  1. You're quite the challenging person, aren't you. If you know me, I'm a very humble person. I never ask for anything in return for what I do for people. I have saved a lot of people from killing themselves, getting killed or beaten up and a whole lot of other things. I never once expected anything in return from anyone. I never once reminded them about the things that I did for them. I never once expected special treatment from those that I helped. I always keep it in my thoughts that if I were that person, how would I want someone to help me if I were them? Most NY'ers will walk over your body if you fall on the street. I'm the type of person that will ask that person if they're okay and call an ambulance for them and wait until the ambulance arrives for them. Not for my ego. I do it because I know that's what I would want someone to do for me or for my mom, dad, sister, brother, etc. I strongly believe that what goes around comes around. 2. That's because I was thinking about only myself. I wasn't thinking about what would happen if I just started off my new career with one little white lie. It would have been disastrous. I'm sure. I was only hard headed in the beginning because 10 other people (friends at HR and other cops) told me to look out for myself, to protect myself. Which made me believe that there was no wrong in what I was about to do. I'm merely posting my thanks and gratitude to people here that made me see the light. Do you see any wrong in me fessing up to my mistake? Is there a crime in admitting that you're wrong? Do you have a problem with me voicing this out? 3. Deep down inside I knew it wasn't the right thing to do. I was just persuaded by other people to look out for number one. I never saw the road that it would lead me to if I did start to lie about it. I realized it after a couple of hundred people made that point to me. I then realized, it's not about me having a safety net. It's about having the integrity of being a good cop. That hit the nail on the head. And I have all of you to thank for in making me realize that. It would have been a start at a very wrong path. What's the most you ever lost in a coin toss, Friendo?
  4. Yes, that is NY for you. Bloomberg is very tight with money here in NY. Which is why he cut the starting salary from 47k to 24k a year. I believe there a cap of only doing up to 8-10 hours of overtime a week. And if they find out you made more than that they really limit you to only 40hrs a week. The point I was trying to make was that I care about people's well being. Of course I would be procedural. I'm all about procedures. I just value human life. I'm sure a lot of AFP or AFF instructors can relate to this. They would risk their lives to save a student that didn't pull on altitude. I hear that. I get that tip from my cop friends too. Well, the risks I was referring to was taking a risk of just quitting my current job and going with the flow with the police academy. Man, that doesn't sound like something to look forward to. Well, I'm giving up a lot for a reason. If I can change one person or save one life, it's self-gratitude. I'm not looking to change the world but I would do my darndest to be down to earth and treat people with respect. Dude, I am so not doing it because of that. I don't look for pats on the back. I help out a lot of people in my life. Sometimes even strangers. I even feed homeless people. It's all protecting people, keeping them safe, keeping criminals off the street, and maybe even getting them to turn their lives around. Even if I only get to each of those things once. It would be highly rewarding to me. What's the most you ever lost in a coin toss, Friendo?
  5. Sorry you feel different about it but if I have something that's bothering me inside, I choose to ask people's opinion about. Therefore, I'll ask whatever I choose to ask. I know I can rely on sensible people here. If I couldn't, I wouldn't even turn to anyone here. Besides, I just thanked people for making me see the light. how is that being upset? please explain. 6. I'm not saying that you do that. I'm just saying that you're being judgemental on cops. Not all cops have a power trip. I admit, I have even been pulled over by cops and had been called "chink", I've had a gun pointed in my face, I've been handcuffed, been called racial slurs and thrown in a cell for mistaken identity. These were all done by different individuals. I have met several nice cops that would do anything for you. They would risk their lives for you. They would give you a break if you were going 10mph above the speed limit. Not all cops are bad. These type of cops were my mentors. They're happy doing their job, eventhough they get called names and what not. They're happy knowing that they could save your life and/or change your life positively. That's what I want to do. You really shouldn't brand all cops as gun wielding power tripping people. There will always be that handful that choose a different path. It's not a perfect world. 7. I never asked for pity my friend. You could do whatever you want to do. I just needed to voice out that people here helped me to realize that the path I was choosing was not an honest path. I'm thanking them. Do you have a problem with people making mistakes? Have you ever made a mistake in your life? What's the most you ever lost in a coin toss, Friendo?
  8. Is this what you think of Cops? I feel sorry for you my friend. And I'm sorry that cops pushed you around and traumatized you. Just because one or two cops did that to you does not mean that they're all like that. Maybe you should get out more often. Or maybe you shouldn't drink and drive, which would help you not getting pulled over to be pushed around. See, how that sounds if I were to think like you? 9. You're right Deuce. I'll just take my chances and just quit my job when they call me to duty. The overtime doesn't happen until after the academy. There's also a cap as to how much you can make per year. I'm not complaining. I'm doing this because I want to. And I'll be willing to suffer with the money, changing my lifestyle and what not if it means I can save lives out there, even if it costs me my own life. If I was doing it for the money, I wouldn't even go through all these hardships. So there you have it, life goes on and I'll choose the honest path. I guess I shouldn't have let other people persuade me to look out for myself. That's what life is all about, taking risks....I take risks everytime I do videography with last minute 10 ways anyway, so why not with this, right? Thank you all for making me feel guilty about not being honest. Even though I know I wouldn't be dishonest but who knows, why even plant the seed that I don't want sown, right? 10. Don't hold back on my account. I'm from NY. I'm not a softie. What's the most you ever lost in a coin toss, Friendo?
