  1. The people don't actually choose who to vote against. They only choose who to vote for. I will confess that because I live in a country with a parliamentary system not only do I not even get a direct vote for the leader of the nation I also live with the fact that no prime ministers party have received a majority of votes for as long as I can remember. 34% will usually win the government and 40% is a landslide. So I'm having a hard time sympathizing with you for that weakness in your system. Even though I share your strong feelings about the result you are stuck with. But it is not the system, it is the people.
  2. It is disingenuous to argue about which side is in the majority at this point. It is close to an even split in house the senate and the presidency. But clearly the right is winning and has seized the moment. The electoral college is not to blame this time. The people are to blame.
  3. As expected. It does show that at least the senate is not completely in the control of the dotard.
  4. I propose that you enlist Elon into a plan to transport the homeless to Mars. Australia won’t take any.
  5. ‘Xactly. Now you’re starting to get it.
  6. This is what it means to be a right wing conservative today. And yesterday as well.
  7. Soon he will find enough spare change to buy Truth Social and merge it with the remains of Twitter.
  8. But it keeps on standing in the way of Christian religious domination of the schools. It has to go.
  9. The Ds versus the Rs is starting to remind me of Israelis vs Palestinians. Or at least the rhetoric is. Get a grip everyone.
  10. In the context of leadership selection only up is available at this moment. I hope.
  11. Yes really. Think about it. If Gaetz does not get the job it doesn't mean someone you or I will approve of will. It will only mean that someone just as evil but harder to tarnish will instead. The population has moved right, but not far right. In the end Bush and the neocons did far more damage to the US than Trump is going to do. The seemingly never ending war to bring "The American Way" to the muslim nations is the main reason Trump even happened. The Saudi royal family has to be very happy right now.
  12. Yes all that is absolutely true. There can be no other reason to confirm Gaetz. Which I do not think will happen in the end. But if it does it will not be the end of the USA. The bigger danger is the nomination for defense secretary which the Gaetz debacle will draw attention away from. The justice department will be weakened but in the overall justice system the bulk of the work is done at the state level. Defence is solely federal and more important.
  13. This is why Trump made the original statement that there were fine people on both sides. Of a demonstration event to support confederate worship. Those people are his voters. He cannot bring himself to condemn them. He failed to do what a POTUS is supposed to do. Therefore demonstrating his true colours once again. We all know that the man is unworthy. The only real disagreement is over how much that matters.
  14. The problem is that although Trump supporters are not all extremists all extremists are Trump supporters. So yes they are in bed together.
  15. I'm not sure how Gaetz as AG is worse than Trump as POTUS. Seriously the USA has already hit the bottom and has nowhere to go but up. You survived Jefferson Beauregard Sessions who was not only amoral but also competent and knew how to get things done. Gaetz will not be competent enough to do much damage. His core skills don't fit the task. The hyperbole is getting a little overblown now. Yes, it is horrible. No it is not a existential crisis.
  16. Cake in the mouth and stomach. Cake in the hand and more in the fridge. Why not have both? Trump and Musk et al do.
  17. It's pretty hard to see how that could happen given the decentralized state by state control of the process. I mean, beyond the Gerrymandering and discouraging people from voting that is already going on.
  18. SCOTUS is mostly conservative, but not MAGA. There is some hope of that branch curbing the worst excesses.
  19. The reality is that very little good can come from pandering to the most base instincts of the lowest common denominator. It may be popular, but it is very easy to take it too far and all indications are that is what will happen. Mass deportations are not going to happen because it is both too hard and too expensive to accomplish. But hundreds of thousands and possibly millions are going to be terrorized anyway for no good reason. It will make some people feel good. In a similar vein there will be tariffs because that's easy. Will they "work"? You know they won't bring jobs to America, but they will start a trade war. They will cause price increases and the treasury can probably use the tax revenue. I wonder how long till US citizens are required to show proof of vaccinations or be quarantined in order to enter Europe? Revolution without a cause is a phrase that comes to mind. Much ado about nothing.

  22. I would agree with you on that. The law would seem to be an ineffective knee jerk reaction. I have always considered Oz to be very much a nanny state on many issues. A quick search turns up a story in Canadian media about the first man reaching martyr status under this law. https://www.ctvnews.ca/world/self-described-nazi-becomes-first-person-jailed-in-australia-for-performing-outlawed-salute-1.7102769
