I received the book from Amazon.com yesterday, and finished it the same night. It's a page turner! I can highly recommend it to anybody interested in Base. What I really love about the book is that it manages to capture the most important thing of all. After all the preparation, the education or lack of it, the packing, the climbing, the jumping, the landing, the traveling, potential b*llshit and all adventure; it's all about one and one thing only: 'having a good time with friends'. I also really liked the prose by the way. It reminded me a lot of the book "Surely you're joking, Mr. Feynman" which is about completely different things, but has the same anecdotal style to it. Cheers, Jaap Suter

I ordered from Amazon.com a week ago, and it shipped four days later. Haven't received it yet, but am not expecting any problems. Cheers, Jaap Suter

Got what I need. Thanks people!

Weird, that button doesn't show up in IE for me, but I can see it fine in Firefox. Looking at the page source-code though, I could find the email address. Thanks guys! Jaap

Yeah, but it doesn't seem to have any email addresses. I also found http://www.swissfreefall.tk, which does have some contact information. Thanks! Jaap Suter

Hey, looking to get in touch with jumpers from Switzerland, specifically people living in Zurich. Please PM. Thanks, Jaap Suter

LOL, I'm guessing that you're just referring to my website. I'd be surprised if there was a fellow dutchman who would skydive as well as know geometric algebra

Hey Rob, what can I expect from a deal like this? You have my curiousity. I've always expressed interest in learning more about my gear, but perhaps if I back it up by some money, we can setup something more structured. Waddayasay? PM or reply here. Cheers, Jaap

As far as 'major' goes, I suppose that would be Salt Lake City. But I can highly recommend just flying straight into Twin Falls itself. It's only a 20 or 30 minute flight from Salt Lake. Edited to add: and often you'll get it for the same price as just flying to Salt Lake City. Cheers, Jaap Suter

Second that! Once you put it on your foot though, there's no turning back. It stays on until it grows off your skin, and into your socks :). That stuff saved me on many hiking trips in Switzerland. Cheers, Jaap Suter

No kidding! Way to go Bill! Keep it up, and by the time I have my gear together, you'll be able to teach me a 3rd FJC :). Cheers, Jaap Suter

Hi, This topic has been covered in a few previous threads: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=839189;search_string=insurance;#839189 http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?do=post_view_flat;post=646496;page=2;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;mh=25; but the information therein is somewhat vague. I'm wondering about two things in particular: 1. Does your medical insurance cover illegal jumps? If it does, does it make a distinction between a felony and a misdemeanor? If not, do you just jump and if you bust yourself up you hope you'll be able to pretend it happened during a non-illegal activity? Have you considered all cases where you bust yourself up and aren't covered? Medical bills can add up real quickly. 2. Do you have insurance to get legal help in case you need a lawyer for one reason or another? Are you aware of any limitations that come with such an insurance (hypothetically, could any criminal benefit from such an insurance?). Thanks, Jaap Suter

Hey Rob, I can't say for the Crispis, but if you want you can try on my Hanwags next time I'm out in Pitt. I have size US 11 so they should fit you. Of course, you won't see me until the snow is gone from the runway :). Are Debbie and Ian back from holidays already? Cheers, Jaap Suter

I believe it's http://www.crispi.it/. Cheers, Jaap

Not really an answer to your question, but I own a pair of Hanwag fly boots and I've been very happy with them. I landed them in the water at the Perrine bridge and they were completely soaked. After they dried, they looked like new again. Since then, I've taken them on several pretty heavy snowshoeing trips where they got hammered on pretty rough and they still work perfectly. Finally, I use them in skydiving whenever the landing-area is soaking wet (we get large and deep puddles of water when it rains), and my feet are always dry. Cheers, Jaap

Out of curiosity, why would you still need a liability policy when you let your students write a letter explaining what they are getting themselves into? Is the U.S. justice system really such that a family has a chance of winning a case against you, even with such a letter available? My knowledge of the U.S. justice system is restricted to the horror stories about obese people sueing McDonalds, so correct me if I'm wrong. Where I come from (the Netherlands), Darwinism still makes a strong case in court. Cheers, Jaap Suter

Tailgate use on slider up. . . .always use it?
JaapSuter replied to Bigwallmaster's topic in Archive
Hi Tom, just double checking here. First you say: Followed by: But wouldn't you agree that a slider-up jump is rarely in low airspeed? Just curious. Is masking-tape the tape that breaks really easily? I haven't seen this technique yet I believe. Do you put the sticky side inside or outside? Thanks, Jaap -
No, not quite. In fact, I already knew how to do it. It was just that I managed to screw up one riser three times in a row, each time resulting in walking up to the canopy and finding a big wad of fabric turned inside out. Quite embarrassing. I'll blame it on it being dark and being tired after a full day of jumping ;).
-
Please do. I'm not jumping yet, but I've learned how to hook a canopy to a rig now ;).

Hey, everybody is probably more interested in Vampire info right now, but oh well... I tried searching for some Phoenix posts with flight experiences, but couldn't find much. Please link if you can find something. I received my Phoenix pants and jacket last Friday. Took it for 4 jumps today, all solo tracking dives. Only had a timer on my fourth jump (around my ankle, as somebody suggested) and got 71 seconds from 13k to 3k. Maximum speed was 94mph and slowest in freefall was 86mph I think (can't remember exactly). I don't believe that's very good, but I'll have to practice more. It definitely took me a while to find the sweet spot and stop being wobbly. The third jump was the first one where I was in a consistent forward motion. Still I wasn't going too much faster than in a normal jumpsuit track though. The fourth jump felt the longest and the most stable, but I have many jumps ahead of me before I can really use the pants' potential. A couple of questions: 1. How much space between the legs? 2. Shoulders turned inward? 3. How much space between the arms and hips? 4. Do you bend/de-arch at the hips? 5. Where do you look? Down or forward? 6. Toes extended, or pointing sideways? 7. Jacket tucked into your pants, or over it? 8. Crotch low and baggy, or crotch high? Thanks, Jaap Suter