  11. Please come to NY and do that. I would love to entertain you. What's the most you ever lost in a coin toss, Friendo?
  12. I'm a human being, of course I wouldn't like it but guess what? It's not about what I like or what I don't like. If a boss wants to fire me for leaving my fly open, so be it. I wouldn't make a stink about it. I'm a minority in more ways than one. You can't argue to get your job back. A few people from HR told me, the day I leave no one would even miss me. They'll move on and it'll be business as usual. And if they ever wanted to get rid of me, they wouldn't even give me a package or 5 minute notice. I've seen this happen a few times. Which is why a few people in HR told me to protect myself and my best interest. What's the most you ever lost in a coin toss, Friendo?
  13. I understand where you're coming from. Of course I'm not going to be dishonest. How can it hurt the company if they already have two consultants here on board that do what I do and get paid the same amount that I do w/o benefits? I'll be leaving w/o pay and w/o benefits. All this is doing is ensuring that I have my job waiting for me if anything should happen during those 6 months. This does not cost the company a single cent for me to be out. Someone did that in the past when they went to the academy and when they wanted to come back, they got a flat NO! I didn't come up with this idea on my own. Friends from HR and even a few members of the police dept suggested that I do this. Both parties said that it's best that I protect myself. And I'm following their advice. I was going to just leave and not even turn back but both parties suggested that anything can happen and it's best if I look out for my best interest. There is no loss here for anyone. The company doesn't lose out on $$. They only lose out on my physical presence. We already have consultants here that can fill my shoes at no extra cost than what I'm getting paid and they get no benefits. What's the most you ever lost in a coin toss, Friendo?
  14. Negative on that. They pay consultants the same hourly rate that I get. We already have 3 consultants on site here now. All they'll do is have them work my slot. Of course lying is not a good option here. I'm in a tough situation here. Being a cop will only pay me $24,000 a year. That half of what I make now. I won't be able to make what I make now until after I put 4 years in. I will be literally starving, overworked and underpaid. Being on leave of absence is my safety net. It's a huge risk for me to be a cop. I'm losing a lot by switching careers. I'm a year away from getting my pension here at my current job. I risk losing a lot by changing careers. I wouldn't be able to say anything about it. That's because I would be on probation for two years. Whatever they say goes. If they have me shovel shit for a year while paying me $24,000 a year and then fire me when all the shit is cleaned up, I can't say a damm thing about it. I'm at their mercy. They can do whatever they want me to do and they can treat me however, they like. What's the most you ever lost in a coin toss, Friendo?
  15. Benefits aren't free. I'm letting them know that I want leave w/o benefits. What's the most you ever lost in a coin toss, Friendo?
  16. It's not a small mom and pop operation, my friend. My company made 600 million dollars this past year. It will cost them a cent if I'm out on leave. They can hire a consultant at a cheaper rate to replace me for the time being. What's the most you ever lost in a coin toss, Friendo?
  17. True but someone else that was honest about it and went to the Police Academy a few years ago, didn't get their job back when they didn't make the cut and they honest about it. It won't cost the company anything to have me out and for them to hire a consultant in my place. I'm taking an unpaid leave of absence. And if just so happens that I don't come back, they can hire someone else. Why would you think they'd be hurt by it. We're a big company and we're movers and shakers. They can hire someone to fill my position within a day. What's the most you ever lost in a coin toss, Friendo?
  18. It not as cold as it sounds. They won't pay me anything while I'm out on leave. They'll hire a consultant to fill in for me while I'm out. No one gets @ssed out. It doesn't cost them anything. Actually, they'll save money by hiring a consultant. Anyway, this thread is about giving advice about what I can present to HR. If you have any gripes about me doing this, please make another thread about it. Thanks. What's the most you ever lost in a coin toss, Friendo?
  19. Lol nice try. they'll ask for a doctor's note. And they won't go for it because I'll have benefits during this time while on leave. Which means the bill comes out of their pocket. What's the most you ever lost in a coin toss, Friendo?
  20. You just never know. What happens if I get hit by a car while I'm in the Academy? What if a loose pitbull mauls my leg? Once you're in the Academy they give you a 2 year probation period from there. If you get injured outside of work, they'll fire you. Why? It would be foolish for them to give you disability pay of 75% of your pay for the rest of your life. Too many scammers have injured themselves and claimed the 75% in the past. Therefore, it's a high liability for them. Thus, I got injured that would mean I'd be jobless and kicked out of the Academy. Which is why I think it would be a good idea to hold onto my job until I'm out of the Academy. What's the most you ever lost in a coin toss, Friendo?
  21. Yes, I've been here for 3 years now. How would I go about approaching that? What's the most you ever lost in a coin toss, Friendo?
  22. I'm starting the Police Academy in January. My job allows for a 6 month leave of absence. They also have a FMLA (family, medical, leave of absence) plan but that's only good for 12 weeks. If anyone is in Human Resources, I would appreciate if they could let me know what excuse is valid to be alloted the full 6 month leave of absence. I'd hate to use this but my Dad is currently in ICU, he's got pneumonia, diabetes, advance colon cancer and he just suffered from a stroke a few days ago that has the entire left side of his body paralyzed. I was thinking of using that as a last resort. Unfortunately, this falls under FMLA so I only get 12 weeks. Would there be any other legitimate excuse that I could use so that they grant me the full 6 month leave of absence while locking down my position. Any helpful input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. You guys are always helpful for both skydiving advice and whuffo advice. Happy Holidays! And Merry Christmas to those that celebrate Christmas. 23. Have you seen the reggae one? That one is pretty funny too. What's the most you ever lost in a coin toss, Friendo?
  24. It's a parody of the Old GI Joe safety clips from the mid 80's. At the end of every episode, they played these safety clips to educate kids on hazard issues. These were voiceovers and it just fit so well. That's why it's funny. I guess you just have to be from that era to understand. I won't be there this saturday. Gotta watch over my dad at the hospital. Take care, have fun and enjoy your X-keys invasion trip. What's the most you ever lost in a coin toss, Friendo?
