  1. Sorry, but you're not correct in saying that every canopy "will" give you a hard opening; I've known many people with many hundreds of jumps on their canopies with soft openings 100% of the time. And as to your claim that packing or trim are the only reasons a sabre2 can open poorly, I know a few jumpers who have had problem openings ever since they've had their canopies, with many people trying all the packing tricks with no success. With your 4 short years in the sport, your opinion is biased because you're obviously one of PD's lemmings.
  2. that won't be the last time that canopy knocks the crap out of you...why do you think they kept the name "sabre" in their new canopy! really, though, i've known many sabre2 jumpers to get their socks knocked off once in a while. just jump it about 9 times, give it to a friend for a jump, jump it 9 times, give it to another friend for a jump, etc., and you won't have any more hard openings on it.
  3. have another toke, brian...
  4. It's called the "big sky theory". What that means is, because it's such a "big sky", that you "probably" will never run into an airplane while skydiving. VFR pilots who operate on low visibility days operate by the same theory. Look before you leap; you'll "probably" be OK.
  5. Pretty funny. I hope like hell the machine acts just like that in November!
  6. You could make your canopy out of honeycomb composites, that should solve the distortion problem. Of course then you'd have all those hinges in order to pack. Nevermind.
  7. Hey "Tonto" don't be giving Micky Cottle any shit, you hear me?
  8. You know, I think one of the big, big flaws in the system is that manufacturers are on the "honor system" when it comes to compliance with TSO requirements. I certainly have no proof, but I do have a suspicion that some of the required tests are not fully completed, only the paperwork is. Why else would some product supposedly tested so thoroughly fail on several occasions when used well under the weight and speeds that they were supposedly tested to? I would like to see any changes in the process include non-company affiliates involved with witnessing and documenting required tests and some way to substantiate to the public that they were actually done.
  9. Wait a minute here, folks. Let's think about this. We skydive for excitement. If you haven't witnessed a CYPRES save from the ground, and all the aftermath, you haven't seen excitement! I mean, why wear an AAD if it isn't going to be used once in a while? What a waste of all that technology! I say just make sure all the BOZO's out there have one in their rig, then turn 'em on, open the door, and watch the action when they go BANG! Think of it sort of like this; why does anyone watch NASCAR? It damn sure isn't just to watch the cars go round and round!
  10. The J1 is sized for a zp 150. The J2, if I'm not mistaken, is sized for the same main but larger reserve than J1. So, since people are saying they fit a 170 into it, I suppose if you adjust the closing loop to fit, you can make it work. It probably won't be any more than a cosmetic issue (container flaps not fitting as designed, etc.) Besides that, we could all use a little more exercise, right?

If you're worried about counting pennies NOW, then take up another sport! Just joking, but really, those who get "hooked" on jumping spend every dime they've got (and then some) to feed their addiction. Just get out the plastic and enjoy...you can't take it with you.
  12. Quote Check out the Blade by HyperUSA. *** I've exchanged a couple of emails with them and a demo is on the way. Thanks.
  13. QuoteCrossfire2? *** I've kinda decided against doing business with those guys because of their reputation for making themselves scarce when it comes to anything you need from them, like your canopy when you're supposed to get it!
  14. QuoteAnd you said you were dissapointed with the Katana, what do you normally jump?...What other canopies have you jumped that you are comparing it to to have such an opinion? And what type of characteristics are you looking for in a canopy? The Katana is a "high performance" canopy and is not for everyone.*** I jumped a Stilleto 120 for a long time. It was really the only choice for performance back in its heyday. But after chopping it for the 3rd time I'm done with it. I hear too many people with hundreds and hundreds of jumps on the same canopy without malfunctions to continue on with the track record of this canopy. I've demo'd Sabre2, Pilot, Safire2 and found the openings very acceptable on all of those, but all 3 seem a little slower and mid-performance. So, what would be a perfect choice for me would be equal or better performance than the Stilleto with openings as good as some of the mid-performance canopies.
  15. I've heard the Nitro opens really nicely. Did it fly well also? Maybe I'll look into a demo. They also have a faster canopy, the Blade. Know anything about how it opens?
  16. The Katana was a 120 loaded at 1.65. I put around 12 jumps on it. I don't want to have to "sort out" packing and body position to tame a twitchy canopy's behavior. I've been doing this a long time and I don't think I have any issues with those things. I've jumped plenty of canopies that perform very well that open much better. I guess from some people's standpoint, if you are that determined to jump a particular kind of canopy then you'll make whatever concessions you have to just to make it work.
  17. I put several jumps on a Katana and was surprised at how disapointed I was. First, it opened like crap. It hunted all over the place and did a 360 half the time. It did turn nice and fast, but didn't know when to stop! I hadn't jumped a canopy with this much over-steer since the Diablo (which REALLY had a mind of its own). Landings were good, but I was really thinking that by now the "latest and greatest" would open like a dream, but it clearly doesn't. I'm still shopping...
