause I don't jump one! :) but anyway, my comment is on the RSL. Just throwing something in there cause this has been an ongoing debate in my D.Z. I won't wear an RSL because in the event of a spinning malfunction, there's no time to get stable, with this, you're almost guaranteed line twists on your reserve (who knows what this will bring) and if there happens to be a canopy collision, I can't cut away w/out my reserve deploying right away. Many people I know wear them because there's really no chance of msising pulling your reserve because it's already comming out when you cut away, it's faster (or usually faster) than pulling both handles and if they are spinning tothe point they can't control themselves, adn they happen to get one hand in, allt hey need to pull is one handle. I'm just throwing some thoughts out there, take what you will and leave what you will, blues! :) BE THE BUDDHA! -
so I heard they're going to have coach training in Eloy in Mayish? sometime, anyway, I was wondering if anyone knows how much teh course is going to cost and how tough it is to complete, maybe what's entailed in it? f.y.i. I'm not talking about coach jumps, I'm talking about a course to attain coach's rating BE THE BUDDHA!
