    ABP dead?

Nobody can. Have you seen what kind of personalities are attracted to BASE? At any rate, we should commend the ABP on coming as far as they have. Only if it was called the Alliance of BASE Jumpers, which it isn't. Given that there was no prior movement in the backcountry niche, I feel they had a right to call themselves the alliance of backcountry parachutists. The second they did that though, the right turned into a plight. Now that they have alienated part of the backcountry group, they better make sure they accomplish their goals, or prepare for a waterfall of critisism.

    ABP dead?

How is that? Also; Europe is facing the same battles as the US is. It's more legal now, but that's because of the hard work that people have put into it, not because of this imaginary different mindset that in reality doesn't exist.
  3. Neah, I'll just stick to Canada.
  4. I see, I thought it was a USPA guideline, not an FAA regulation. Do the same rules apply for visiting jumpers with rigs from other countries? I believe European and Russian jumpers can take non-TSO'd rigs to the States and jump them, right? Can this provide a loophole?
  5. Well, strictly speaking it would be secondary, and since the word reserve implies backup, it's really the primary reserve. But anal retentiveness aside, I jump my full BASE gear out of the plane while wearing what is commonly referred to as a tertiary parachute or a belly-mounted reserve. Did I mention I jump at a great dropzone? Admittedly, I would much rather not wear the belly-mount at all, but there's laws to comply with.

    ABP dead?

    That sounds familiar.
  7. Don't worry about it Thijs. There was a time when people had to make twenty mandatory jumps on round parachutes before they would be allowed on squares. Nowadays, everybody jumps squares. Regardless of whether that is a good idea or not, sports change and the people coming into them change. With the changing image of skydiving, and the media coverage of BASE jumps from tall cliffs in beatiful scenery we will only see more people that start skydiving with a sole interest to become a BASE jumper. In fact, I think that Tom Aiello started skydiving solely to get into BASE, and I think he turned out to be a moderately competent BASE jumper, haha. Welcome to the world of flight. Enjoy all its aspects while you can. Have many safe jumps and remember that patience rarely kills.
  8. Depending on how ballsy you are, you could probably freepack (use the tailpocket, remove the D-bag) a 220. It will be spilling over on all sides and you might want to stick to hop-and-pops. I don't think this is a good idea though. Buy a properly loaded BASE canopy (a 260 in your case) and use that. Then make a deal with your dropzone about renting a big student container and reserve. That's what I did, and they only charge me 7 US dollars rental per jump. The added benefit is that I now have two rigs which makes doing more jumps in a day easier. If you dropzone is non-USPA, get a base container and install chest loops so you can attach a belly mount reserve. This way you can jump your actual BASE packjob and see how your heading performance is.

    ABP dead?

Here's the official ABP statement for members:

    ABP dead?

There is no old or new ABP, there is a single ABP. Only the structure in charge of it has changed. You are still a member.

    ABP dead?

But certainly I would hope that communicating with members is part of the organizations mission. I find it disappointing that I have to find out about this state of affairs through an unofficial post on these forums. Robin reads these forums, so I urge him to come forward with a statement. It would be the very least he could do to those members that have financially helped him. My reason for supporting the ABP was because it was backed up by people whom I respect a lot (Jason, Tom, Jimmy, Martin, Adam, Todd, etcetera). With them gone, my support is dwindling. This may be clear to the board members, but it is not clear to any of the other other members. I suspect it has something to do with the recent ideas about a Yosemite protest jump, but I would like to hear Robin's version.

    ABP dead?

Furthermore, most of us were aware of this before we decided to support the ABP. There is no need to bring this up in hindsight.

    ABP dead?

I would strongly urge any discussion regarding this matter to be resolved away from the boards until proper statements can be made. The last thing the ABP or the BASE community needs is speculation. For the record, I know nothing about this matter. I suspect that should there be some truth to the above, the ABP board members will be responsible enough to come forward with a public statement and resolve it in the BASE community's best interest. I hope...
  14. I posted a few photos of this trip here: http://www.jaapsuter.com/hike/. It shows the Mariposa pack (albeit not very well), the promising exit-point, and a bunch of other shots of the hike/scramble/climb.
  15. Any chance we'll see this clip on Skydivingmovies.com? I doubt ESPN will sue us over a five minute clip, if they even were to find out in the first place.
  16. And don't forget that in case of rigor mortis, a microwave oven might just warm 'm up enough to make it feel like the real thing. Referring to a conversation that took place in a Twin Falls Emergency Room several months ago.
  17. You can order it online through Paragear or other major online skydive stores. Alternatively, you could use a bag of white flour. Some people have gotten good results with it. Do a search for "smoke" on all forums and you'll find lots of useful info, like for example this thread. Edited to add that if you don't find the answer you're looking for, it might be worth trying to post on the Gear and Rigging forum.
  18. Granted, if you go headlow during the first three seconds of your exit, being a freefly headdown pro is not going to help you much, whereas being a platform diver might do you some good. Nevertheless, any sort of exercise that makes your body more familiar with being relative in all three dimensions and randomly oriented around all three axis is not going to hurt your BASE jumping. Focus on canopy skills, but if you have some freefall time to play with, you might as well vary your time in the air beyond tracking jumps.
  19. Both of those are great for developing spatial, relative and body awareness. Not to mention, they are a lot of fun too. Give them a try, you might just find out how much fun skydiving can be.
  20. Hey! That's your second warning. Don't make me give out another one. The Dutch are not nearly as lazy as the Danes.
  21. I read your posts three times, but I still don't understand what two systems I am referring to. I'm describing something differently than what I'm envisioning?
  22. Hi, I'm looking to get in touch with people that might have info on the two major big wall areas in western Canada, not the famous area north of Quebec. If you know anybody that knows about or has been to these places, please get in touch with me. If you have no idea what areas I am talking about but are curious, please PM. Thanks, Jaap Suter
  23. Why not use a tailgate on a small-hole mesh slider, or masking tape? As far as I know Vertigo is the only manufacturer that still recommends the slidergate and even that may have changed now that they have merged with Basic Research. My Rockdragon slider has a slidergate loop on it, but I've never used it, opting to use masking tape instead. I also recommend getting in touch with Adam Filippino if you haven't already.
