If the tunnel is not open by my birthday (late march), then there will be no fire stick juggling at the grand opening! ~Droid -
I know it is more then likely a troll, but just in case it was a serious post, a nugget or two of information could save his life. ~Droid

First, without any proper test drops I would say chance of injury or death is as close to 100% as you could get. Second, most barns wouldn't be enough of a drop for most professionally made parachutes to work properly, let alone a home made parachute of unknown properties. If you really want to make your own parachute PLEASE get your master rigger's ticket first. That training would expose you to the information you would need to actually make a custom parachute and also expose you to the risks of what you are thinking about attempting.

The cat isn't actually half dead, it is neither alive nor dead (or both alive and dead depending on your point of view) with a certain percentage chance of actually being alive or dead at any given moment. The only way to find out if the cat is ACTUALLY alive or dead is to open the box... It has to do with collapsing the quantum wave field that comprises the system when it is outside any external observation... It makes more sense with the math that goes along with this stuff, but I won't go into that for now. Aren't you glad you asked ~Droid

Oops, I was thinking of average vertical velocity , I always get second derivatives and first derivatives confused with each other ~Droid

Only if you land at the same elevation as you took off from. ~Droid

What kind of earplugs do you use, the compressible foam roll-up plugs? I usually wear them in the plane and take them out before jumping since I find it hard to hear my audible as well. Although if you have them in under canopy, and then open your mouth it makes a really cool whooshing/hissing kinda sound ~Droid

Ummmm..... You ARE a hot chick It depends on the DZ you go to, but at my DZ other jumpers, coaches, LOs, etc will LINE UP to jump with low-timers. I have never had a problem getting on a load with other jumpers (and I am not even a chick, hot or otherwise). Enjoy it, have fun, don't let anyone else force you to go beyond what you are comfortable with. And there is NOTHING wrong with RW! ~Droid

Polarized Sunglasses and Jumprun viewing
droidicus replied to kturnau's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I find that polarized sunglasses help immensely. The great thing about them is that you can rotate your head around while looking up, and because of the nature of the light coming through the atmosphere it will get brighter and darker as you rotate your head. This really helps the clarity of the little dots, I find that when it is gray or hazy it helps to make it "brighter", and when it is clear blue or bright white it helps to make it "darker". The trick to this is that the little falling dot stays at the same brightness level, it is only the background that gets brighter and darker. I LOVE EM! But people look at me strangely when I am rotating my head around looking for them on jump run. ~Droid -
How tight should my closing loop be?
droidicus replied to guy_andrews1952's topic in Gear and Rigging
Sorry, but a balance will measure the same on the earth, the moon, or the surface of the sun (at least until it melts ). It is comparing a known mass to an unknown mass, and the local gravity doesn't matter, of course there needs to be some gravity, so it won't work in uG (micro-gravity, i.e. floating in space). These are two true balances: http://www.ohaus.com/products/glo/scripts/view/viewproduct.asp?Recno=710-T0 http://www.ohaus.com/products/glo/scripts/view/viewproduct.asp?Recno=1450-SD I love useless info . ~Droid -
Decible levels in freefall? In the aircraft?
droidicus replied to Deuce's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
If it were inside a jumpsuit and with that little foam wind-blocker thing I think it would be at least a good approximation. Holding it in your hand might not work well, but then again I wouldn't recommend that either. I might be able to convince someone at my work to loan me a small calibrated mic that I can stick inside my helmet to connect to a SPL meter, but I would have to so some leg work to get that done. -

Radio Shack has two different meters, one is an analog the other is digital, the digital one that I have has a maximum setting, so you could shove it in your jumpsuit and read the maximum SPL once on the ground. My suspicion is that the loudest part of the whole thing is at the door of the plane, you have plane noise AND wind noise at that time. Also, if your meter came with one of the foam hats to put on it you might want to use it so that you don't get additional noise from the wind interacting with the microphone. Please do let us know your results, it would be interesting to find out. -
Vegemite is condensed (boiled) yeast extract .... nasty vile stuff if you ask me!

For kinetic energy KE = ½ * m * v^2 where m = mass in grams, v = velocity in meters per second, and KE is energy in Joules. The velocity is squared, so there is twice the energy in a 100 gram object going 20 meters/second as there is in a 200 gram object going 10 meters/second. Having said that I don’t know if a hook knife or an altimeter would hurt more since I don’t know there weights or fall rates ;-)
