  1. In abstract terms, it's when one has no preference as to which party of the contract they are. That's somewhat problematic here, because the utility has to sell energy, but they could get by without buying, and the customer (usually) has to buy some energy, but could get by without selling. In this case, same price either direction is fair. The customer makes the investment and takes all of the risk on their side. They usually don't get to pick their supplier. Charging only for net usage, not net usage plus a surcharge for being a responsible human, is fair. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  2. Based on that description, the utility would be getting a free ride from the customer if the customer is not allowed to charge the utility for their overhead. Retail one way, wholesale the other is not fair. I'm not saying the current system is optimal. I'm saying it's not less fair than the alternatives I've thus far seen advocated. 3. No. Nor do they, generally. As pointed out above, they include overhead in customer rates. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  4. The power company is the customer. Why should they get to avoid paying for the overhead required to produce the power they purchase? The homeowner invested in solar power. Their home improvement investment should not have to go towards subsidizing your power needs. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  5. You're claiming that solar customers are taking energy from the grid during the day when power is expensive and they're capable of producing their own power with solar cells, but they're pumping excess power back to the grid during the cool night, when their power isn't worth as much. Call me skeptical. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  6. You're advocating the customer pay one rate if the power flows in one direction, but receive a different rate if the power flows in the opposite direction. There's nothing fair about that. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  7. You post as though the middle ground is unreasonable. For example, there's nothing unfair about solar panel installers receiving fair market value for their excess power. Just because you choose not to install panels doesn't mean they should have to subsidize your power needs. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  8. I see. So you're going with the "you shouldn't own your own home, because you'll have to pay for the maintenance yourself" position. Yeah, when home improvements are made, they must be maintained. Rarely is that reason to not make them. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  9. You do get that solar is the least risky energy source of all, right? If the sun goes out, everyone's screwed, not just the folks who have solar panels. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

  12. Right there is where you lose every last shred of credibility. You may as well be claiming that Earth is a flat disk instead of an oblate spheroid. Science isn't something in which one can believe or not; science is something one understands, or doesn't. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  13. Call me overly-cautious, but I'm not convinced that a zoo is the best forever home for a tiger that, on average, eats one person every other month. That might be taking interactive exhibits a step too far. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  14. Apparently much has improved with counseling since 1973. All I have to go off of is the questionable (to be generous) content that spews from your keyboard, which you tend to justify with your extensive counseling experience. Math tutoring available. 16. Fuck that. True story: I have a dedicated digital music player for my Grateful Dead library. A few months ago, I had to upgrade the storage capacity from 128GB to 256GB, of which I'm presently using about 200GB. Oh, and I vote. Also, I live in a location where anything other than an explicit vote for a Republican is an implicit (or explicit) vote for a Democrat. eta: I'm mid-forties, and the youngest Deadhead I know. 17. Diana Krall - Live in Paris Vince Benedetti Meets Diana Krall - Heartdrops Pink Floyd - Meddle, Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here Willie Nelson - Red-headed Stranger, Live 1978 Eric Clapton - 24 Nights Ray Charles - The Genius After Hours Janis Joplin - Pearl Bob Marley & The Wailers - Live at the Roxy, Babylon By Bus Miles Davis - Kind of Blue Stevie Ray Vaughan - Live Alive Norah Jones - Live at Heineken Hall, Amsterdam Wynton Marsalis (w/ Eric Clapton, w/ Willie Nelson) - Play the Blues (w/ EC), Here We Go Again, Two Men with the Blues (w/ WN) BB King - Live … at the Regal, … in Cook County Jail, … at The Apollo Grateful Dead - 1972-05-26, Lyceum Theatre, London; 1977-05-08 Barton Hall, Cornell Univ. For me, 5-6 hours sounds like just enough time to listen to a couple Dead shows. I listed two great shows from prime eras, the 1972 show being the last show with Pigpen on vocals, and Cornell, considered by many Deadheads to be the grail show. I have 175+ shows in my library (mostly 1966-1980), so I'll play a random show from whatever era I want to hear; they varied a lot across the years, and even one night to the next on many tours. I did include a bit of country, Willie, because he and his band are phenomenally talented, and the Grateful Dead, because they play a lot more than just country. Neither is Nashville-style country. Willie defined Outlaw Country, while Jerry Garcia could be described as California country. The former is what you get when a country-boy embraces hippy, while the latter was a hippy who embraced country and bluegrass. Two of the best guitar pickers ever. Math tutoring available. 18. So you know as well as the left that Kavanaugh was lying. Or are you still in denial on that point? Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  19. It's far better to pass on a qualified nominee than to confirm a poor one. It shouln't be about what's best or most fair to Kavanaugh. If there is reasonable doubt regarding his character or integrity, the SCOTUS deserves the nominee be rejected. Of course, it's been a LONG time since Republicans have done anything that was in the countries best interests, so it's no surprise they'll continue their destructive rampage and approve the attempted rapist. 20. As a matter of idle curiosity, who, in your opinion, should enlist/join the military? No one under age 21, but that's a topic for a different thread. To be clear, it's not that he went into the military that makes it a disappointing decision. It's that he allowed himself to be talked out of going to university first. It will leave him playing catch up when he realizes most opportunities that will keep him interested long-term aren't going to be available without a degree, particularly the jobs that pay like he thinks he'll be paid when he gets out. University isn't for everyone, but it's a pretty good, and safe, bet for highly-motivated kids with top-decile intelligence. It's certainly not a risky choice for such kids, like his parents led him to believe. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  21. I did no such thing. Had you read what I wrote, you'd know that I've only said positive things about my nephew. Disappointment in a choice is not equivalent to disappointment in a person. As for whether or not he knows I think it was a poor choice, given his options? It doesn't matter. He's smart; he'll figure it out on his own sooner or later whether I tell him or not. 22. I think you'll find, if you take the time to read posts before replying to them, that you are the one who completely missed the point. Why do you try to engage if you won't bother trying to read? Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  23. You think a "businessman" who never saw the concept of TVM is normal??? I read an MBA textbook a couple years ago, and the whole thing was based on TVM. The lowest-level class I've taken in which TVM played a large role was one of the two lower-level undergrad accounting classes I had to take. I think it was introduced in Managerial Accounting, but it might have been Intro To …. The first time I saw TVM was Theory of Interest, taught by Stephen Kellison, who was a long-time president of the Society Of Actuaries. My point is that TVM is common, credible, important, and not just the stuff of grad-level classes. It doesn't bias the article; its inclusion makes articles like this more accurate. 24. When did that trend start? It's clear in hindsight that the biggest gains from Trump's tax cuts were shareholders. Workers mostly got one-time bonuses instead of permanent wage increases. Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!
  25. He shot a grizzly bear above him, on the ridge atop a rocky slope. I'm not sure it's reasonable that he should have been surprised by the behavior of massive objects under the influence of gravity. If he's going to be stupid, he'd better be tough.
